Rena Effendi is an Azerbaijani photographer and documentary filmmaker, known for her work exploring social and environmental themes, often focusing on marginalized communities and the challenges of modernization. Born in 1977 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Effendi began her photographic career in the early 2000s, documenting her country’s transition from the Soviet era to a new phase of economic development and political conflicts. Her work is distinguished by its ability to reveal the human side of complex situations, creating a deep connection between the subjects of her photographs and the audience, encouraging reflection on contemporary social and environmental issues.
We met Rena Effendi during the Ethical Photography Festival in Lodi, and the following interview was kindly conducted by Giulia Marirossi from Fujifilm Italy.
