  • 42: Be a Problem Solver

    This week, Brady handles how gun violence is a public health issue, and why diversity in research really, really matters. To do so, JJ is joined by Vice President of Policy at Brady, Christian Heyne,  JP Thomas, Senior Program Manager at Brady, and Dr. Daniel Webster, the Bloomberg Professor of American Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Today, Daniel is here to discuss everything from the boyfriend loophole to John Hopkins' free course on gun violence prevention.

    Then, in our "unbelievable, but" segment, JJ is talking about why you shouldn't test strange guns you find in malls (seriously, folks), followed by wrapping up our time together with a selection of gun violence, and gun violence prevention, news from this week...and then a very special message from JP.

    • Reducing Gun Violence in America: Evidence for Change course
    • Firearm Purchaser Licensing Teach-Out: The Background Check Policy Not Enough People Are Talking About course

  • 41: David Chipman on the ATF, the Tiahrt Amendment, and More

    This week, Brady tackles  policing, intentional data loss, and how to get rid of guns in a forge. Today, JJ and Vice President of Policy at Brady, Christian Heyne, are joined by David Chipman, a Senior Policy Advisor at the gun violence prevention organization Giffords, and currently serves on the Firearms Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He also served for 25 years as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, aka, the ATF. Today, David is here to detail why the Tiahrt Amendment (which prohibits the ATF from maintaining a searchable database--instead, officers attempting to trace a gun used in the commission of a crime must use a card catalog and phone system to track the weapon) is harming the American people, and why technologies like Shot Spotter are changing gun violence prevention.

  • 39: History in the Making

    JJ is joined by Brady President Kris Brown, and State Director of Virginia at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Lori Haas. Together, we're talking about what happened this Monday--namely, that though it has been YEARS since significant gun violence prevention legislation has cleared committee in the state of Virginia, it happened today! And the rest of the country should be paying attention, because it was only November that Virginia voters altered the balance of power, electing a gun violence prevention majority to the state legislature. Something, that if you asked Virginians a few years ago, they would have said was HIGHLY unlikely.  Yet, here we are!

  • 38: It's a Matter of Faith
    A Bishop, a Rabbi, and an Imam come on a podcast...no, it's not a joke, it's an amazing conversation. We do laugh a lot though! JJ is joined by three great men-the retired Bishop Mark Beckwith, the Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, and Imam W. Deen Shareef. All of them graciously are here to talk about how gun violence, and gun violence prevention, is a matter of faith. Together, we’re discussing the idea of scapegoating, the role of faith in gun violence prevention, arming religious institutions, and more. Then, in our “unbelievable, but” segment, we’re talking not about men of the cloth, but a man of Florida, and wanna be cowboy...well, we’ll get there. Finally, I’ll share a news update that, sadly, begins with the death of a beloved trans-rights advocate but fortunately ends with youth being empowered in their right to protest.

    Mentioned in this podcast:

    • A Matter of Faith
    • The Truth about Suicide and Guns
    • How to Support Survivors and People Impacted by Gun Violence

    So, if you've been paying attention in the news...everything is on fire. In some cases, literally. And that can be really hard, especially for those who suffer from PTSD. And guns complicate that even more. But, what can you do if you're worried about yourself, or those you love? Don't panic, Brady's got you. JJ is joined by Dr. Kyleanne Hunter and Dr. Ted Bonar to talk about PTSD, depression, and how suicide is never the answer.

    JJ is joined by everybody's favorite co-host, JP, and everybody's favorite leader, Brady President Kris Brown. Together, we're here to talk about all that Brady did this year--and what we resolve to have happen in 2020. After that, I’m going to drop some truth in our “unbelievable, but” section--namely, that this holiday season winds down, you should resolve to practice and discuss safe gun storage. Finally, we’re leaving 2019 with one last news wrap-up that covers everything from increased shootings to increased  funding. 2019 has been...a lot, but we’re here together to make 2020 safer.

  • 34: Here's to Moving the Line

    JJ is joined by now frequent guest, Dr. Kyleanne Hunter, and dear friend Dr. Joe Sakran. Joe is a trauma surgeon, survivor, gun violence prevention activist, and founder of the hashtag “this is our lane.” We’re breaking down not only Joe’s journey to becoming a doctor and an activist, but also what “this is our lane” is about, and the role health care professionals play in helping to end the epidemic of gun violence in the US. Per Joe and Ky’s request, we’re having this hard conversation with some hard liquor--in other words, we’re sipping whiskey and spilling facts. Then, in our  “Unbelievable, But!” segment, I’ll tell you why Santa probably won’t put you on the “nice” list if you show up to a photo op with him while you’re packing heat. Finally, we’re wrapping up with a brief gvp news review, where I’m covering everything from mass shootings, to political debates, to bad radio hosts.

  • 33: Giving Gun Owners Their Seat at the Table

    How do we get more gun owners involved in the fight against gun violence? What is the gun violence prevention movement doing wrong? To answer those questions, gun novice JJ is joined by two great gun owners: Kyleanne Hunter, VP of Programs at Brady, Marine veteran, and corgi owner; and Mark House, a New York city public school Principal and father. Together, they're trying to find a way for everyone to be included in the conversation on how to end gun violence.

    Then, JJ dips into some unbelievable news--namely, why guns don't belong in schools--and the gun violence prevention wrap-ups move from Fridays to Mondays! What?! I know, I know, we're getting crazy around here.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    ...about the culture of gun ownership;
    ...why safe storage matters;
    ...what it's like dealing with the "new normal" of school shootings;
    ...how some gun owners respond to "common sense" gun laws;
    ...what it's like, being a gun owner who is involved with efforts to reduce and prevent gun violence;
    and, what the gun violence movement is doing wrong.
