Sleeping on roadsides in rainy weather has been one of the worst experiences of their lives. That's according to more than a hundred residents - including women, children and the elderly and frail - who have been evicted from housing units at Howell Road at Sydenham - west of Durban. This follows a long-standing dispute with a company managing low cost housing units on behalf of the eThekwini Metro. The residents claim the houses were meant to be RDP government-subsidised houses, but the municipality and First Metro Housing Company are now demanding rent from them. Residents claim some of them, including an 88 year old woman, the disabled and children - have been hospitalised after spending cold nights on the streets. Nhlanhla Nxele reports.

The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) has reprimanded its former President Angie Motshekga for allegedly "organising various events around the country under the banner of the ANCWL". 23 Aug 2017 - More South Africans are slumping back into poverty as previous gains are being reversed since 2011. Reasons include “anaemic” economic growth, stubbornly high unemployment and educational outcomes failures, according to Statistics South Africa’s “Poverty trends in South Africa: An examination of absolute poverty between 2006 and 2015” released on Tuesday. For policy-makers and government this diagnostic report raises deeply worrying questions about the continued pursuit of policies that fail to bring about change. For one in seven South Africans (13.4%) this meant extreme food poverty, or survival on R441 or less per person per month in 2015. Effectively, this is a return to the poverty levels of 2007. Afro-pop musician Vusi Nova's manager has confirmed that the artist has been found after being kidnapped during a hijacking outside his home in Melville, north of Johannesburg in the early hours of this morning. The musician whose real name is Vusi Nongxo was kidnapped together with another artist after performing a gig in Soweto. The other artist has also been found and is at the Brixton police station. The United Democratic Movement has threatened to pullout of the coalition government in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro if its councillor and ousted Deputy Mayor, Mongameli Bobani, is not reinstated by Monday next week. Bobani was booted out as the Deputy Mayor through a vote of no confidence in yesterday's council meeting. The UDM has accused the DA of forming a 'side-marriage' with the Patriotic Alliance while COPE and the ACDP, have seemingly gone against their national leadership by also supporting the motion.
