Here's Episode 22 of Season 2. Leading change is an essential part of successful police leadership, something I cover in my digital toolkit and police promotion masterclass. Here I discuss various change models you'll find helpful if aspiring to the ranks of Sergeant, Inspector, and Chief Inspector. Understanding how you are leading change also happens to be great for building evidence against the CVF when it comes to interview boards and applications. Ultimately, this work makes you a better leader, and therefore of course a better candidate for promotion! I hope you find it useful food for thought. For Episode 21 of Season 2, I reflect on the recent Baroness Casey review interim findings around professional standards and conduct. It all comes back to values, the Code of Ethics, and your leadership of others. Connecting with values in this way will improve your police leadership perspectives and ultimately make you a better candidate for promotion! I hope you find it useful food for thought. Welcome to Episode 19 of Season 2, where delve into the subject of leading performance and how it can feel like the Spanish Inquisition! I was inspired to record this podcast, having attended a talk on police performance given by Humberside DCC Paul Anderson, at the Emergency Services Show yesterday, 21/09/22. It was entitled, 'A Victim-Focused Approach to Performance'.
My reflections in this (longer!) episode include: the Humberside 'Compstat' style approach; the expectations of performance management at each rank (Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector); what a one team approach looks like; the links to the CVF (We Deliver, Support and Inspire, and We Take Ownership); debrief on the presentation and Humberside's journey from bad to good performance; PEEL inspections; how brutal interrogation aids accountability; differences between strategic and tactical performance management; among other things like my own personal experience having worked in the top corridors of Devon and Cornwall Police.
Whether you're aspiring to the next rank or seeking to solidify your competence as a leader, I hope you find this useful leadership CPD.

In my last episode, I interviewed ex-ARV-Sgt Harry Tangye and author of 'Cornish Scoop'. I'm excited to share another great scoop with you in Episode 18 of Season 2, where I had the privilege of interviewing ACC Una Jennings, an inspiring senior leader in Cheshire Police.
Una kindly spared some time from her schedule to talk with me about various police promotion and leadership topics. It's a jam-packed half-hour! We discuss the importance of values, her experience of coaching and mentoring others, being a role model herself for women in policing, career development, and she shares plenty of insightful gems along the way. I hope you find it as inspiring as I did!
I was so inspired coming away from this interview, I decided to also compile a blog of inspiring police leadership, including a section on Una's powerful TEDx Talk in 2019. It's called 'Inspiring Police Leadership and Interview with ACC Una Jennings' and you'll find it in the usual place (policepromotion.blog).
Also, here's a couple of links discussed in the interview. First is the New Zealand Police recruitment video. The second is a link direct to her TEDx Talk...

In Episode 14 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger', I discuss PDR season. PDRs are a controversial topic for police officers, largely owing to how police forces enforce them. But don't let those gripes distract you from their core importance to your leadership and development. This will also soon feature as part of a written blog, so keep an eye out on policepromotion.blog for more info on this subject.

Here's Episode 15 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger'. I've been busy with several things this Summer, so am sharing with you the audio from two videos I provided on YouTube in 2020, all about what I call the postcode lottery of promotion. I also share techniques on how you can win! Below is a link to my blog on the same subject with visuals and infographics...

In Episode 13 of Season 2, 'Year of the Tiger', I revisit the role of Sergeant, hot on the heels of my previous episode dedicated to the role of Inspector. In fact, this is an audio (and video if you're watching on Spotify!) version of a recent, in-depth YouTube video I published. I say revisit, because you can also listen to me discuss the role of Sergeant in a different way in my 2021 podcast, S1E4.
So what do you actually know about the role of Sergeant? Understanding the role you are aiming for is essential preparation for aspiring promotion candidates. I discuss various aspects of the role functions and dimensions, decision making, supervision, leadership, and much more. I also cover several example interview questions you may face. This is all to get you familiar now before you are in the hot seat or compiling your evidence when the opportunity comes along!
