  • #15 Effective Decision Making- Improve the outcome of your choices

We make so many decisions each day, and it can become overwhelming. We know our decisions affect our life, so we want to make good ones, and sometimes we procrastinate in order to avoid them. Sometimes we are rushed to make choices, and it can create stress we don't need. In fact, I have the formula to help minimize negative backlash from making haste decisions.

In today's talk, I encourage you to try something I've learned in my everyday decision-making, that helps me get the result I want. Live with regret less. This has changed how I approach decision-making so much, I want to share it with you. I hope it helps you have less stress this year, because there is enough of that, right?

Happy Healthy New Year! 2020 was tough, and 2021 will have challenges too, but I encourage you to focus on what good things also came from 2020 and choose joy no matter what 2021 brings.

Remember to include yourself in the care you give by taking this practical approach to making decisions.

  • #13 Accusers and Troublemakers - What To do When Someone Makes Accusations

Hi, this podcast is designed to give you a quick strategy for dealing with moments of being blamed or accused. Guilty or not guilty, it's a great approach to handling this sort of situation. Getting all the facts and questioning the source helps you determine the validity of a claim or accusation. There is always more than one side to a story and a multitude of angles from which to see things. If you aren't willing to seek information before adopting a belief, you could be harming someone and unknowingly bringing negativity into your life. How do you respond to being accused? It's natural to defend ourselves, but before you waste time doing so, allow whoever is blaming you to explain why they believe it. Once they tell you how they came to believe it, you assess things further. Avoid defending outrageous accusations or untrue statements, because you feel hurt. People who care about you will ask questions and seek understanding. Save your energy for more important things like your self-care! Thanks so much for listening

  • #12 Difficult People - How to approach and avoid stress

Let's face it. Caregiving is challenging enough without the added stress of difficult people. Sometimes we view people as difficult because we fail to understand their behavior. Why are they acting in a way that goes against what is good for them? Maybe they have a good reason for taking their position, and the only way you can learn is to ask questions.  Dealing with difficult people creates stress that will take a toll on you. Thank you for listening, and remember to include yourself in the care you give by avoiding drama from other difficult people. Check out my webpage for more resources and encouragement!

  • #11 House Call Comeback- Telehealth during Covid

This episode is to bring good news about the benefits of utilizing telehealth for your health care needs. I avoided an important appointment with my healthcare provider due to my skepticism of using video to replace an actual office. I'm here to tell you it was an awesome experience. It goes to show how being open-minded to new technology can create unexpected benefits for everyone, especially caregivers. In this show, I share a few benefits that appealed to me the most. It's easy to use, is efficient, and a huge time saver. Plus, I left my appointment feeling validated and excited about this new approach to healthcare as I stayed safe in my home, away from germs. If this service was available to me, as a caregiver to my mother, it would have been a game-changer. For more information about using telehealth and telemedicine, check out. Related Links:

  • #10 Approaching Caregiving - First Steps are Key

Caregivers often jump into their role before knowing what they're getting into. So many people make this mistake, and it's avoidable in most circumstances. Even if you are suddenly faced with becoming a caregiver due to a sudden injury or illness, setting some time aside at first will save you heartache.

Decisions made during high emotional states, without reasoning, usually end in regret or pain. By taking time to investigate what a person's current and future care needs are, you can minimize stress and create an overall better experience. By asking a few more questions early on you will gain confidence and caregiving will seem less intimating.

I became my mom's caregiver immediately after she developed disabling dementia at age 59. Nobody can know what it's like to be in that sort of situation until they face it themselves. I've learned so much over my care journey. You can learn from what I experienced.

I have been through the entire caregiving journey, and now I look back and can attest to how rash decision-making, made things worse for us. You can build a platform to move forward, especially if life's rug has been pulled out from under you at the start. Having a solid start with planning and preparing pays off in many ways.

I would love to hear from you! Tell me about your caregiving beginning.

Always remember to include yourself in the care you give and that should start in the beginning.

    Always Caring, Sam

  • The Energy Trap
Everyone is affected by what is in the news, because it projects strong negative energy is powerful. It has a powerfull. We are made up of energy and we should be constantly on look out for how what we focus on affects us energetically. Once you understand how energy works, you can see why it's important to have a balance of negative and positive. They are both needed to create a strong consistent surge of power. The energy to create change happens with balance and intention. Focusing on too much negative information on social media and the news will lead you to be overly charged and become stressed or burned out. Limit your exposure to a few minutes of the news. Just enough to keep up to date will allow you to maintain a healthier lifestyle. Burnout is already a real possibility for most caregivers, so don't add more fuel to your fire. Stay calm, focus on what good can come from all this stuff happening today. I realize it's hard to see the good, but we all know things settle down eventually. It's up to each of us to be responsible for our energy and, as a caregiver, we directly affect people in our care. If you care for someone who watches negative news all day long, you can explain to them how it affects the home. Have them listen to this podcast. Bring some positivity in the form of favorite music, or comedy show. Almost anything is better than watching the news, except for crime t.v. Encourage them to take brakes. Stress directly affects your health and is proven to worsen pain. If they won't turn the news off, you can put in earplugs to hear an upbeat podcast or music yourself. Remember, you can't force people to change, but you can influence them by your action. This is a form of self-care and you should protect yourself from caregiver burnout. You are doing a great job and I appreciate you listening to my podcast today. Remember to always include yourself in the care you give. That includes keeping your energy well-balanced and positively charged so you can keep performing well. Website is www.samdamm.com. Pre-order the Redefining Caregiving Book today. Learn a better way to survive and thrive as a caregiver. Thanks for listening!

  • #9 Protect Your Brain - The cost of ongoing fear, sadness and suffering

Did you know being uncomfortable affects your brain health? The health of your mind is just as important as your physical health. Did you know by being in a state of feeling constantly uncomfortable from constant fear, worry, sadness, stress, and suffering can damage your brain? I share my mom's story because she led a life of worry and had a very co-dependent personality. She obsessed about things and over time, it took its toll. I'm not blaming my mom, but simply want to share how these habits destroyed her mind in the end. She experienced some serious trauma in her life, and that led her to this type of thinking, but she did not seek help. She failed to see the importance of keeping her mind healthy, as well as her body. I hope her story is a warning for others to avoid damage for them.

  • Care Enough to Wear a Mask
We should be responsible with our freedom to enter society at this time. Why would you go against several experts opinions about protecting yourself from anything that is life threatening? That's what millions of people are doing. There are laws to protect people from dying such as wearing seatbelts and many others. Many believe that these types of laws are infringing upon our freedom. Where do we draw the line in what is considered our rights to have freedoms to do whatever we want and whether those freedoms we choose affect others in a negative way or are threatening to others. There are extremes in opinions, but we should have healthy balance in our approach to decisions. The selfish approach isn't good and neither is the idea of all inclusiveness in many cases. These are extreme thinking that usually isnt based on fairness or kindness. Common sense and consideration to the people in this world and our planet, is the best way toward balanced thinking. I realize this Podcast may not be for everyone but I hope if you're listening you'll understand my message comes from a place of love for everyone. We need our freedom and I know many of them have been taken away from us, but that happened because people allowed it. Now some are so upset about our loss of freedoms they are expressing their frustration irrationally. They fight for their freedoms hyper-aggressively within consideration to the damage they could cause. They become part of the problem because they cause harm to people in our society. Today this is being displayed by angry people, who aren't listening to anyone, and entering our communities without masks, or practicing safe distancing. They don't trust anyone so they listen to no one. They don't even listen to common sense. In order to keep our freedoms we need to show that we are responsible citizens. Just like a child grows up and demonstrates making wise choices so parents can trust they are responsible and earn the rights to have freedoms. The answer to protecting our freedom in America is to be responsible with our freedom. These are freedoms that someone else fought and gave their lives for. They are definitely worth fighting for but there should be a better strategy than lashing out in anger and protests that hurt other people. This is like a kid throwing a tantrum noone wants to watch, and the answer isn't to give that kid whatever they're throwing a tantrum for. I'm all for standing up for our rights respectfully. When it's done in a way that is responsible and considers others welfare. During this time of temporary freedom to enter society, I pray people will use common sense and wear a mask to protect the vulnerable and our society. Our elderly are the most vulnerable and most neglected and it's time we demonstrate a little more compassion to those who raised us and brought us into this world so we can have freedoms.
