  • The Best Supportive Statements - How to Be Supportive

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: How to be Supportive

This week we are going to speak about how you can be a really great support person for someone else in your life. This could also help you identify whether or not you are getting the support you want from others in your life supporting you.

Join me in going over these tips on how to be the best supportive person!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • So I thought it would be super helpful to anyone that wants to get better at being supportive with their words, to share some really great statements to say to someone you want to support.
    • I am going to give you a good list of encouraging, empathetic & supportive things you can say to someone in need of support that can (but not all) apply to most situations.
    • I will also give a brief explanation of why I think each phrase is really great to say to someone. And I want you to know many of these statements come from the Gottman Institute.
    • “I wish you didn’t have to go through this.”
    • “I wish I could of been with you in that moment.”
    • “I support your decision here.”
    • “You are making total sense.”
    • “I see. Let me make sure I understood what you shared. What you’re saying is…”
    • “You are in a lot of pain here. I can feel it.”
    • “Wow. I don’t know what to say.”
    • “Thank you for trusting me with this. That means a lot.”
    • “What has this been like for you?”
    • “What do you need right now?”

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!

  • Supportive vs. Enabling - How to be Supportive

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • I think it is very important to distinguish the difference between being supportive & enabling someone.
    • Being supportive is a great, helpful thing & enabling someone is not helpful in the slightest & really only leads to trouble for both sides.
    • Let’s start with what it means to be an enabler. Enabling someone can look a lot like love. You want to be kind & caring & not shatter that person’s world. But you also need to be real with yourself & realize you might also be enabling because you fear rejection & hurting that person’s feelings.
    • By allowing someone to continue in damaging behaviors or aiding in those behaviors and activities, you create more damage.
    • Enabling can also be seen as not allowing someone to deal with negative emotions & consequences, which can eventually lead someone to believe their behavior is acceptable.
    • Some examples of enabling: Allowing someone you know say they are sick when you know they are hungover & have a problem with alcohol. Allowing a child to skip school because they didn’t get their work completed. Giving money to someone that is struggling with gambling or buying things they need to not be purchasing.
    • Maybe you don’t realize you are enabling someone. Here are some questions to ask yourself to see if you are: Do you find yourself making excuses for the other person? Do you often put your own needs second to someone else? Are you constantly telling yourself whatever the behavior is that it isn’t a big deal? Do you find yourself trying to take responsibility for their actions?
    • Now let’s talk about being supportive. Being supportive can look like someone that is available to listen when needed, give advice when asked, be there to support specific, individual decisions, give general love & comfort & be trustworthy & safe to be around.
    • And as I mentioned yesterday, being supportive also means learning to balance between being helpful & positive, but also honest & realistic with your comfort & advice.
    • And you will know that you are overstepping your bounds when you try to force your advice on someone, try to take control of the situation or start making assumptions about the situation or problem & becoming judgemental.
    • Being supportive with an edge of honesty is the best place to be, but will need some practice if you are aren’t familiar with giving honest yet kind advice/opinions while being helpful.

  • What It Means to be Supportive - How to be Supportive

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Being supportive is one of the best things you can do for someone else. It will also help you learn how to move through hard emotions.
    • Let’s talk about what it generally means to be supportive & later in the week we will talk about how to be supportive in different ways.
    • The basic idea of being supportive is helping & assisting someone else. It can also be someone that provides emotional support & encouragement.
    • One of the biggest traits about someone that is supportive is their ability to accept people as they are & makes those around them feel safe & comfortable.
    • The general characteristics of supportive people tend to be: integrity, caring & congeniality.
    • But one important piece of being supportive is the need for also being realistic.
    • It’s necessary to realize that you can’t always be the yes man to someone. You need to be supportive & helpful, but also honest & down to earth with your perspectives & truths.
    • There is nothing helpful about encouraging someone to continue on the path they are on, even if it’s painful & destructive or pushing them to make a decision that will reap regret & trouble in the future.
    • You need to be mindful of what you’re supporting & if it isn’t in line with what you know they want or what would be the best decision to make, you have to have the confidence to speak up & give them guidance, in addition, to support.
    • And lastly, it’s important to know that your support of others can be depending on what the relationship is. Being supportive of your close friend will be different from supporting your spouse than supporting your sibling. You might be able to be even more candid with those you are closer to & might need to keep a little more space with others.

  • Handling Anger - Top 10 Mental Health Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Top 10 Mental Health Tips

This week we are going to speak about my favorite tips for overcoming regular, everyday struggles we all deal with at some point that is related to our mental health.

Join me in going over my favorite top 10 tips for getting through some of the biggest life struggles.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Number 1, Think Before You Speak. This is something I have been trying to remind myself before I say anything, really, but especially when I am upset & angry.
    • Number 2, Take A Time Out. If you truly feel like you cannot keep any negative words to yourself, take a moment away to yourself to calm down.
    • Number 3, Make Sure You’re Using Statements that Identify Your Feelings, Not Theirs. Using ‘I” statements are important when you are sharing how you are feeling & how whatever happened has affected you.
    • Number 4, Don’t Pretend You Aren’t Angry. Hiding your anger is not going to help the situation or make anything better. Just deal with it as soon as you can, move through your feelings & move forward.
    • Number 5, Try to Learn Your Warning Signs. If you are able to identify when you are about to get angry, it will be a lot easier to get yourself calm or figure out what’s wrong & move past it sooner. Warning signs that you’re about to be angry could be: Pounding Heart, Sweating, Clenched Hands, Raised Voice or Being Snappy.
    • Number 6, Channel the Energy Into A Workout. A lot of times getting into some sort of workout will help you release or even mentally work through your anger.
    • Number 7, Do Something You Immensely Enjoy. Another way to take your mind away from the initial burst of energy & craziness you may feel when you are just beginning to feel your anger is to do something you really enjoy. Whether that be a hobby you love, taking your dog for a walk, those adult coloring books or dancing. Just choose something you know you always have a great time doing and change your mindset for a bit to gain a different perspective on what you are feeling.
    • Number 8, Confrontation Can Work, Too. If your anger is towards someone that has wronged you, I think it would be fine to speak with them about it, but you must do it calmly. If you are able to have a conversation without raising your voice, saying ugly or accusing words, then talk to the person about how you feel & figure out what needs to happen to move forward.
    • Number 9, Talk With Someone You Trust About Why You’re Angry. Sometimes speaking with someone, whether it be a friend, & partner or a counselor can help you put everything out on the table & figure what you’re truly feeling, if it’s deeper than the surface anger you are experiencing, & figure out a solution from there.
    • Number 10, Don’t Hold Grudges. Don’t allow yourself to be taken hostage by your own bitterness developed from allowing the negative feelings to crowd out any positive ones. Choose to forgive & move on. Not forgiving is like drinking poison & expecting the offender to get sick & die. But instead it will always be you, because you’re the one choosing to hold onto the offense & pain.

  • Putting Fitness First - Top 10 Mental Health Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Number 1, Decide Your Ideal Workout Time. This is the thing that helped me the most. By not leaving the opportunity to workout to chance, I had a higher chance of actually going to the gym. And I’m not saying that you have to choose one time & go with that forever, but do what will work best for your life.
    • Number 2, Start Where You Are. A lot of times it can be really tempting to just jump into doing as many reps as possible or trying to go 7 days a week, 1 hour per day. But you have to be real with yourself & start where you can start.
    • Number 3, Choose Some Goals. It’s best to go into a fitness journey with some actual goals & ideals you want to accomplish, but again be reasonable. Don’t just tell yourself in a month you want to bench press half your body weight. Choose realistic goals for yourself & if you are unsure of what an attainable goal would be for yourself, ask someone that is experienced or familiar with fitness to help.
    • Number 4, Remember that it is supposed to be fun. Yes, it will be hard in the beginning, but it should also be enjoyable, as well. Make sure you choose the exercise style that will allow you to enjoy your workout time.
    • Number 5, Consider Your Diet. I do not know anything about dieting, but I do know that you should be trying to choose more veggies, fruits & proteins than anything else. And I am for sure not telling you to avoid everything at all. Just to find your healthy balance.
    • Number 6, Understand There Will Be Setbacks. You can’t win everything all the time, so understand that there will be setbacks, you will regress, but a lot of times after regression comes significant progression. Just don’t let yourself give up. It’s not worth it to give up after all that time spent & energy committed.
    • Number 7, Give Yourself Rewards. Every time you hit a milestone, give yourself a reward. It could just be shouting out in excitement that you hit the goal, or maybe you run a race & reward yourself with a massage, or you finally hit a squat goal & decide to treat yourself to a new gym bag or lifting gloves.
    • Number 8, Create A Vision Board. I love the idea of creating a vision board in regards to fitness, but you could also just add your fitness things to your general vision board, too. You can keep it old school & cut out pics to add of exercises you want to become stronger at, how many reps you want to hit, or maybe you are saving up for to buy a specific piece of fitness equipment.
    • Number 9, It’s Not About Looking Like Someone Else. It’s just not. It’s about achieving the greatest version of yourself, not someone you saw on Instagram or in a magazine.
    • Number 10, Add It Into Everyday Life.

  • Coping with Stress Tips - Top 10 Mental Health Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • Today I am going to give you some tips on how to cope with stress in the moment & overtime.
    • Number 1, Try to Prepare in Advance. Whether this is laying out the things you need in advance or creating a plan ahead of time, anything to eliminate decision fatigue or confusion in the moment will cut back on stress for yourself & the situation (if applicable).
    • Number 2, Create Boundaries. Personal boundaries are lifesavers & just saying ‘no’ more often when you don’t want to do something or aren’t able to is super helpful.
    • Number 3, Work On Time Management Skills. If you find a lot of stress stemming from getting behind on things or being late, work on creating a calendar system or todo list that works best for you. Even setting your clocks could help if you are chronically late.
    • Number 4, Journal. Writing out your feelings can be very helpful. And taking time to reflect back on how you were feeling & seeing if there are any similarities or trends in how you were feeling can help pinpoint what is driving the issue.
    • Number 5, Exercise. Whatever type of movement you are into, do it to get that release of endorphins & experience relaxation & a bonus, being productive.
    • Number 6, Break Down Tasks/Projects to Prevent Feeling Overwhelmed.
    • Number 7, Identify Your Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms. When you are stressed, what do you find yourself doing to deal with it that really isn’t working but you tell yourself it is in the moment? Habits like sleeping all the time, over-eating, pulling away from social activities, excessive drinking, or taking your feelings out on others isn’t the way to deal with your stress. Identify what your negative coping mechanisms are & replace those with healthier & more hopeful habits.
    • Number 8, Shift Your Mindset. If you are struggling with Perfectionism, being a People Please or anything related, you have to work on shifting your mindset to more positive ideals & train of thoughts. You have to allow yourself to make mistakes, care about yourself first & be more realistic with yourself & expectations of yourself & others around you.
    • Number 9, Talk to Someone.
    • Number 10, Pet an Animal or Take a Shower. Cuddle & pet your animal, if you have one. If you do not, take a shower to reset your mind. Both activities will give you something else to think about.

  • Anxiety Attack Tips - Top 10 Mental Health Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Today I am going to give you some tips on how to get through anxiety attacks. It doesn’t matter what level of attack you go through, you can use these tips.
    • Number 1, Take A Time-Out. This is especially important if your anxiety is being caused by a social situation. Give yourself even just a 5 minute break to talk yourself down & become rational enough to deal with your current situation. Tell yourself that you have recovered from it before & this time is no different.
    • Number 2, Take Deep Breaths. During your time-out, conduct some breathing exercises. Make sure these are deep & slow breaths that will assist in calming you down.
    • Number 3, Manage Your Triggers. If you’re able, figure out what triggered your anxiety & try to separate yourself from it. Sometimes just removing yourself from the problem will help resolve your anxiety quicker.
    • Number 4, Exercise for an Endorphin Release. Even light exercise can help release endorphins, which helps to change your mood & relax your body.
    • Number 5, Practice Grounding. This is an exercise that helps your mind come back to what is real & not made up in your mind. Identify 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell & 1 thing you can taste.
    • Number 6, Do Something You Enjoy. I know that this isn’t always an option, but if it is, do it. Many things are possible these days with the technology we hold in our phones. So if it’s reading a book, watching a show, exercising, drawing/coloring, or anything else you can come up with, try to do it to take your mind off of what is bringing in the anxiety.
    • Number 7, Remember that Your Mind Lies to You. Sometimes it’s all so overwhelming, but just try to remember that your mind could be playing tricks on you & trying to convince you of something that isn’t true & that could hurt you more than you think.
    • Number 8, Speak to a Counselor or Someone Else You Trust.
    • Number 9, Relax Your Body. Notice if your muscles are getting tense & if so, take the time to loosen up, stretch & relax all the tension you have built up from experiencing the anxiety.
    • Number 10, Speak Positive Affirmations to Yourself.

  • Mental Balance Tips - Top 10 Mental Health Tips

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Number 1, Exercise Regularly.  Exercise can help improve mood, sleep, anxiety & stress. Reducing the negative impact of these things on your everyday life will improve your ability to have a clear & focused mind. Problems related to these often lead to brain fog & issues focusing.
    • Number 2, Discover Your Productive Hour. Try to figure out if there is a time of day that works best for you to get things done. It could be more than an hour if just general morning time works best for you. But try to pinpoint that time of day & maximize it as much as possible. Usually, this is the time where your mental clarity & ability to keep things in balance works the best.
    • Number 3, Ask for Help. This is one I have spoken about recently. You need to ask for help when you need it. You have to allow others to provide their time & talents to assist you, especially when they really want to. It will only hurt you more in the end if you do not.
    • Number 4, Mediation. This is not something I really practice, but I have been told it is really helpful with coming back to who you are internally & a baseline to restart from. You are able to reconnect with who you are, what you want & how you truly want to go about things. It also allows for the mind to feel calm momentarily, which helps break up any instances of stress.
    • Number 5, Journal for Reflection. I talk about doing reflections often. You don’t necessarily have to journal to do it, but it helps when trying to recall how you are feeling & what happened when you felt the way you did. Sometimes recall of that type of stuff is really hard.
    • Number 6, Learn to Accept Negative Feelings. Accept that you will sometimes have negative feelings & that the best way to overcome those is to confront those, not runaway. Figure out what is causing the feelings, whether it’s direct outside feedback or developed from a separate experience. Then you will be able to figure why those are present & move on from it sooner.
    • Number 7, Practice Forgiveness. Holding onto hurts, pains & transgressions will not do anything to the offender & only be worse for you in the end. Forgive them & move forward with your life. Don’t let those experiences hold you back from enjoying your life & living your best.
    • Number 8, Create Healthier Habits. This could be eating healthier, having a strict sleeping schedule, getting health concerns checked up on, having some personal quiet time, limiting screens, and/or including grounding in your routine.
    • Number 9, Get Counseling.
    • Number 10, Learn to Focus on the Present. Worrying about the past will not change the past. Worrying about the future will not make it come quicker or turn out the way you want it to.

  • How to Practice Minimalism for Good Mental Health - Minimalism & the Mind

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Minimalism & the Mind

This week we are going to speak about how minimalism can positively affect your mindset & make it easier to enjoy your life & the truly important parts.

Join me in learning more about minimalism & how it relates to your daily mindset.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Today I want to leave you with a quick list of ways you can practice minimalism that will contribute to you having better mental health overall.
    • The first one I want to start with is learning to say ‘no’ to things you don’t want to do and/or don’t have the capacity to do. By minimizing the things you commit to, you will have less to worry about in letting people down, being disappointed or uncomfortable yourself.
    • Boundaries are one of the most important things for anyone to hold onto & embrace no matter what you are going through.
    • Make sure you have savings for an emergency. Part of minimalism is getting rid of things you don’t need, which is one of the hardest things for people because some will feel like you need to hold onto things just those “just in case” fears. But having an emergency fund should dampen some of those fears & give you a sense of being prepared if you do need to purchase something.
    • Take the time to deeply think over purchases. I am not saying you should go so far as to the analysis by paralysis edge, but to take your time when contemplating buying things, especially more expensive items or things you aren’t sure about.
    • Ask yourself if you are going to be using it on the regular, what value will it bring to your life, will it simplify anything for you & can you actually afford to purchase it & if necessary, maintain it?
    • Examine your relationship with things you have chosen to keep. Ask yourself if you are holding onto things because of some sentimental value, but still not using those items? One of the best ways to preserve memories for physical items you don’t actually need it to take photos of it & create a photo book to reflect back on when you feel the need to.
    • Make good use of your time. Becoming minimalist can also help you cut out things in your schedule that are not priorities. This will end up saving you time & energy to invest back into something else that really matters to you & has value.
    • Lastly, minimalism will help you live the life you want to live, not the one you think you need to live.
    • By taking the time to eliminate activities, responsibilities or anything else from your schedule because it doesn’t share your values or align with your goals, you will have the opportunity to focus on creating your desired life & be more intentional about how you live it. The more you give up physically & mentally, you will feel less guilt about trying to keep up with others or just fit in & be what is considered normal.
    • You are getting the opportunity to live your life with purpose & no longer just do things because you think it is what is expected of you.

  • Slowing Down to Create Mental Peace - Minimalism & the Mind

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • I wanted to talk about mental peace because part of the amazing thing about minimalism is that with less comes more, and more peace is part of that.
    • Decluttering your life of physical things will do the same for your mind. Having less will also help with limiting overstimulation because there is less to be distracted by.
    • Introducing minimalism into your life can really assist in increasing peace of mind because the less things you have in your life will reduce worry & increase organization, which contributes to peace of mind.
    • But in addition to becoming more minimalist, there are other ways I want to share with you that will help increase general peace of mind for your life.
    • Lower your expectations of yourself & others.
    • Having high expectations for others & yourself will only set you up for disappointment. Try to be more flexible & go with the flow, which will bring you more peace, as you won’t be so focused on whether people are living up to your desired potential or not. And just adjust expectations for yourself to be more reasonable.
    • Spend time doing self-discovery.
    • Spend the time you would be using for distractions & dealing with unnecessary possessions instead on getting to know yourself better & understanding who you are & what you want to work towards. This is especially important if you have been avoiding dealing with some tough emotional things because all the distractions in your life. But with those gone, you have time to hone in & work through your recovery.
    • Cut back on the socials.
    • Social media is time consuming & yet another distraction. It also brings up feelings of comparison, worry, depression, anxiety, jealousy, & more. And I’m not saying you shouldn’t use it at all, but have some personal limitations.
    • Don’t live in the past or worry about the future.
    • I know this is easier said than done. Worrying about the future will only cause anxiety & stress due to the unchanging uncertainty of it. Reliving your past will just create a dark cloud over your life indefinitely.
    • Honesty is the best policy.
    • Be honest with yourself about everything & honest with others as much as you can. That way you aren’t hiding any true feelings or stepping over any of your own personal boundaries.
    • Let go of control & the need for certainty.
