National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete has filed an affidavit supporting the South African Reserve Bank's court application to set aside Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's recent report and remedial actions. Parliament says Mbete has also asked the High Court in Johannesburg to allow her and Justice and Correctional Services portfolio committee chairman Mathole Motshekga to act as applicants in the case. In her report released last month, Mkhwebane ordered as a remedial action that the mandate of the SARB be changed from targeting inflation to promoting economic growth.

The Black First Land First (BLF) has threatened to continue with protest action should the media continue with what the organisation terms "racist reporting". BLF has also criticised the South African National Editors' Forum (SANEF) for grand standing and issued a warning that no one will take away their right to protest. This follows a court victory by SANEF stopping BLF from harassing journalists.

Stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, may be compromised following the announcement of a possible further election delay. The DRC's electoral commission says it is not possible to organize presidential elections by the end of this year. This is contrary to a political agreement which was made on the 31st of December last year with opposition parties, committing to hold elections within 2017. Elections in the country have been halted since Joseph Kabila's term in office ended in mid-December last year.

The United Nations has refused to comment on the specifics of the International Criminal Court ruling against South Africa but has rather reaffirmed the Court as a centerpiece of international justice. The Court on Thursday ruled that Pretoria failed to comply with the ICC's request for arrest and surrender of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and thus prevented the Court from exercising its functions and powers. That was the judgment handed down by the Court's pre-trial chamber after Pretoria failed to arrest President Al-Bashir when he visited Johannesburg during an African Union Heads of State Summit in 2015. The Court also rejected South Africa's arguments that al-Bashir enjoyed immunity while in the country as a visiting head of state. The High Court in Johannesburg will today afternoon rule on the South African National Editors' Forum's application for an interdict against the Black First Land First party. Sanef wants the court to order the BLF to stop intimidating journalists. BUT Black First Land First leader, Andile Mngxitama has denied that recent protest action against journalists amounted to harassment, intimidation or threat. Angela Bolowana reports
