Taxi operators in the Ethekwini Metro in KwaZulu Natal have vowed to remain on strike until more than three hundred of their impounded vehicles have been released by the municipality. Thousands of commuters in and around Durban were left stranded. Taxi operators say municipal officials are targeting and impounding their vehicles, although an agreement was reached with the city in May that permit enforcement would be relaxed. Metered cab operators have also joined the strike, citing victimisation by the city's law enforcement officials. Mbuso Mkhize reports..

With reports emerging of a potential civil war in Burkina Faso following a coup last week, the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon has reiterated his call for the country's security forces to show restraint. Military units of the armed forces are marching on the capital Ouagadougou to disarm an elite presidential guard responsible for last Thursday coup. While regional mediators are expected to meet for an extraordinary summit of ECOWAS in Nigeria tomorrow, the United Nations is calling for a swift resumption of the country's transitional process. Various teacher unions have expressed that that they do not want the Annual National Assessments (ANA) to take place this year. The unions say ANA is flawed and needs to be revised. However Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is adamant that national assessments for grade 1 to 9 learners in public schools will continue this year. The ANC says it's still committed to media freedom. However, Minister of Small Business Development and ANC head of Communication - Lindiwe Zulu - raised concerns about lack of transformation in the media and unfair reporting on the ANC. She was participating in a discussion on media transformation hosted by the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal at the Durban City Hall last night. The ANC has released its policy documents ahead of the National General Council in October. One of the documents is titled: The Battle For Ideas, Media Transformation and Diversity, and Accelerating Future. Meanwhile, other participants in the discussion were Premier Senzo Mchnu, City Press Editor Mondli Makhanya and Advocate Robin Sewlal of the Journalism School at the Durban University of Technology. The ANC is calling for a review of the number of provinces. This would see fewer but larger provinces. The Chairperson of the ANC sub-committee on Legislature and Governance, Nomaindia Mfeketo, was quoted as saying the re-configuration of provinces has nothing to do with reclaiming the Western Cape. It is to make sure that the country's resources are shared equally across the provinces.

Robotic surgery has dramatically improved the treatment of prostate cancer since its introduction in South Africa two years ago. Dr Lance Coetzee, from The Urology Hospital in Pretoria, says the hospital has completed almost 400 successful robotic prostatectomies. These hold a host of significant benefits for men such as reduced risk of complications and a quicker recovery time.

The embattled Oudtshoorn Municipality in the Little Karoo has once again seen a change in power...barely two months after the DA's take-over in July...and weeks after the municipality was placed under administration. The council was thrown into chaos last Friday after councillors of the NPP and a DA councillor sided with the ANC - giving them a majority. Motions of no-confidence were passed...and a new mayor, deputy mayor and speaker were elected. Following the shake up...former Mayor Gordon April is now once again Mayor. The NPP's John Stoffels who in July sided with the DA, has returned to supporting the ANC and retains his position as Deputy Mayor.
