A few hours ago my wife asked me if we could just leave the country for good. It wasn't a rhetorical question, but a serious, sobering, painful one coming from a distraught black mother of five young black children. Her question was not one of travel, but survival.

 

She already knew that being black in America is not safe, but the videos of Alton Sterling being killed by police in Baton Rouge and of his devastated son crying his heart out on national television hit her hard. They hit millions of us hard. His name and those videos are now seared into the widely known roll call of black men and women murdered by American police in cold blood.

 

While millions of us grieved and processed our anger and pain about the death of Alton Sterling, something unthinkable happened right before our eyes - live on Facebook for all of us to see. Riding in the car with his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter, Philando Castile was pulled over by police in Minnesota Wednesday night. As he reached for his wallet, as the officer requested, the officer shot him four times and killed him.

Having just witnessed her boyfriend shot to bits in front of her young daughter, Diamond Reynolds had few choices. She couldn't call the police, of course, they were there, with their guns now pointed at her. So she pulled her phone out, opened up Facebook and chose to broadcast live, for the whole world to see as Philando fought for his life, bleeding out right there in the car.

So you would not be far off no matter which Sampson/Samson comes to mind. Even though those comparisons are not entirely complete. Because Sampson, the comedian, is distinctly unique: a thinking, funny, passionate comic- who bridges culture, race, age and community with fresh humor, straddling an understanding and a perspective of the world that both an African American straight mom and a young white DL bisexual teenage boy, or someone out, just for a night of fun and laughter all could equally relate to, while trying to recover from non-stop laughs and serious reflection.

Chicago natives Terrance ‘TtGotIt’ Wilson and Pierre ‘Prince Charming’ Phipps met and became best friends in high school, then went on to pursue degrees at Southern Illinois University. In 2010, after discovering a mutual love for hip-hop, they began posting videos of them free-styling over some of the hottest rap singles. “Girlz Be Gagging”, their interpretation of Nicki Minaj’s “Roman’s Revenge”, is a provocative, raunchy track filled with tales of sex and debauchery. While indie gay rap has been around for years, their music began to circulate over YouTube with over 2.1 million views. They have appeared on major radio stations such as The Breakfast Club (New York City) and WGCI (Chicago), magazine articles, and performed across the United States. Critics condemn them for portraying gay black men as being promiscuous and overly sexual. The Freaky Boiz don’t seem to mind, because they embrace the controversy and continue to make provocative music. They’ve continued to produce great music and has launched their first mix tape, “Unleashed”, December 25 of 2012.
