Today marks World Press Freedom day and the United Nations has called on global leaders to defend media freedom. 3 May was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991. The day seeks to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom as well as to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession. The National Prosecuting Authority has changed the charge against Elvis Ramosebudi from conspiracy to commit murder to incitement to commit murder. Ramosebud was arrested by the Hawks for allegedly plotting to kill 19 people, including cabinet officials. His case was yesterday postponed to Friday for further investigation. More criminal charges are expected to be added in the case involving two men accused of killing a 16-year-old boy in Coligny in the North West. Pieter Doorenwaard and Phillip Schutte, were applying for bail yesterday (tuesday 2 May),and the matter was postponed to today. Despite the murder charges they are facing, fresh charges including kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and intimidation of state witnesses are expected to be added this morning. The leading investigating officer in the case, spent the whole day, explaining chilling details on how the two accused allegedly killed the deceased. Lucas Mothibedi reports

Police Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has warned that police will be harsh on criminals. He was speaking while visitIng Nyanga Junction on the Cape Flats where a security guard and robbers were shot during a hostage situation on the May Day public holiday. The security guard has since died in hospital. Mbalula has praised police and security staff for their efforts to diffuse the situation. Chris Mabuya reports

ANC Provincial Chairperson Ace Magashule has labelled chaotic scenes in the Free State, where President Jacob Zuma was heckled and booed as embarrassing. Zuma was expected to deliver a keynote address at Cosatu's National May Day celebrations in Bloemfontein. This forced Cosatu to cancel the rest of the programme. Mbali Sibanyoni reports

Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali used the federation's May Day celebrations in Gauteng to boost Cyril Ramaphosa's campaign to lead the ANC. He called on the federation's membership to start lobbying for deputy president Ramaphosa to lead the ANC and the country. A bail application of two men accused of killing a sixteen year old Coligny boy, will be heard this morning at the Coligny Magistrate Court in the North West. The matter was initially set of the 9th of this month, after the presiding magistrate in the case recused himself, citing fears for his safety. Yesterday {01/05}, the North West High Court granted an urgent application to bring forward to today the previous date. This is after the accused filed an urgent application, saying their continued incarceration without bail, is unconstitutional. Police have shot and injure a suspect hiding inside the Nyanga Junction Shopping Centre near Manenberg last night following the release of the last 10 hostages. Police say they went back to search the centre after the hostages were freed yesterday. They also found two weapons used in a robbery at the Shoprite store. A security guard was fighting for his life last night after he was shot during a hostage drama. Ten hostages were freed after a nearly 12 hour ordeal when an attempted armed robbery quickly escalated into a hostage situation. Police experts, including Task Force members and hostage negotiators, were on the scene. Chris Mabuya reports

The SACP says if it were in COSATU's position, it is not likely to have invited President Jacob Zuma to address the main May Day rally. Some COSATU affiliates say the labour federation's decision to invited Zuma to address the rally in Bloemfontein is not consistent with its call for him to step down. Several other rallies will take place across the country. Trade union NUMSA and the newly-formed labour federation SAFTU will observe Workers' Day in Durban. COSATU's tradition as a tripartite alliance member is that the ANC president should speak at the May Day event. We caught up with SACP spokesperson Alex Mashilo for more details...
