Apple has just released their first series of custom silicon Macs — the lowest end, lowest power ones, I’m talking fanless MacBook Air, 2-port MacBook Pro, and silver Mac mini.
A lot of people have been blown away by the ludicrous mode performance, responsiveness, efficiency, and for the MacBooks specifically, battery life. Like, beating most of Apple’s other machines, never mind most of the machines in the industry. On ultra-low power.
Others have been legitimately critical or concerned about compatibility, expandability, and customizability as Apple focuses less on traditional computers and increasingly on computing appliances.
Some, though… some have just gone full-on scalding hot take. Forget habanero or scotch Bonet or ghost pepper, just all-new levels of Last Dab spicy.
And, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at some of those, in real-time, and give you my live reactions to them. Right here. Right now.

Apple has just unleashed the new M1 powered MacBook Air — no Intel, no fan, no new design, but pretty much no competition now when it comes to ultralight laptops. But Apple also recently relaunched the iPad Air, fully redesigned with an A14 chipset, and it’s once again redefining what it means to be an ultralight tablet.
And I’m just getting a ton of questions from people who want to get… something they can… work casual with, easily carry around, use anywhere, but are now conflicted about which one to get.
Well, I’m about to break it all down for you. Right now.

I’ve been switching between these three new Apple Silicon M1 machines for about 3 days now, so this is all super preliminary and super… ficial. But if you’re trying to make a decision now, now, now, I’m going to give you my first impressions, and I’ll throw a bunch of shots up on screen while I’m doing it for all you geeky and graphics benchers and deep in the workflow trenchers out there.
And keep in mind while I’m saying all this, M1 is the first, and therefore worst Mac silicon Apple is ever going to ship. It’s analog to Intel’s Y-series. Designed for ultra-low power systems, prioritizing efficiency as in battery life, the performance is not really but kinda incidental, and there will be more powerful chips both for the bigger Mac systems this generation, and future generations beyond this first set of chips to come. So, keep this as a baseline in the back of your minds. You know, because they’re about to be blown.
So let’s compare the 8GB M1 MacBook Air to the 16GB Intel 10th Gen Y-series MacBook Air, the 16GB 2-port M1 MacBook Pro to the 16GB 4-port Intel 10th Gen U-Series MacBook Pro — yes, it’s a higher end system, but it’s all I had handy — and the 8GB M1 Mac mini to the 8GB Intel 8th Gen U-Series Mac mini.
All of these Mac max out at 16GB of LPDDR4X RAM, but so do the systems they’re replacing, and Apple is good enough with memory compression, ultra-fast swap, and other mitigations, that for these types of ultra low power, entry-level systems, it’s just a non-issue.
Also, the Intel Macs all have Apple T2 co-processors, which are basically A10 chipsets, which will help out for things like H.264/265 encode and decode, so for some tests it’s not even a fair fight.
Still... the results are suprising!

Apple silicon is finally here and it's called M1. The first chipset looks like an A14, if you added a couple extra Firestorm CPU cores and 3 or 4 extra GPU cores, and some specific Mac tuning and IP like hypervisor acceleration and Thunderbolt controllers. So, basically an A14X for the lightest of Macs — the new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini.
I turned on Apple's event, hit record on the camera, and here are my live reactions and thoughts on the M1 architecture and potential from the November 2020 One More Thing Event!

The new Mac mini loses a couple of Thunderbolt 3 ports and its maximum RAM has been reduced to 16 GB, but inside is no longer Intel — now it's an Apple Silicon M1, and it promises to take Apple's entry-level desktop Mac from mini to mighty.
