Dear Friends of Dialogue:
Synoptic Introduction
One thing seems certain, in these uncertain of times. It is that we shouldn’t let this perfect, curative crisis of civilization, go to waste. Every cloud has a silver lining.
Living in denial doesn’t help in the least. Today’s present danger, of a slow prolonged death, or else, a quick sudden extinction, is real, hardly in need of further insistence. We need to take ownership of our destiny, for things don’t just happen of their own accord, rather, we make things occur.
The quest, rather, is, if our world is broken, how then, do we make it whole again? The first prompt that comes to my mind, is, how did it get broken, in the first place?
Well, before talking about fixing Washington and the World, perhaps, we should start by asking a more fundamental question. How do parts constitute a whole, that is, what makes up the whole? A good place to start is with the definition of the concept.
That is, since we’re talking about broken things, and, about making things whole again, that must mean that we already know what makes up a whole. Right? Well, let’s see if we really know what makes up a whole.
Yes, we’re used to saying that parts make up a whole, but, allow me to rephrase it, what makes up the whole? If you reply that parts make up the whole, then I inquire, what exactly is this make-up? Because, until and unless we address this underlying issue, we’re just overlooking it, not really answering it. It seems like we’re answering, but in reality, it’s an oversight, not an insight, into the nature of the cardinal problem facing us.
For too long we have been taking for granted the obvious, that parts make up the whole, without as much as requesting an account of exactly, how so, is it that the parts make up the whole? The only answer one gets is that parts make up the whole, because the whole is made up of parts. But, this is only a repetition in reverse order, not really answering the question asked.
I truly believe that the devil is in the details, that evil hides where we least expect it. My claim is simply that our world is broken because we don’t know how to make it whole, to begin with. That is, we never defined whole in terms of its parts. Proof of this is that the more we try to fix things, the worse things get. That’s because we don’t really know what we’re doing.
Let me try to explain it with apples. Leadership is clueless, degrading knowledge to a matter of opinion. There seems to be no criterion for making sense, it’s all up to whom you ask.
The usual argument between two persons regarding a whole issue goes as follows: on the one hand, this, and, on the other hand, that. Granted that the whole question is made up of two contrasting parts, but, how do these parts, besides being parts, make up the whole? Surely, the solution isn’t coming up with a one-armed guy.
No. Rather, it’s more like on the right shoulder of one of the persons, this, and on the left shoulder of the other person, that; and, standing on the shoulders of both persons, is the solution.
