The post Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 21 September 2008 appeared first on Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating 78 RPM Records.
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.
On this evening’s show we’re going to fulfill a couple of requests and have several vocabulary lesson.
Enjoy the show!
Here’s the complete playlist:
Segment 1: Tubicinate
My good friend, expert & well prepared outdoorsman Bill Mendoza, died recently due to freak weather while kayaking on Mono Lake. As another friend said the other day, it’s just not fair. Even so, when this show’s over, if you’re not familiar with Mono Lake, I know Bill would join me in hoping you’ll point your browser to www.monolake.org to find out about this unique and amazing place along the eastern Sierra Nevada in California. Bill was a kind, gentle and selfless human being as evidenced by his more than 30 years as an extremely dedicated junior high school special education teacher, and his financial and lifestyle support of numerous humanitarian and conservation causes. But, in addition to his passion for his family and friends, for Mono Lake, and for education, Bill Mendoza also tubicinated.
Tubicinate is a verb meaning to blow a trumpet. Bill Mendoza tubicinated in the local community’s Ontario Chaffey Show Band just about every Monday evening for nearly a quarter century. So here for my friend Bill Mendoza, are some rapidly rotating records about trumpets.
Two Trumpet Toot – Harry Roy
One Note Trumpet Player – Joe Haymes
The OKEH Laughing Record (The Trumpet Lesson) – [Probably: Otto Rathke, cornet & male laughing / Lucie Bernardo, female laugh]
Segment 3: Zez Confrey
This request comes from musician and RRR listener Hannu in Finland, who is recovering from some surgery on his Achille’s tendon. So, with best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery, we’re going to have a couple of segments with Hannu’s requests.
Charleston Chuckles – Zez Confrey AHO
Coaxin’ The Piano – Zez Confrey, Piano Solo
All Muddled Up – Zez Confrey AHO
Segment 4: Febrific
The next word in this evening’s vocabulary lesson is febrific. It comes from the latin febris for fever and means producing fever, feverish or having a fever.
Swing Fever – Frankie and Johnny Orchestra
High Fever – Coon-Sanders Orchestra
Charleston Fever – O’Bryant’s Original Washboard Band
Spring Fever – Rube Bloom (Piano)
Segment 5: Lachrymiform
The last word in our vocabulary lesson this evening is lachrymiform, an adjective meaning tear-shaped, or having the form of a tear. Yes – it’s a segment with tears.
Tears – King Olivers Jazz Band
Through My Tears – Ralph Bennett Orchestra / Elmer Feldkamp, v.
Dancing With Tears In My Eyes – Ruth Etting
Segment 5: Frank Banta
Hannu’s other request was for Frank Banta.
My Sugar – Frank Banta
I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me – Johnny Marvin (Andy Sanella, g. – Frank Banta, p)
Charleston Capers – George H. Green, xylophone / Frank Banta, piano

The post Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 3 August 2008 appeared first on Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating 78 RPM Records.
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.
On this evening’s show we’ll celebrate the birthdays of Edwin J. McEnelly and Don Voorhees, fulfill a request, and play “eight” songs.
Actually we’ll play more than eight songs, but we’ll have two segments of songs having to do with the number “eight”, because this is our eighth anniversary show. Rapidly Rotating Records debuted on KISL on July 23, 2000, and we’ve been here ever since.
Enjoy the show!
Here’s the complete playlist:
Segment 1: Bands of Eight
The first several anniversary shows were easy to program: there are lots of songs with one, two three or four in the title. There aren’t quite so many having to do with “eight”, so here’s bands with eight in their name.
Savoy Shout – Luis Russell and His Burning Eight
Astoria Strut – Jones and Collins Astoria Hot Eight
Come On, Baby – The Rhythmic Eight
Pretty Audrey – Louis Dumaine’s Jazzola Eight
Segment 2: Eight
Continuing this special eighth anniversary edition of Rapidly Rotating Records.
Cheatin’ On Me – Varsity Eight
This Little Piggy Went To Market (from “Eight Girls In A Boat” – Coslow & Harold Lewis) – Annette Hanshaw
A Day Without You (from “Eight Girls In A Boat”) – Ed Loyd AHO / Vocal Trio
Dinner at Eight – Ray Noble AHO / Al Bowlly, v
Segment 3: Edwin J. McEnelly
July 21 marked the birth in 1879 in Spencer, Massachusetts, of one of my favorite bandleaders, Edward James McEnelly, better known as Edwin J. McEnelly.
Sleep, Baby, Sleep – Edwin J. McEnelly’s Orchestra / Elliott Shaw, v.
In The Middle Of The Night – Edwin J. McEnelly’s Orchestra
Just Cross The River From Queens – Edwin J. McEnelly’s Orchestra / Frederick L. Wade, v.
Segment 4: Don Voorhees
July 26 marked the birth in 1903 in Allentown, Pennsylvania of bandleader, composer and conductor Don Voorhees.
That’s My Hap-Hap-Happiness – Don Voorhees AHO
Oh, Doris, Where Do You Live? – Don Voorhees AHO / Arthur Fields, v.
Clementine – Don Voorhees AHO / Irving Kaufman, v.
Segment 5: Different Collections
As much as I’d wish it, not every record you hear on this program is the actual original 78 from my very own collection. Happily, for the final segment of this eighth anniversary edition of Rapidly Rotating Records I have a record courtesy of my friend Edgar Bullington, who many of you know as the curator of Bathwater Music.
Stars – Bar Harbor Society Orch (as The Harmonians) / Frank Bessinger, v.
Me and Jane In A Plane – Debroy Somers Band
Hot Aire – Perry’s Hot Dogs

This past Wednesday evening, I had the great pleasure of attending the final screening of this years “Last Remaining Seats” film series, sponsored by the Los Angeles Conservancy. This screening took place at the beautifully restored Orpheum Theater, and featured three silent films with Robert Israel accompanying them on the Orpheum’s mighty Wurlitzer. See if you can figure out from the following records what the films were.

It’s heard the first Monday of each month at midnight on KPFK FM 90.7 in Los Angeles. It can also be heard streaming online at KPFK.org.
Jersey Walk – Ethel Waters
Smile – Ethel Waters
Guess Who’s In Town – Ethel Waters
