  • Reducing Comparison Fatigue - Minimalism & the Mind

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Minimalism & the Mind

This week we are going to speak about how minimalism can positively affect your mindset & make it easier to enjoy your life & the truly important parts.

Join me in learning more about minimalism & how it relates to your daily mindset.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Comparison fatigue is one of those things that we may not realize we are struggling with. It is the mental & emotional fatigue that comes from comparing ourselves to others online, in person or just in theory in our minds.
    • Comparing yourself to others really only brings pain & feelings of being miserable. It’s not fun because it causes you to look at all you have & think it’s worthless or not enough because someone else has more or something you think is better.
    • But I want to point out that you may not understand what that person went through or is going through to achieve the thing or status. It probably isn’t all daisies & sunshine. And you might not know that that person could be just as miserable as you, but really good at hiding it.
    • You have to find a way to come to terms with what you have & be happy in that. You have to find happiness in yourself, not in your lack of things or stature.
    • One of the best things that minimalism will teach you is that things do not bring you happiness or joy. Nor do those things complete you.
    • It is a common idea that the more things you have means you are more successful or better off, when really getting rid of what does not contribute to you fully valuing the important things in your life grants you the freedom to no longer feel less than or inadequate for not being able to keep up with the Jones’.
    • The gift that minimalism gives is the mindshift of no longer having those feelings of not being able to keep up with others in the possessions department when you see them buying something new or going on lavish trips. You just end up being genuinely happy for them that they are doing what makes them happy.

  • What is Minimalism? - Minimalism & the Mind

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Minimalism can be thought about in two different ways. It can be about having as little personal items as possible & just being the best declutter-er. It can also be about wanting to live with less possessions, but also with intention.
    • Just trying to be the best declutter-er is easy, but shouldn’t be the only goal. The idea of minimalism isn’t just about getting rid of all your stuff, but more about getting rid of what you don’t need & focusing on being intentional with the things you do need.
    • Another way to think about it is having a clear understanding of what we value most in life & intentionally highlighting those things because those are important & getting rid of things that take time & focus away from the things that actually matter most.
    • It’s important to note that everyone’s version of being a minimalist is different. There aren’t any specific rules you have to follow, you just need to do what is best for you.
    • But it is important to have a plan going into becoming a minimalist, so you know what you want to get out of practicing this type of lifestyle. And yes, the journey is just as important as the goal, but you might get distracted on your journey if you don’t have a goal in mind.
    • What everyone values is different, which is why your version of minimalism won’t be the exact same as someone else’s. The biggest important factor is that you determine what is most important to you, then get rid of what doesn’t align with that & go along with your values.
    • Minimalism can be a lot of different things to different people, but there are some things it is not. As mentioned before, it’s not just about getting rid of everything. And we shouldn’t be just focusing on what we are giving up, but what we are gaining by giving up those things that don’t bring additional value to your life.
    • It’s also important to note that being a minimalist doesn’t mean you have to spend as little as possible, or not collect items you love & cherish, or that you have to live in empty rooms. A lot of minimalists do spend money on things, but it’s more of an investment of quality items so that there is less replacing having to happen. There is more value in items like that. Same goes for collectables. You just have to be sure those things bring you value in your life. And as far as living in empty rooms, if that is what you want, you should do it. But if not, then just live with what you need, what will truly make you happy & what will keep you focused on what is important.

  • Challenge Your Negative Thoughts - Imposter Syndrome

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Imposter Syndrome

This week we are going to speak about imposter syndrome & how suffering from that can affect your day to day life & your overall mindset.

Join me in learning more about imposter syndrome & how to pull away from the vicious cycle it creates!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I thought it would be helpful to end the week with some helpful tips on how to fight back against the negative thoughts that we have from time to time, or if you’re like me, more often than desired.
    • However, it’s important to realize that we can’t really prevent negative thoughts from creeping up on us, but we can find ways to fight back against those thoughts. Which will prevent us from having our whole mood & day hijacked by negative thoughts.
    • Start by identifying your negative feelings, because taking the time to be more in touch with how you’re feeling & why will help to overcome those feelings & with prevention in the future. Also try to identify any triggers you may have.
    • Next, learn how to let things go. It’s the idea of choosing to move forward & pass on dwelling on any negative thoughts. The CEO of Werk, Ilana Zivkovich, came up with a great acronym to use when wanting to let things go.
    • The acronym is POWER, which stands for Pause, Observe, Widen, Elect & Respond. The basic overview is that when you have a negative thought, first you need to pause & stop the stream of thoughts going on, then observe what you are feeling physically, emotionally & mentally about your current experience, next is to widen your perspective of the situation & really think what could have contributed to those negative thoughts, & lastly elect & respond, which is to choose how you would like to respond to the experience & situation.
    • It's also helpful to use positive affirmations & sef-talk to change your mindset.
    • Make sure that you aren’t shifting any blame onto anyone else when you need to be responsible for what may have caused the negative mindset.
    • Something else that will only make negative thoughts worse & stick around longer is dwelling on things. Nothing good comes from dwelling on negative experiences & no resolutions usually come during those moments, so it’s better to not get sucked into doing that ever. I know hindsight is 20/20, but if you’re going to rehash it, do it only once for the sake of growing & learning what to do or not do next time & move right along.
    • One of my favorite ways to get away from negative thoughts is to just do something else. Distract yourself with a fun activity or hobby you enjoy & get your mind off of it. This time away could also give you perspective on the situation to better know how to move forward.
    • Lastly,  make a list of all the things within the situation, experience or just your general life that you do have control over. This likely will be having control over your attitude, how you handle the thoughts or situation, how you resolve the problem (if there is one) & how you choose to let it affect you going forward.

  • How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome - Imposter Syndrome

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Today we are going to speak on some ways that can help you overcome the struggles of imposter syndrome.
    • First, I recommend starting with identifying when it all started. When did you start to feel like a fraud & was there an event or experience that triggered that feeling.
    • Ask yourself the following questions to dig a little deeper: What is the impact on your life of feeling like a fraud? Do you find any benefits of calling yourself or feeling like a fraud? How different would your life be if you didn’t have imposter feelings? Reflection rocks.
    • Be conscious of your internal narrator & what it’s telling you. Not everything being said in your mind is the absolute truth. We can be the hardest & most damaging to ourselves with our own mind.
    • Practice accepting your mistakes. Part of the reason people struggle with imposter syndrome is believing you have to be the best or perfect at everything. That is not the case. Tell yourself on the regular that you are a work in progress. Make that your mantra if you struggle with those feelings.
    • In addition to that, remember to separate fact from feelings. You may feel imcompetent or dumb or less than, but it doesn’t mean it’s true.
    • Develop a new response to failure. Instead of breaking yourself down, again remind yourself of being a work in progress and that failure is an opportunity for growth & learning. Learn the lesson & then push yourself to move forward.
    • Learn to pat yourself on the back. Accept that you were a part of your success & accomplishments & that you are doing a great job. Reward yourself, too! You deserve it!
    • Embrace positive feedback from others. Learn to accept compliments without deflecting. Get comfortable knowing that you are awesome, valuable & competent.
    • Lastly, figure out what type of imposter syndrome type you are to better understand what is causing your struggle & how to better overcome those feelings.

  • Imposter Syndrome Cycle - Imposter Syndrome

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • Today we are going to discuss the cycle we tend to get stuck in when suffering from imposter syndrome.
    • But before we break each part of the sequence down, let’s go over the different parts of the cycle: it usually starts with the feelings of being a fraud, followed by figuring out why you are feeling this way, then you do your best to negate that reason you came up with, next you end up hitting your target goal that helped you negate the reason you were feeling like a fraud, next any feelings of success start to fade away & finally the cycle starts all over again.
    • Now, let’s break everything down just a little bit more.
    • Step 1: You feel like a fraud. We spoke about this a lot on Monday, so if you want more detail, please listen to that episode, but in a quick summary, you don’t feel like you are worthy of the praise or recognition you have received for any successes or achievements you have had. Also, you have a great fear of being found out or discovered as a fraud, no matter how much confidence everyone else has in you & proof through accomplishments.
    • Step 2: Finding a reason why. You will want to figure out why you are currently feeling like a fake or phony. This could lead you to believe you may need to get additional education, accomplish something bigger & better than before or gain more experience in something important to others.
    • Step 3: Push yourself to overcome that reason why you feel like a fake. You will work really hard to achieve the success you set out to do to not feel like a fake & have the intention of feeling less phony after accomplishing this task.
    • Step 4: You have success! You accomplish your goal & feel good about yourself for a very short amount of time, which was the goal.
    • Step 5: Those feelings of contentment & fullness start to fade away, as always. You realize that you may not have done enough, pushed hard enough, reached high enough or tried hard enough.
    • Step 6: This is when the cycle starts again. Once that success fades away, you have feelings of fakeness again & have to start all over.

  • Imposter Syndrome Types - Imposter Syndrome

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Let’s start with the perfectionist. The perfectionist sets unrealistic high goals for themselves & when they do not hit those goals, major self-doubt & comparing themselves to others really starts to creep in.
    • Perfectionists are rarely satisfied with their successes because they always believe they could have done better. Achievements need to be celebrated in order to avoid this.
    • Signs you are a perfectionist: You tend to micromanage, difficulty delegating because you rather do it yourself, & you tell yourself you aren’t cut out to do the thing you are trying to do when you don’t meet your insanely high expectations.
    • The superwoman/man generally has a workaholic type of outlook & has a strong attitude that they are really a fraud. People of this type generally will push themselves as hard as possible to keep-up with colleagues they feel inferior towards, no matter the consequences.
    •  It’s important to veer away from external validation & receive constructive criticism.
    • Signs you are acting as the superwoman/man: You worker later than everyone else, get stressed when you can’t get work done & don’t want to take breaks, you will sacrifice things you enjoy for work, and you don’t feel deserving of your work title & try to work as hard as possible to earn it.
    • The great mind is the one that feels the need to know & learn things quickly. If they do not, that is seen as failure. These types also have unbearably high expectations set for themself & share characteristics with perfectionists.
    • To overcome this, you have to believe that you aren’t perfect or expected to be & are a work in progress, just like everyone else.
    • Signs you identify with the great mind: familiar with excelling without much effort, you tend to get the best grades & all gold stars in everything, you avoid challenges because it may be too hard & not an easy win, and you have been labeled as the smartest one in the family or group.
    • The soloist is the type that has to do everything on their own, without help. To overcome this, you have to be able to accept help when you need it & tell yourself you actually do need it.
    • Signs you are the soloist: You believe you have to accomplish everything on your own or you don’t need anyone’s help.
    • The expert is the type that bases everything on what they know or what they know how to do. Those suffering can feel less than others if they aren’t informed or have knowledge about certain things others know.
    • Signs you are the expert: You don’t apply for things unless you meet all the requirements, always finding ways to learn & certs to prove that education & have fear when someone identifies you as the expert because of the fear of being exposed as the opposite.

  • What is Imposter Syndrome - Imposter Syndrome

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • I decided to talk about Imposter Syndrome this week because it seems to me that many people suffer from this & it prevents so many people from taking chances on their dreams & desires, as well as feeling confident in the things they know & are passionate about.
    • So, in a quick nutshell, Imposter Syndrome is when someone doubts their abilities, knowledge, accomplishments & talents and continues to have the fear of being exposed as a fraud or a fake. This is also despite what praises or other positive words that come from other people.
    • Imposter syndrome can affect anyone, despite their level of success. However, it appears to afflict many people that are on the road to success. It has also been linked to those suffering from perfectionism & how you feel about your position in a social group/setting.. With imposter syndrome comes feelings of inadequacy & severe self-doubt that contributes to the fraud feelings.
    • Not surprisingly, this affects women more than it does men, but still can affect everyone.
    • It’s interesting that despite the amount of education & professional accomplishments someone can have, imposter syndrome can still sneak up & try to take someone down. You can believe that you aren’t smart, don’t know what you are talking about, like you don’t belong, only got to where you are by luck & have been able to fool everyone into thinking otherwise.
    • Some common symptoms of imposter syndrome is high anxiety, doubting achievements, low self-esteem & some frustration. You might also have thoughts like, “I’m so fake,” “I don’t deserve this job/opportunity/amount of money.”
    • In addition, you can believe that you only got to where you are from other’s help & additional outside sources. And interesting enough, sufferers can be overachievers & someone that ends up sabotaging your own success.
    • The problem with imposter syndrome is that no matter how much success you have or how well things go, this does not change how you feel about yourself. A lot of times, this feeds into a vicious cycle of wrongly identifying what helped us accomplish or get through our current thing. For example, you aced the presentation at the big meeting this morning, but you attribute it to staying up all night to prepare or you get through an anxiety-inducing party but you attribute it to memorizing conversation topics & who would be attending.
    • We will chat more about this as the week goes on.

    • This is probably the episode you have been waiting for all week, how to show kindness to yourself. So let’s talk about how we can do that!
    • Start by taking care of yourself.
    • Work on your inner critic being too harsh. Give yourself a break. No one is perfect. Shut down negative self-talk.
    • Respect yourself. Don’t let others dictate your value & how you feel about yourself. Trust yourself & embrace your own opinions & just truly do you. And hold yourself to the standards you want to be at.
    • Treat yourself every once in a while.
    • Celebrate your growth & accept who you are & are becoming.
    • Stop worrying what other people think about you. Stop trying to fit in. Letting others hold you hostage with their opinions of you is a dreadful life.
    • Make time for sleep.
    • Ask for help when you need it.
