  • NEW: Read to Lead University Book Club
    First, let me thank you for being such a loyal listener and fan of the Read to Lead Podcast. It means more to me than you know. Really!
    You may recall that at about this time last year, I was in the midst of planning a spring launch of something called Read to Lead University.
    Well, for reasons I won’t detail here, RTLU was indefinitely shelved in 2016. At one point I wasn’t sure if it would ever see the light of day.

    But now, I can confidently share that in two weeks, all that changes.
    I’m reaching out to you today to ask if you’d like to be one of just 50 Charter Members of the all new Read to Lead University Book Club.
    Before you answer, let me share just some of what you’ll get with your Read to Lead University Book Club membership:

    * At the beginning of each month (starting in two weeks), I’ll personally select a business/non-fiction book that you, as a member, and I will read together that month. Books chosen will center mostly around the areas of Leadership, Personal Growth, Productivity, and Career.

    * Near the end of each month, I’ll host a members-only online video chat where you and I, along with other members, will talk through the book we’ve been reading, share our ideas, discuss ways others are applying the book’s concepts, share success stories, any hurdles, and more.

    * About once per quarter (roughly 4 times per year), this members-only online video chat will include a visit from the author themselves! How cool is that? Personal coaching from your favorite authors!

    * Can’t attend a chat live? No worries. A library of all past video book chats will always be available for as long as you’re a member.

    * During the month, you’ll also receive either a PDF, audio recording, or both, related to the book we’re reading (things such favorite quotes, key takeaways, things you should consider implementing, etc.)

    * There’ll be a group forum enabling you to discuss the book (or any book really) with your fellow members throughout the month, not just during the video chat.

    * Plus, I’ll include occasional reading tools, tips and other book-related resources to help you on your learning and implementation journey.

    * And much more!

    Here’s the deal…
    I’m looking for 50 charter members, people who want to have a hand in helping shape this into something pretty special. Is that you?
    In exchange for your initial feedback, you’ll get access at the lowest price ever offered, AND have a say in the long term direction of the Book Club.
    BUT WAIT!
    I want to make this a risk-free, no-brainer decision for you.
    Because you expressed an interest all those months ago, I’m offering you your first month for just $1 (and just $20/mo thereafter).
    But only to the first 50 people who sign up! I wonder how many have signed up while you are reading this?
    Though there’s no content there now, that will change over the next two weeks as I announce our first three books (February through April) and begin preparations.
    And, no matter what the cost of joining the Book Club is in the future (it will increase over time), your membership will never increase for as long as you’re an active member.

  • Episode #155: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity
    Today’s guest is a favorite among her students. She’s a Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School where she teaches on the Future of Work and directs an executive program on Human Resource Strategy.
    She was also named best teacher at London Business School in 2015. I’m talking about Lynda Gratton, co-author of the book The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity.

    Many of us have been raised on the traditional notion of a three-stage approach to our working lives: education, followed by work and then retirement. But this well-established pathway is already  beginning to collapse according to Lynda and co-author Andrew Scott.
    Whether you are 18, 45 or 60, you’ll need to do things very differently from previous generations and learn to structure your life in completely new ways.
    The good news for you and me is Lynda and The 100-Year Life are here to help.

    In today’s episode, Lynda and I discuss:

    * What statistics today say about average life expectancies and what that means for you
    * Examples of workable alternatives to the traditional three-stage life that make a long life a gift rather than a curse
    * Some of the ways this new reality impacts families, marriages and children
    * …and much more!

    See that pic over there on the right? That’s me three months after receiving my first shirt from State & Liberty. Not bad, eh?
    I was mortified when I tried it on the first time. You see, my stomach was a bit larger than my chest. Seeing the shirt on me in that condition, however, motivated me to get serious about my fitness. Now, it looks great!

  • Episode #151: 3 Ways to Be a Leader Others Can’t Help But Follow
    I’ve worked for my share of bad bosses. Truth is, I used to be one of them.
    Hard as it is to admit, my idea of leadership was once predicated on the idea that, as the leader, there was no one smarter on the team than me. Therefore, it stood to reason, the organization was best served by those under me simply doing everything I instructed. As long as that were the case, all would be well with the world.

    As a listener to this show, you know nothing could be further from the truth.
    The best leaders understand how to leverage the collective brain power on their team. They actually encourage team members to, in addition to trying new things, to try new ways of doing old things.
    It’s okay to be wrong. Right? As long as you take what you’ve learned and use it to your advantage next time.

    To be a leader others will want to follow, you must:

    * Exhibit trust
    * Get your hands dirty
    * Share the blame (when appropriate), not just the credit

    How to Be a Leader Others Can’t Help But Follow
    Prior to my transition to self-employment in 2013, I spent 26 years as a broadcaster.
    During that time, I had the privilege of working with a number of wise and experienced leaders; none of them more so than a man named Matt Austin.
    As much as Matt was a great example to me of what leadership should look like, he served as equally great an example of the kind of man I hoped to one day be; firm, fair, compassionate, kind, trusting and smart. I wanted nothing more than to please him. Coming from Matt, the words “well done” were like music to your ears.
    After working alongside him for 14 years, the last 8 as his second in command, here’s what I’ve learned about what it takes to be the kind of leader others will follow anywhere.
    1- Trust Those You Lead to Do What You Hired Them To Do
    Among the many things I appreciated about Matt, was his unwavering faith and trust in his team to do our jobs. His stance was simply to trust until there was a reason not to. This level of trust motivated us to want to honor it as best we could. It also made us feel safe in seeking his advice and help if and when struggles arose.
    Were there the occasional bad eggs that took advantage? Sure. But they were often easily and quickly identified. As a result, they weren’t around long enough to do any real damage.
    2- Don’t Ask of Your Team What You Aren’t Willing to Do ...
