The portfolio committee on trade and industry has heard that government should cancel the debt of consumers who have been victims of reckless and exploiting lending practices. The committee has been engaging interest groups that made representations about measures to provide debt relief to indebted consumers. Earlier this year the National Credit Regulator briefed parliament about the state of South Africa's credit market, revealing that millions of South Africans were over-indebted. The committee proposed that the regulator consider a kind of "debt forgiveness programme", which would reprieve lower income groups. Wits university students have condemned what they called rape culture at the institution. This after a student was raped at Wits Junction residence three weeks ago. The students say it is because of this culture that the suspect was allowed to remain in the same residence without regard for the complainant's well-being. The media was barred from a meeting last night at Wits University's Junction Residence, at which students engaged with management. Communications Workers Union has called for President Jacob Zuma to step down with immediate effect. The Cosatu-affiliated union says this is linked to the observations made by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's State of Capture report that the Gupta family - which is closely tied to President Zuma - may have had a role to play in appointing senior government officials.
