  • Does The Big HP Remove ALL Character Defects?

Does The Big HP Remove ALL Character Defects?

Steps Six and Seven bring us face to face with a difficult question: when we become ready and ask God to remove our defects of character, does that mean every defect simply disappears?

Today we’re talking about what the Big Book actually says about character defects, humility, willingness, continued growth, and the difference between asking God for help and expecting instant spiritual perfection.

Maybe the point is not that every defect vanishes overnight. Maybe the point is that we stop protecting them, stop excusing them, and become willing to let God change the way we live.

  • Without Humility, No Alcoholic Can Stay Sober at All

Without Humility, No Alcoholic Can Stay Sober at All

Step Seven in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions says that humility is not just a nice spiritual idea—it is necessary to survival. It tells us plainly that without some degree of humility, no alcoholic can stay sober at all.

Today we’re talking about what humility really means in recovery. Not humiliation. Not thinking less of ourselves. But becoming teachable, letting go of self-reliance, being able to admit when we are wrong, and becoming willing to seek God’s will instead of constantly trying to run everything ourselves.

The 12 & 12 says Step Seven represents a change in attitude that allows us to move out of ourselves and toward God. Maybe humility is not about becoming smaller. Maybe it is about finally becoming free enough to stop making everything about us.

  • But What About The Real Alcoholic

The Big Book uses the phrase “real alcoholic” for a reason. It is not about how much somebody drank, what they lost, whether they had a job, or whether they ever went to jail. It is about what happens once alcohol enters the picture and whether that person can reliably control what happens next.

Today we’re talking about identification, the difference between consequences and alcoholism, and why comparing ourselves to somebody else’s story can keep us from recognizing our own condition.

Recovery begins when we stop asking, “Am I as bad as that person?” and start asking, “What happens when I drink?”

  • Mysterious Paradoxes

    Mysterious Paradoxes

On page 46 of Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, Bill W. talks about one of the great paradoxes of AA: out of complete defeat and weakness can come strength, and losing our old way of life can become the beginning of a new one.

Recovery is full of things that seem backwards at first. We surrender and find strength. We admit powerlessness and begin to recover. We give away what was freely given to us and somehow keep it. We face what we were running from and discover freedom on the other side.

Today we’re talking about those mysterious paradoxes—things that may not make sense logically at first, but begin to make sense when we actually live them.

  • The True Sign of Intelligence Is Not Knowledge but Imagination

The True Sign of Intelligence Is Not Knowledge but Imagination

Knowledge tells us what we already know. Imagination allows us to look beyond what is in front of us and ask, “What else is possible?”

Today we’re talking about the difference between simply collecting information and actually using our minds to create, solve problems, see things differently, and imagine a better way forward. Experience and knowledge matter—but sometimes the answer comes from being able to see something that does not exist yet.

Whether it is recovery, relationships, our communities, or our own lives, change often begins when somebody is willing to imagine that things could be different.

  • Practice These Principles

    Practice These Principles

The Steps are not meant to stay on a page. Recovery is about taking what we learn and actually using it in our relationships, our decisions, our reactions, and the way we treat other people.

Today we’re talking about what it means to practice these principles in all our affairs—not just in meetings, not just when things are going well, and not just when it is convenient.

Honesty, humility, service, love, open-mindedness, responsibility, and faith only become meaningful when they show up in the way we live.

  • Sometimes the Day You Planned Is Not the Day You Are Supposed to Have

Sometimes the Day You Planned Is Not the Day You Are Supposed to Have

We can wake up with a plan for the day and be completely convinced we know how things are going to go. Then the phone rings, a plan changes, somebody needs us, a door closes, or an opportunity shows up that we never expected.

Today we’re talking about staying open-minded when life moves in a different direction than we planned. Not every detour is a setback. Sometimes the change itself is where the lesson, the opportunity, or the usefulness is.

Maybe the goal is not to control the whole day. Maybe it is to stay present enough to recognize what is actually being put in front of us.

  • Do We Care When It Doesn’t Affect Us?

Do We Care When It Doesn’t Affect Us?

It is easy to care about a problem once it reaches our family, our neighborhood, or our own life. But what about when the suffering belongs to somebody else?

Today we’re talking about addiction, overdose, homelessness, mental health, poverty, and the larger question underneath all of it: do we care because something is wrong, or only when it gets close enough to affect us personally?

Recovery teaches us to get outside of ourselves. Maybe one of the real tests of that is whether somebody else’s suffering matters before it becomes our own.

  • The Danger of the Plateau

    The Danger of the Plateau

Early recovery often comes with urgency. Life is uncomfortable, consequences are fresh, and we know something has to change. But what happens years later when life is stable, things are going well, and recovery starts to feel routine?

Today we’ll talk about complacency, the danger of coasting, and what it takes to keep growing when crisis is no longer pushing us forward. The Big Book reminds us that our reprieve is based on the maintenance of our spiritual condition—and that means recovery still needs attention even when life is good.

The challenge is not just getting sober. It is continuing to live a life of recovery when the emergency is long gone.

  • Rarely Have We Seen A Person Fail

Rarely Have We Seen A Person Fail

The opening of How It Works gives one of the strongest statements in the Big Book: “Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path.”

Today we’ll talk about what that really means—not as a guarantee that recovery will always be easy, but as a statement about what can happen when we stop trying to invent our own version of the program and begin honestly following the path laid out in the Steps.

The emphasis is not on being special, being strong enough, or having all the answers. It is on becoming honest, taking action, and continuing to follow the path even when it is uncomfortable.
