  • How to Trust Again - Relationship Struggles

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Relationship Struggles

Relationships can be super tough, but it's important to remember that in the end, it's totally worth it because the hard stuff is what creates a stronger & deeper bond with your partner.

I want to talk about some of the hard things that come with being in relationships & how to get through those things & have amazing bonds.

Join me in learning more about relationship struggles this week!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Take whatever time you need to grieve. No matter how the trust was broken, you will need time to heal. The time frame on that will differ depending on how you process things & honestly what caused the trust issues.
    • Get in touch with your inner self. This could be prayer, meditation or just sitting quietly in a serene environment. The reason this is important is because usually when trust issues happen, you also end up not trusting yourself anymore because you think you aren’t able to make sound judgements, see red flags of someone breaking your trust or feel like you can make decisions that won’t cause you hurt in the end. Work on trusting yourself again & listening to your inner voice & intuition. This will help you to make the decisions you need to in the future & maybe be more aware of possible red flags.
    • Make communication a top priority. Building trust with someone requires really good communication. You need to be open & honest with your partner & encourage them to do so, as well. If you are feeling uncomfortable about something, speak up & let them know. And make sure you define how important communication is to you from the start of the relationship.
    • Forgiveness is hard, but necessary. If you keep all those negative feelings from your trust being abused, you’re only hurting yourself. And forgive yourself, if you are blaming anything that happened on yourself. By giving forgiveness, you are empowering yourself to come face to face with what happened, let it go & move on without it lingering or haunting you.
    • Do not dwell on the past. When your trust is compromised, you might want to hold onto that hurt because you are afraid of it happening again or as an excuse to not try again. I’m here to tell you that part of your healing includes not dwelling on what happened. It will not help you prevent it from happening again & only hold you back from opening your heart again.
    • You’re responsible for your own happiness. You get to decide when you want to move on & move forward. You get to decide when you want to try getting into a new relationship again & you get to decide when this hurt is no longer holding you back from being happy again. If what you need to do is be alone for a bit before jumping into something new, do it. But do not use the excuse of what happened to you as your reason you cannot be happy. It will not hold up for long.
    • Taking it slow when entering new relationships. Let yourself get comfortable before moving to any other steps in the relationship & don’t rush it.

  • Makings of Good & Bad Relationships - Relationship Struggles

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Putting your partner in the position of being your everything in life is bad. Don’t become the person you THINK your partner wants you to be & don’t make everything all about them. Be your own person, have your own thoughts & opinions, hobbies & time to yourself. You can’t throw your whole identity away just because you found someone you love & cherish. No one is worth that sacrifice. And if they want you to do that for them, they might be a narcissist & that’s a red flag to re-think this whole thing.
    • Learning to share your feelings & be vulnerable is amazing growth. I mentioned it yesterday, but getting better at sharing your feelings & emotions & general intimacy is such an amazing bonus of being in a relationship. It’s not healthy keeping that all inside & the ability to be honest, open & vulnerable with your partner creates a stronger bond & greater trust between you both.
    • Stop trying to fix your partner. It’s not your job or responsibility to fix anything about your partner. And if you feel this is your duty, you need to re-evaluate your boundaries. Everyone is in charge of their own emotions, actions, decisions & mistakes.
    • Know that compromise doesn’t make you weak. I mentioned compromise in yesterday’s episode & I want to draw it out a little bit here. Compromise is important, because it means you care about what the other person wants but also are aware of your own needs, which is also important. But just the idea of compromise might make some believe you are giving up completely on what you want, when you really aren’t. You are recognizing that there is someone else here that also has a voice & that voice needs to be heard & acknowledged.
    • There is no excuse for disrespect. It doesn’t matter how much someone loves you, there is no room for disrespect or having the expectation that your partner will forgive you if you do something wrong, knowingly or not. Make sure you are thanking them, not taking them for granted, & not fall into the trap that love is blind & you can doing anything you want & expect them to back you up all the time.
    • Working as a team is a deep part of being in a relationship. I know I just said that you can’t expect your partner to back you up all the time, but that was specifically if you are knowingly doing dumb crap & expecting them to turn a blind eye because love is involved. Outside of that, one of the best things about growing as a couple is having each other’s backs & coming together as a team to solve problems & create goals.

  • Why Are Relationships So Hard?? - Relationship Struggles

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • You gotta have difficult convos.  If you want to build trust, get through disagreements & become closer, you have to be able to talk to the person you are in a relationship with. Communication in general is paramount when you are with someone. The relationship will become stronger not because of all the things you have in common or like about each other, but the ability to deal with conflict & have tough conversations.
    • Vulnerability is necessary. But you have to do it because if you keep your heart closed & distance yourself emotionally from your partner, that relationship has no chance! You’re not being honest, open & true with them if you aren’t vulnerable. And you may get away with it in the beginning, but it won’t last once they find out you aren’t really sharing who you truly are. Take it slow if it scares you.
    • Expectations & taking things for granted.  A lot of times we have these expectations of what we want & need & sometimes those can be too high/unrealistic & our other halves just can’t seem to live up to those levels. This can cause a divide & much unhappiness. It’s important to stay away from having unrealistic expectations of others & to stop comparing your relationship to someone else’s. Along with this is being careful to not take things for granted. It becomes far too easy to start getting comfortable in the relationship & not being as excited about those little things our partner does for us. We just start expecting it. Remembering that each little gesture & appreciation moments means something to the person doing it & should to the one receiving it.
    • You still got your own baggage. Sometimes relationships can bring up old crap. And a lot of times this cannot be helped. However, the thing that will help is by taking the time to heal your issues. No longer can you blame it on the person you started to get involved with. It’s not their fault their presence brought up these past feelings, emotions, memories in you. What you have to actually realize is that you had a band-aid on the situation the whole time. Honestly, if this person comes into your life & ends up poking holes in what you thought was your healing, that’s probably for the best. It means you still have some healing to do.
    • It takes actual work & dedication. The initial excitement will dim at some point & you will have to start actually nourishing the relationship. You will have to come up with new exciting things or reignite old ones, look for ways to become closer & deeper & make sure you are on the same page for what you both want out of the relationship.

  • The Benefits of Being Assertive - Assertiveness

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Assertiveness

Assertiveness might not be something you think about often or think is super important, but knowing how to be assertive comes in handy during so many different times in our lives.

Some might quickly categorize this as something super important to have at work, which is true, but is great to practice in your personal life, too. You don’t want to be known on the downlow as someone that can be walked all over. But you also don’t want to be seen as that overly aggressive person that no one feels comfortable talking to.

Join me in learning more about being assertive this week!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • So now that we have spent the week talking about what makes someone assertive, comparing being assertive to being passive to being aggressive & how to become more assertive, it leads me to talk about how becoming more assertive will benefit you a ton.
    • But right now, let’s discuss the benefits of being assertive. First off, being assertive will help you gain more self-confidence & higher self-esteem. You’re out there, holding your head up high & being more confident in what you’re saying & expressing your true feelings. When people can express themselves freely without fear of others, the confidence shoots to the moon.
    • In addition to becoming more confident & having higher self-esteem, you will also understand & recognize your feelings better. When you suppress your emotions & desires you end up not knowing who you are anyone.By actually acknowledging those feelings & letting them out for people to hear & receive, you become more comfortable with how you truly feel & being okay with letting those emotions out.
    • You will also gain more respect from others. By being more secure in who you are & what you’re saying, people will naturally trust you more, respect more & really understand who you are & what you’re about. Confidence comes from knowing what you want & figuring out what to do about it.
    • Naturally, your communication skills will improve. By learning to become more assertive, you will be able to get your thoughts, feelings & main points across more clearly. You will be direct, yet welcoming in your communication approach & be able to share your thoughts without becoming too concerned about what other people think or feel about your views & opinions.
    • And not only your communication skills, but your decision-making skills. You will be able to make decisions based on what you think is best for you, but also everyone else, if that is applicable. Decisions will also be based less on emotions & come from a more neutral place. You will be able to spot the happy medium & balance of serving yourself & others at the same time.
    • Lastly, by being more assertive, you will accomplish more. When you are free with your thinking & no longer afraid to take action because of what someone else would say or think, you try more things & get more done.
    • There are many more other benefits to being assertive, but these are an important few I thought would be helpful to highlight.

  • How to Become an Assertive Person - Assertiveness

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Today I wanted to give you some easy tips on how you can become an assertive person. Maybe you struggle with being assertive, like me, & need some pointers on how to improve.
    • First off, being assertive requires you to be able to communicate openly & honestly with others. You need to be able to say what you mean & feel, while also admitting to any mistakes or wrongdoings. Being honest & transparent is the key to gaining more respect, loyalty & trust.
    • Next, while communicating openly & honestly is important, you need to also be able to communicate clearly. Be more direct & concise with what you have to say.  The best way to know if you are being clear is to ask yourself if what you’re saying even makes sense to you. Also, listening more than speaking is always great advice.
    • Also, make sure your body language is in line with what you are saying. Make eye contact when speaking, stand up tall but still look welcoming, smile if you find it’s appropriate, give firm handshakes & just feel your confidence through your whole body, not just your mind.
    • You need to be ok to deal with confrontation. Embrace the opportunity to learn from the other person/people & push yourself to endure the challenge of getting through the conflict.
    • Being assertive also has to do with being able to control your emotions. People will take you seriously if you can control of yourself when needed & not overreact. Also, think before you react. It will prevent you from saying something you may regret.
    • Show respect to others. Being assertive is being able to achieve the balance of serving yourself & others at the same time. Easy ways to show respect is to listen without interrupting, stop judging others, seek to actually understand what is being communicated & be approachable when someone wants to give or receive feedback.
    • And lastly, some quick hitters: Speak up when you speak because what you have to say matters, despite how others will react. Don’t say sorry if you haven’t done anything wrong. Speak up for what you believe, what you need & what you want. And of course, remember & know that you are in charge of your behavior & other people are in charge of theirs. Be confident enough in what you think, feel & believe that it doesn’t matter what others say to you or about you.
    • The best way to get better at being assertive is obviously to practice in real life. And don’t give up on yourself if you find you falter in the beginning.

  • The 3 Basic Communication Styles - Assertiveness

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

    • Today I want to use some comparisons so that it’s easy to understand whether you are being aggressive, passive or assertive & just a brief overview of all three.
    • Let’s start with an easy one. If you are passive, you give into everything someone tells/asks you to do. If aggressive, you take control of the situation & end up being the one telling people what they have to do. But if you’re assertive, you compromise.
    • If you are passive, you are constantly trying to keep the peace with everyone & cause no waves. If aggressive, you really are only looking out for yourself. But if you’re assertive, you will make sure everything is fair for everyone involved, without leaving anyone out.
    • If you are passive, you tend to allow others to bully you. If aggressive, let’s face it, you’re the bully. But if you’re assertive, you will stand up for yourself.
    • If you are passive, it’s going to be very rare that you say what you think or really speak at all. If aggressive, you will speak aggressively, shout, possible violence will occur & you will talk over others & not allow them to speak at all. But if you’re assertive, you end up expressing your point very clearly & with confidence & also have a balance of both speaking & listening.
    • This is a good one because the passive & aggressive are very similar, which is interesting. If you are passive, you will tend to damage your relationships because people end up respecting you less. If aggressive, you will also end up damaging your relationships because peeps don’t like aggression. But if you’re assertive, you end up enhancing relationships because they know you well & know where you stand on most things.
    • Here is a small thing, but I believe it is super important with communication. If you are passive, you avoid eye contact with others. If aggressive, it's more of a judgemental stare. But if you’re assertive, you just maintain eye contact.
    • If you are passive, you believe everyone else is more valuable than you are. If aggressive, you tend to hurt others to avoid getting hurt yourself. But if you’re assertive, you value yourself & respect others.
    • This is the last one & my fav: If you are passive, you have soft or no boundaries at all. If aggressive, you can be very demanding but also have hard boundaries. But if you’re assertive, you have healthy boundaries that set good limits for yourself.

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

Join me in learning more about being assertive this week!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I want to go through a series of questions to ask yourself & briefly talk about why or why not that relates to being assertive.
    • So the first question to ask yourself is: Are you able to say ‘no’ without feeling guilty or anxious?
    • Part of being assertive is being able to create & abide by your personal boundaries, no matter how intense or aggressive the situation gets. You want to have the strength to say ‘no’ when you want to & not get convinced otherwise.
    • Next question: Are you able to express strong feelings, like anger, frustration or disappointment?
    • Asserting how you feel & sharing those feelings with the people that need to know is super important. If someone hurts you, disrespects you or any other offense, you need to have the strength to tell them how that made you feel.
    • Next question: Are you able to acknowledge & take responsibility for your own mistakes?
    • Being assertive means you need to be able to own up to your own mistakes & faults. Accept that you took a wrong path, made and error, learn from it & move on.
    • Next question: Can you discuss your beliefs without judging those who don’t agree with you?
    • Not only do you need to be assertive in your own beliefs, but you need to be secure enough in your own stance that is someone else has different beliefs, it isn’t going to affect you. In addition to this, ask your self if you can also express your honest opinion to others, even if you know they won’t agree with you. It’s kind of the flip side.
    • Next question: Can you speak confidently in groups?
    • Being assertive, that gentle balance between being aggressive & passive, includes being able to voice your opinion, outloud, & feel confident in what you’re saying, despite what others may think.
    • Next question: Are you comfortable delegating tasks to others?
    • There will probably be times in your life where you need to tell family members, friends, people you are managing in a volunteer setting what they need to do & how to do it. Even moreover, you might need to correct them on something, too.
    • Here is the last question for you: Do you deal with conflict head-on?
    • I want you to know that dealing with conflict straight on & not running away or avoid it is strong. And necessary. You can’t avoid all your problems or issues. You need to access your inner strength & confidence & handle the struggles as soon as you can.

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Join me in learning more about being assertive this week!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Being assertive is a core communication skill that can help you express your feelings & control your stress & anger & improve coping skills.
    • Today I just want to briefly go over what it means to be assertive so there is some context when we talk about it more in depth during the week.
    • Firstly, being assertive means you are able to stand up for your own or someone else’s rights, while still being calm & positive. This also means doing it without being aggressive or being passive & just accepting everyone’s crap or that you are in the wrong. This will allow you to respect others’ rights & beliefs at the same time.
    • Being assertive can also help to boost your self-esteem & earn others’ respect.
    • By bettering your self-esteem & gaining respect from others, your stress levels will naturally come down & you’ll feel better about yourself.
    • Another way to look at this is that the ability to be assertive allows people to act in their own best interests, while also standing up for themselves without too much anxiety & be able to express honest feelings without feeling awkward & express personal rights without getting in the way of someone else’s rights.
    •  Assertiveness is based on mutual respect, which makes it a really effective way to communicate with most people. When you’re properly being assertive, you are showing respect to yourself because you are willing to stand-up for yourself, your thoughts & feelings. But there is also respect for the other person, their rights & taking the most respectful approach for resolving conflicts.
    • Assertive communication is direct & respectful & it gives you the best chance of successfully getting your message across to the other person. You don’t want to be passive & no one takes you seriously or be aggressive & no one can hear what you’re saying because they don’t understand anything beyond your anger.
    • Here are some assertive behaviors to note: Being open in expressing your wishes, thoughts & feelings & encouraging others to do the same. Listening to other’s views & responding appropriately, whether in agreement or not. Accepting responsibility, being able to admit to your own mistakes & make the appropriate apologies & being able to delegate things to other people. Making sure to express appreciation for others for what they have done or are doing. And maintaining self-control & behaving as as equal to others.

  • Have an End of Week Check-In - How to Have the Best Week Ever!

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: How to Have the Best Week Ever!

I think it’s always helpful to have some tips on how to have a great week or at least set it up with the best intentions.

I do want to make mention that by no means will these tips or any tips you get from anyone give you a perfect week or the best week ever FOR SURE because of life's uncertainties.

However, you CAN do your best to set yourself up for the best possible week ever & have the positive mindset that it will turn out as best it can.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Now that I have given you some ideas for how to have the best week ever, I now want to suggest doing an end of the week check-in. By doing a check-in, it will help you evaluate how you believe the week went, what you might want to change for the upcoming week & just have a chance to take a step back from everything that already happened & get any stress off your chest.
    • When you do this exercise, I suggest using a journal or notebook to take notes & write down what your answers to the questions you are going to ask yourself.
    • First you’re going to start with ‘I Feel…’ and ask yourself how you are feeling at the end of this week. Do you feel like you could have given up several times during the week? Do you feel satisfied with everything you accomplished? You you feel beat down? Ask yourself how you are feeling at the end of this week & make sure to answer truthfully.
    • Next, go down the road of ‘I Need’ & ask yourself what you need, now that the week is over. Do you need some extra downtime because of how the week treated you? Do you need to schedule some time with your counselor in the coming future because of what happened during the week? Do you need to work on being more organized, more knowledgeable, more calm or more understanding about something for the upcoming week?
    • After that, go with the ‘I Forgive’ train of thought. Is there something you need to forgive yourself for? Do you need to forgive someone else for something they did to you?
    • Next up is ‘I Celebrate’ which is such a fun one. What do you need to celebrate about the week? Did you accomplish big things? Or maybe just celebrate accomplishing anything & everything!
    • Second to last one is ‘I Release’ which can be one of the tougher ones. What do you need to release because it has been taking up too much space in your life, in your mind, in your heart? Maybe you need to release a grudge you have against someone. Maybe you need to release some romantic feelings for someone that you just know in your heart isn’t going to work out. Or it could be the need to release some pent up aggression, anger, stress, or sadness. If you are one to keep your feelings locked down all the time, take this opportunity to release it all, even if just to yourself in the comfort of a private moment. Or to a trusted friend, mentor or counselor.
    • Lastly, go through ‘I Trust’ & come up with things you need to trust more. Do you need to trust yourself more? Trust your confidence more? Trust certain people in your life more? Trust the process of life more? Figure out what it is for you & how you can trust it more.

    Happy Thursday!

    • And today I want to quickly chat about how to have your mental health on point so that you are ready to take on the week, with all of it’s uncertainties & complexities.
    • First off, go into the week knowing that something bad will happen. And I don’t believe this is going in with a negative outlook at all because your mindset will be different if you expect that not everything will be perfectly in line & up to snuf every single moment of the day & week.
    • If you get your mindset to a point where it is flexible & are able to manage your expectations for the week, you will set yourself up to have the best week ever.
    • In addition to that, if you suffer from anxiety, I find that it is very helpful to have a few things planned during your week that you can look forward to & know are coming. Anxiety is based heavily on fear of what could happen & by having a few things already scheduled in to your week, you have those things to look forward to & less time to worry about what could happen with any free time that is coming up.
    • It’s also helpful to find something within every task, appointments or events that you have to be a part of for the week, that you can be in control of for the sake of your anxiety. It will help lower your stress a bit & you won’t be wading in the fear of uncertainty as much if you have your little piece of control to hang onto. But be careful with control, as it can form into something much bigger & more problematic if taken too far.
    • Something else that is helpful is to plan in some self care time during the week. This could be your saving grace when something doesn’t go as planned or just an added bonus to a week that is going along well.
    • Also make time for the things that spark so much crazy joy in your heart. Whether that is a hobby, side hustle or physical activity that you always feel better after putting time into.
    • I know that on Monday’s episode I talked briefly about cleaning through the week or before the week starts, but if clutter upsets you as much as it does me, I encourage you to organize what you need organized before your week begins.
    • This could really help with any anxiety or stress that comes when you don’t know where something is & feel overwhelmed when everything is out of place.
    • Lastly, make sure you are focusing on the present moments you are in every single day. Enjoy what is happening right now. It will allow you to stop worrying so much about what is going to happen or what mistakes were already made.

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!
