Zambian President Edgar Lungu has announced that he will engage with opposition parties with the aim of reducing political tension in that country. Lungu made the announcement in Lusaka after a meeting with the Catholic Bishops of Southern Africa. Lungu has long been criticised for silencing political opponents since the detention of opposition leader, Hichilema Hakainde on treason charges.

The South African Police Emergency employees intend to cripple the 10111 call centres countrywide as they embark on strike this morning after what they term as 'negative responses' to their demands for increased salaries. Genereal Secretary of the South African Policing Union, Oscar Skommere says salary levels of SAPS Call Centre workers are not on the same level as other government call centres, despite the 10111 service being the busiest emergency call centre. Workers downed tools a month ago over the same issue.

The North West Department of Health has contracted two private ambulance companies to help with emergency medical services. The companies only transport patients from one health facility to another, they say, in order to free up government ambulances for home calls. The ANC top six officials will head back to the Western Cape for a two day meeting next week, to discuss the challenges confronting the Provincial Executive Committee. This was the only decision made at a meeting in Cape Town where the top six and National Working Committee met with the PEC about its problems. The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has come out strongly condemning death threats against former SASSA CEO Thokozani Magwaza. This follows media reports that Magwaza has been threatened out of his job which he consequently resigned from. In a statement, OUTA says it hopes the authorities will not appoint a compliant stooge who will just agree with Minister Bathabile Dlamini's original intention to have the social grants distributed at huge cost.
