Ready for College? – One Reason Students are Screwing up in College

Listen Later

What sparked today’s program was a comment from one of our listeners, who heard a college freshmen bragging about not needing to spend any more than an hour a night studying. His friend added with certainty: “Everybody knows that college doesn’t really get hard until junior and senior year.” She was in high school. That’s the kind of thinking that spawns the numbers below.

  • Only 1 in 3 college students graduates on-time
  • 40% still haven’t graduated after 6 years
  • 25% of freshmen drop out or don’t return
  • Yet these students got terrific grades in high school — based on roughly 6 hours of study each week. Therefore, freshmen enter college unrealistically confident, expecting more of the same. How confident? Research says 71% believe they rank in the top 10% of their college class or above average in their ability.

For the first time in their lives, these students will get low grades on college tests. The first few times, they will think it’s a fluke. But the flukes will just keep on coming. After a few semesters, the students complain that they don’t know “what’s wrong” and find excuses for not doing well. I didn’t know that was going to be on the test.

College takes work, just like training to be an athlete or musician. “School” grows progressively harder. Pre-teens and teens that train to be a better student will handle college work. They’ll know how to play in the Big Game. Our College Smart books tell students how to be among 35% who graduate on time. What they learn will help them in the even bigger game after college.
