  • Creating Attainable Goals - Creating SMART Goals

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Creating SMART Goals

The concept of SMART goals was created originally by George T. Doran in 1981. He was a consultant that wrote down the acronym for an article talking about management goals.

This week I want to break down each step of the formula & what you need to know to create the best goals ever!

Hopefully, this helps you spend a little more time creating the best & easiest goals to accomplish.

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Attainable goals are ones that can actually happen. Like realistically.
    • If your goal isn’t something that can actually happen, it shouldn’t be a goal.
    • This is why you have to really evaluate your goals. I’m not saying you need to obsess over it or anything, but taking the time to really look into the future, evaluate your skills & resources to see if it’s something you can obtain.
    • But I do want to make sure you know that you shouldn’t confuse fear with not believing your goal is unattainable. Those are two different things. If you have a hard time distinguishing, you might want to have someone you trust help you figure out which way you are leaning & don’t let fear get you caught up.
    • But again, don’t try to trick yourself or mislead yourself if you REALLY don’t think it could actually be done.
    • I understand that certain goals take some time to complete & work towards, but if you know deep inside your heart that it just isn’t realistic, consider something else.
    • Now let’s say that you do decide that your goal isn’t attainable. This doesn’t mean you need to give up or move on from it. You can take the time to see what you need to make it attainable & decide if those things are something you can work up to or get help for.
    • I also think it’s important to decide if the goal you are choosing isn’t too easy for you. Because if it is, then it’s not a real challenge, nor a real goal if it’s something you can accomplish real quick.
    • True goals should be reserved for things that take time, dedication, learning experiences & some work.

  • Creating Measurable Goals - Creating SMART Goals

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Making sure your goals are measurable will help you keep track of your progress.
    • Goals that aren’t measurable make it hard to track progress & give you any idea of how far you have come & where you are headed based on how you are progressing.
    • Not keeping track of your progress can also cause a lack of motivation.
    • And you might not even know you have hit your goals if you don’t keep track of your progress.
    • If I haven’t made it clear by now, the biggest thing is to know is when you have accomplished your goal.
    • And example of a goal that isn’t measurable is saying you are going to be the best at something. That is hard to measure because it’s very opinion based. A way to make that measurable is you will gain this many clients, make this many sales or run this many miles.
    • Basically, your goal will need to include a number or something that can be counted for it to be measurable.
    • I find that keeping a journal, planner or Excel spreadsheet up to date with your goals will help you document those measurables & progress.
    • The planner that I have allows me to update my top 3 goals each day and add in a focus for each day. But I also have google sheets that help me keep track of online content, which allows me to track my progress of getting to however many posts, ect.
    • It honestly does not matter how you track it. Just find the best way that works for you.
    • There are many phone apps that work for progress tracking, as well. One that I really like for iPhone is called Goal Streaks and it’s free. It allows you to create a list of things that you can check off each time you complete it, create reminders for when it needs to be done & any exceptions you may need to incorporate.
    • I think I have hit on all the important things for making sure your goals are measurable.
    • Find a way to track your progress & make sure your goals can actually be measured.

  • Creating Specific Goals - Creating SMART Goals

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • I love this whole idea on how to create & maintain goals for yourself. It really is such a great formula. It takes a lot of confusion out of creating goals & gets you off on the best start!
    • And I just want to mention that this formula may not work for you or be something that seems like the most fun, but I believe that breaking things down into categories & understanding why & how to do things best is really helpful.
    • Now the first part of this formula is being specific about your goal.
    • You need to truly define what your goal is, as this will help you stay focused on it.
    • The more detailed and specific your goal is, the better it will be & easier to work towards.
    • Ask yourself what you want to accomplish. Take some time to write down what the end result will be and how it will feel to have accomplished your goal.
    • Using questions like Who, What, Where, When, Why & How will lead you down the right mindset.
    • I do want to point out that the Why question is one of the most important ones to ask yourself. Among any other questions that you ask yourself, you HAVE to know the Why behind what you are doing.
    • If you don’t, there won’t be a real drive behind what you think you want to do.

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!

  • How to Break the Vicious Cycle of Codependency - Codependency

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Codependency

Codependency is something many People Pleasers & Perfectionists will struggle with, as well as many others within relationships used to mask & distract from other things in their lives. It's also one of the most common behaviors of those raised by narcissists or someone struggling with an addiction.

Here is some information & tips to overcome this struggle & be free of depending on others for validation!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • I am going to get right to it in this episode and lay out some real tips on how to become less codependent.
    • If you would like some more info how what it means to be codependent & how it affects the person struggling with it, please go back and listen to all the previous episodes this week.
    • The first thing that I would recommend is creating boundaries. And if you’re not new here, you know I talk about establishing personal boundaries ALL THE TIME.
    • By creating boundaries, you will create personal limits that will prevent you from overextending yourself, becoming too emotionally involved & creating time for yourself, rather than running yourself ragged for everyone else.
    • Learning to say ‘no’ is another big thing to do. I know that codependents have a deep-seeded need for everyone to like them, so it might be hard to say ‘no’ despite wanting to, but it’s something you have to start practicing as soon as possible to create those boundaries.
    • Learn how to support others without trying to take over the situation & save them from their problems. It’s fine to give someone advice & encouragement, but let them deal with their problems on their own.
    • Learn to ask for help. I know it can be tough to ask for help because you want to be seen as the hero & take care of others on your own, but sometimes what you can offer may not be enough.
    • Change the way you think about yourself. You may think you are worthless, unimportant, have low self-esteem & find validation in others praising you for helping them, but it is necessary to change your belief system and not always connect your self-worth with people since not everyone will like you.
    • Stop being a martyr. Always trying to make others like you by going all out for them puts you at risk for being manipulated & burning out from all that unnecessary sacrifice.
    • Stop taking responsibility for other people’s actions.
    • Stop trying to fix everything for others.
    • Stop being a people pleaser.
    • Work on being able to communicate & express your emotions honestly & openly.
    • Learn how to deal with conflict & stop avoiding it. This is another one dealing with healthy communication skills.
    • Lastly, make sure you have people in your life that support you & are there to help you get better & become stronger in who you are, not who you are trying to mold into for someone else.

Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!

  • Martyr Syndrome - Codependency

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • A martyr is someone that feels the need to unnecessarily sacrifice themselves for others, no matter the cost, while ignoring their own needs.
    • The idea of Martyr Syndrome is the behavior pattern where someone seeks pain & suffering to feel good about themself, as the idea of giving everything for others & nothing for yourself makes you a better person.
    • I’ve found that some of the reasons people take on this struggle is because our parents demonstrated this behavior to us when we were younger, so we inherently grow-up doing it, too. As well as it being the socially acceptable thing to do in your culture (strict gender roles & expectations).
    • The one I find most common is due to self-esteem & personal beliefs, as having low self-esteem & thinking less of ourselves causes us to try & do more for others to prove that we are better than we really think we are. It’s a coping mechanism & also allows them to use focusing on others as an excuse to not take responsibility for negative things in their life.
    • Moms suffer from Mommy Martyr or Perfect Mommy Syndrome. This obviously has more to do with doing everything for the sake of your child, like taking on all chores because you don’t want to impose any of that work on them, not making anytime for yourself, putting your husband second to your child & believing that giving your child everything they want is your duty.
    • Some of the ways you can tell if you suffer from Martyr Syndrome: You stay in abusive relationships, despite how it affects you negatively, You constantly portray yourself as super nice, self-sacrificing, a hero type, constant reassurance of greatness & innocence, exaggerated level of suffering, hard time saying ‘no’ and setting boundaries, there is ALWAYS a new problem to solve or be apart of, they can emotionally manipulate others into doing stuff for them by portraying themself as high & mighty, yet needy, and lastly constantly seeking appreciation & recognition with guilt & manipulation.
    • Some quick ideas to break this cycle of victim behavior: Let go of guilt for wanting to take care of yourself, stop using the need to focus on others problems as an excuse to not focus on your own problems & things that need attention, learn to say ‘no’ & establish personal boundaries, own up to the things you have the power to change in your life & actually make those changes for things to be better, improve & practice positive communication behaviors, & get help from a professional if you are having trouble overcoming these behaviors on your own.
    • Just remember that it is not selfish to focus & do things for yourself. Doing so will equip you to help others after you spend the time helping yourself first.

  • Lack of Boundaries - Codependency

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Wednesday!

    • As I have mentioned in the previous episodes this week, one of the biggest reasons people struggle with codependency is due to lack of boundaries.
    • Please give a listen to last week’s episodes that talk all about boundaries. It will be more in-depth than the brief overview I am about to do now.
    • One of the main reasons codependents let their boundaries be violated is due to the fear of rejection by someone we care for.
    • It’s also scary to create boundaries, for fear those in their lives will punish us for creating boundaries that will affect them somehow or cut off current control.
    • Many people dealing with codependency have also suffered from shame & rejection, making creating boundaries tough because they aren’t going to want to put anything in the way of people liking them, loving them, being close to them or anything else that could possibly be negative in the relationship.
    • Codependents crave love, but also fear love, so they tend to lose themselves trying to balance it all & keep love as long as possible, no matter the costs.
    • You will know you have a lack of boundaries if you give up too much of your time, don’t speak up when mistreated or taken advantage of, you agree when you actually want to agree, you do things out of obligation, you minimize your own feelings & you have toxic relationships.
    • To start your breakaway from being codependent, start implementing boundaries.
    • Establishing boundaries is one of the best things anyone could ever do for themself.
    • One of the best things that will come from establishing boundaries is actually getting your needs met & putting yourself first, as opposed to everyone else.
    • You will also improve any damaged relationships or finally rid yourself of any toxic ones.
    • As I always suggest, get help if you don’t think you can get started with boundaries on your own. There is no shame in asking for help.

  • Struggles of People Pleasers - Codependency

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • As I mentioned in yesterday’s episode, People Pleasers suffer greatly from being codependent because of the lack of boundaries, ignoring personal needs & the obvious obsession & need for validation from others.
    • And just some food for thought, many People Pleasers start off as Parent Pleasers.
    • Today I am going to break down some of the struggles People Pleasers go through & how to overcome those troubles.
    • One of the first things you can do is take a breath before you commit to anything.
    • When you are asked to do something, really take a moment to think about whether you actually have the time & bandwidth to commit to the request.
    • This also includes evaluating all the times you said ‘yes’ in the past when you really should have said ‘no’ & use those reflections to make better choices in the future.
    • In addition to that, ask if it is fair to you or anyone else in your life if it is fair to commit.
    • Work on creating boundaries. Specifically, limit your availability for others so you don’t overcommit or get in over your head.
    • Adding onto that, if you REALLY want to commit to something that might be overwhelming, come to terms with the fact that you will have to ask for help & actually do that.
    • One of the biggest things People Pleasers will need to do is accept any possible negative reactions or backlash from those that may be upset when you say ‘no’ to them.
    • Learning to tolerate people being upset at you (which will happen no matter what) will make you stronger in the end & allow you to stay true to who you are & your values.
    • Avoiding conflict will not make the situation better, but eventually worse & possibly cause you to compromise your values.
    • Lastly, I want to hit on the fact that trying so hard to please everyone in your life will only lead you towards resentment & damaged relationships. If you really value your relationships, work to preserve those by creating & abiding by boundaries.

  • What is Codependency? - Codependency

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Monday!

    • Codependency is an unhealthy focus on other people’s problems, feelings, and needs.
    • It’s also the extreme need to be dependent on others & feel wholly responsible for their feelings & actions.
    • A hallmark of those struggling with this is that approval from others is more important than respecting themself. Doing whatever they can for that person, while completely ignoring themself.
    • One of the reasons specifically it is unhealthy is because this focus will still be present, despite how negatively it impacts their mental & physical health & general personal well-being.
    • This will result in the interference of identity development.
    • It’s like letting yourself become consumed in someone else’s life & not even knowing who you are after taking a step back. You’re basically a shell of a person.
    • People Pleasers & Perfectionists suffer greatly from being codependent because they are all about what others think about them & basing their worth off of those opinions,
    • There is also an outlook of them trying to save others from themselves, which also brings in the element of control over something & making themselves feel important to others.
    • Here are some traits of someone that struggles with codependency: obsessive worry over others, letting yourself become too involved in other’s drama, fear of making waves or rocking the boat, it’s easier for you to take care of others rather than yourself, and you probably struggle with guilt & shame.
    • There are many more signs that can determine someone struggling with codependency, which we will get into later in the week, but for today this is just an overview.

  • How to Set Boundaries - Personal Boundaries

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Friday!

This week's theme for the podcast is: Personal Boundaries

Personal boundaries are key is establishing & maintaining stability within mental health. Knowing how to create & maintain boundaries are also skills that will become invaluable & crucial to daily happiness & self-acceptance.

Here are some great ideas on how to create, improve & maintain Personal Boundaries!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

    • Let me start by listing some of the benefits of establishing boundaries: better relationships, greater assertiveness, more compassion, less anger & resentment, feeling respect for yourself & others, increased confidence, less stress & anxiety.
    • Something I mentioned in yesterday’s episode I will repeat again today is to address boundary violations early so things don’t get out of hand or you let your feeling build up. That’s not good for anyone, especially you.
    • So some key things for how to set boundaries & maintain those successfully is to start with clearly identify your own boundaries & know why you need them.
    • I know I am always bringing it back to self-awareness, but you have to know that it’s important. It’s an absolute.
    • After you do both of those things, make sure you are always straightforward with others about boundaries & don’t apologize or give any long explanations for implementing your boundaries. It’s your decision to make & others should respect that.
    • But I would make sure you are cognizant of how share this with others. Make sure you are always calm & polite.
    • Don’t let guilt eat you up. Know it’s ok to say no, do less things & have a little more breathing room for yourself.
    • A couple quick points to end this week’s series on: get your happiness from gratitude, not status.
    • Focus on your progress of maintain boundaries, not perfection.
    • Prioritize your needs and ask for help when you need it.

  • Dealing with Backlash in Regards to Personal Boundaries - Personal Boundaries

Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!

Thank you so much for joining me again!

    Happy Thursday!

    • Not everyone is going to be ok with you setting boundaries for yourself, especially if they have been walking all over you & taking advantage.
    • But the #1 thing I will tell you about boundaries is that you need to stand strong & maintain those boundaries for those to work.
    • And boundaries WILL work for you if you work to keep them.
    • But not everyone will accept your boundaries at first or at all. Keep that in mind. But for the peeps that DO & stick by your side, keep them close.
    • Also know that boundaries can result in certain relationships ending, which is something you should be ready for, more so with the people YOU KNOW are toxic and really just need to go anyway.
    • Try not to take it personal if people don’t accept your new way of life because it’s their problem they aren’t willing to accept you & your changes. It might feel VERY devastating at first, but it’s all about your mental health & what is best for you. It will be fine after some time.
    • And know that having boundaries is NOT selfish. It’s just you taking care of yourself, which we are all responsible to do.
    • Something else that will help is to address boundary violations early. Don’t let these types of things build up & overflow. You shouldn’t do that with any emotions, actually.
    • If you have a fear of confrontation, conflict and don’t ever want to create a hassle for someone, just know these things will prevent you from maintaining boundaries.
    • You shouldn’t have to sacrifice what you need in order to demonstrate your care for someone else.
    • Brene Brown said it best in this quote, “Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others.”
