The first HIV vaccination trials to prevent the spread of the virus have kicked off at the Chris Hani Baragwaneth Academic Hospital in Soweto. This study called the HVTN 702 involves over five thousand participants in 15 sites across the country. The Head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate - IPID - Robert McBride, says he is relieved that the charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice levelled against him have been withdrawn. McBride, together with his two co-accused Mathews Sesoko and Innocent Khuba, was facing the charges in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. The two investigators have since been fired from IPID as a result.The State cited as a basis for their withdrawal of the charges, the State witnesses reluctance to deliver evidence in court. The charges against the three related to their investigation of former Hawks boss, Anwa Dramat's alleged illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals in 2010.
