The Birth of a Nation is a 2016 American period drama film based on the story of Nat Turner, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831. The film is co-written, co-produced and directed by Nate Parker (in his directorial debut) and stars Parker as Turner, with Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union in supporting roles. Parker also petitioned financiers to invest in the film, ultimately getting a $10 million production budget and started filming in May 2015 in Georgia.
The film premiered in competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2016. Fox Searchlight Pictures bought worldwide rights to the film in a $17.5 million deal, the largest deal at the film festival to date. At the end of the festival, it won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and was highly praised for its directing, acting, soundtrack and cinematography. The film was released in the United States on October 7, 2016 by Fox Searchlight Pictures.

  • Exclusive Interview With Libertarian Candidate Kent McMillen for US Senate
    WHY KENT?
Kent McMillen is the father of two adult children, Justin and Nikia, lives in Melrose Park, and has worked over 30 years in the legal field.
Kent enjoys listening to the stories of people's lives, a valuable skill growing up in a family of eight children on the southeast side of Chicago.
He grew up politically active. Kent recalls helping his dad canvas their precinct and watching his oldest brothers take his dad's World War II gas masks for protection during the 1968 Democratic convention.
Kent's activism over the past 20 years has been with the Libertarian Party, because he believes in the value of every person and how everyone should be free to pursue their own happiness. That freedom to innovate creates new technologies and industries, raising everyone's standard of living.
He takes positive action to protect his own health and personal finances and believes the same approach is badly needed in Washington. Our country is drowning in debt and weighed down by heavy regulations, high taxes, and the cost of policing the world.
If you want our economy to grow, allow people to live and let live, and bring our troops home, support Kent McMillen for US Senate.

  • Is Donald Trump Smart For Not Paying Taxes?: Call in 516-387-1815
Despite what Donald Trump says, we really can learn a lot from his tax returns — even from the partial ones made public by The New York Times.
The major takeaway from the three pages of Trump’s 1995 returns that the Times made public is that Trump is right when he says the system is rigged. What he doesn’t say is that it’s rigged in his favor and in the favor of people like him — and against regular people, those of us who earn money, pay income tax on it, and financially support the country in which we live.
To keep things relatively simple, I’m telling you what I see in Trump’s returns, based on my decades of experience parsing financial filings. I will try not to get bogged down in numbers and technicalities.
