From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory

Underdog’s Playbook Title
Welcome
We are in the 2nd week of our message series – The Underdog’s Playbook.
Last week we talked about being stuck in the shadows and the strategy of stepping out.
Today I want to talk to you about going From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory.
I was a young teenager who went to Church. I noticed they needed help…
I came early to set up their sound equipment, set up chairs, and clean the space.I started to help lead worship by singing.I learned piano, because they needed help.I gave rides in my car to anyone who wanted to come to Church.I started small groups to help minister to young adults.I started preaching to help the church.I did small things that would help. Those small humble things became BIG THINGS in my life.
Some of my best friendships were formed while helping out.
Some of my greatest victories and miracles occurred while serving.
Sometimes, the path to our greatest victories doesn’t start with power or status—but simple, humble service.
Do you have a humble story like this?
Can you point to something small and humble and say… “I am so glad I did that. That was a BIG DEAL for me.”
We live in a culture that glorifies status, not service.
We celebrate CEOs, not interns. We celebrate champions, not the trainers behind the scenes. We celebrate influencers with millions of followers, not the ones making a difference in the background. And the message we hear over and over is: -“Crush the competition.” → Instead of helping others, dominate them.
-“Make a name for yourself.” → Success is all about self-promotion.
-“If you want something done right, do it yourself.” → Don’t rely on others—just take control.
-“Look out for number one.” → Prioritize yourself over everyone else.
-“Fake it till you make it.” → Appear successful, even if you’re not actually growing.
-“Nice guys finish last.” → Being kind or serving others will hold you back.
-“No one is going to give it to you—take it.” → Forget humility; force your way to the top.
The key to greatness isn’t getting noticed, but being faithful? The key to winning isn’t pushing ahead but stepping back to help one another? The key to victory isn’t strength, but meekness? This is what God’s kingdom is all about.
And David’s story shows us exactly how this works.
We know that David arrives at the valley of Elah. …ends up facing and defeating a giant named Goliath, but how did he get there?
Do you know? Many people know about the fight, but few know why David arrived at the fight.
In 1 Samuel 17:17, David’s father Jesse sends him on an errand.
He had a picnic basket… is that your picture of a warrior?
He was the earliest example of uber eats, or door dash.
He was serving his dad and older brothers… is that your picture of a king?
David’s journey to the battlefield didn’t start with a sword—it started with a sandwich.
David wasn’t asked to fight. He was asked to serve.
He wasn’t sent to be a warrior. He wasn’t sent to make history. He was sent to deliver food. (Uber Eats)Through Service, David became a Champion.
This is counter intuitive.
The servant seems like the underdog.
The champion is surely the one being served…
Because David was faithful in serving, he ended up in the right place at the right time….
And that’s when he saw Goliath, and went out to defeat him.
We would not know sword wielding David, if there was never a sandwich delivering David.
1. Show Up to Serve, Not to Be Seen
David wasn’t looking for a spotlight—he was running an errand.True champions don’t chase recognition—they choose faithfulness.David’s story is incredible—but he’s not the ultimate example of this.
Jesus didn’t come demanding power. He came serving.
(Matthew 23:11, NIV)
And then He proved it.
(Mark 10:45, NIV)
Jesus didn’t fight for a throne—He washed feet.Jesus didn’t take up a sword—He took up a cross.Jesus didn’t defeat Rome—He defeated death.Jesus’ life was not about receiving, but giving! And in the end… His humility brought about a victory that changed the world.
2. Be Faithful in the Small Things
The Small Things are Bigger than you think.Faithfulness to small tasks builds trust.Unfaithfulness to small tasks destroys trust.(Luke 16:10 NIV)If you’re too big to serve, you’re too small to lead.-Instead of looking for a bigger opportunity, start being faithful in the smaller ones.
People who serve are valuable.
People who are faithful are valuable.
-they receive PROMOTION!
3. Trust God to Turn Your Service Into Strength
God uses service to prepare you for something greater.(James 4:10, NIV)Stop worrying about the outcome—serve with excellence and trust God with the results.
We serve a God who notices our small acts of faith.
4. Meekness is NOT Weakness
What is meekness? The majority answer – weakness.
Meekness – Strength under control
Jackhammer example – crushing power.
Control the power to do something precise.
David was not weak… but he was meek.
Jesus was not weak… but meek.
God’s plan is that you would be STRONG & POWERFUL but that you would control your strength and power.
Ever see power out of control? Bad! Abuse!
The strategy is not to crush others, but bless others.
The strategy is carry provision, and slay giants along the way.
From Serving to Slaying: Your Unseen Path to Victory
Waiting for a big moment.Waiting for the huge opportunity.Waiting for the big break.Waiting for someone to notice you.But what if your big moment starts with small service?
David didn’t wait for a battle. He served.
Jesus didn’t wait for recognition. He served.

If we served without needing to be noticed. If we stepped into small acts of obedience, trusting God with the results. If we let humility, not ambition, lead us to our greatest victories.David showed up with a sandwich… and left with a victory.
Jesus picked up a towel… and changed the world.
What might God do through your faithfulness today?
Don’t wait for a bigger opportunity. Be faithful now.
Find 1 small way to serve. Step up. Step in. Start now. (Next Steps)2. Serve With No Strings Attached
David wasn’t looking for a reward—he was just serving his brothers.
Jesus wasn’t serving to get something—He was serving to give.
