  • September 30 2021 - Have the Canucks made a Hughes and Pettersson deal?
Rink Wide started off with a bang as news of 40 & 43 started to come in fast and furious. Andrew Wadden and Jeff Paterson went full out with their thoughts and takes on the two cornerstone players hopefully making their way back to Vancouver in the very near future.
Patrick Johnston joined the show to break down the numbers that we are hearing for 40 & 43. Says they can’t hit the ice with the d-core they have now. They have to do a lot of work, still, to make things happen. They are on a very fine edge to make things work. Talked about Brock Boeser not being at practice today. Thinks signs yesterday, about working with the 4th line could point to something but let’s talk next week and see if this is still a thing. Probably not the end of the world if he isn’t skating at one particular moment.
The guys came of the call with PJ continuing the Brock Boeser discussion but all roads lead back to Petey and Hughes. JPat talked about the goalie tandem.

  • September 29 2021 - Canucks back on the ice at Rogers Arena
Rink Wide kicked off on a somber note with Andrew Wadden and Jeff Paterson giving their thoughts on the hammering coming down at Sportsnet 650 to some close friends and colleagues.
Pivoting from that, the guys moved into the lack of cuts from the Canucks. No surprise that practice today was very meaty.
Daniel Wagner of VIA joined the show and started off chatting about Jack Rathbone. Says he has the potential to be a true difference maker. Thinks that this isn’t a battle for 3rd pairing LD. Talked about how interesting it is that he can handle his own with a very good group of NHL pros. Talked about Quinn Hughes. Talked about the trouble this team is in with their defensive depth. We knew two months ago that this was going to be a problem. Daniel thinks that waivers might be the best way to go if somehow the right player finds his way there. Talked about Podkolzin, who doesn’t quite know what he can and can’t do in the NHL yet.
The guys moved on to chat out Phil Di Giuseppe and his chances of making the team. They heard from guys like PdG and his coach, Travis Green. We heard from Brad Hunt who shows great energy. JPat wants to take him to Subway.

Harman Dayal, of the Athletic, joined Wadden and JPat and started off talking about a few of the top performers of the preseason and camp so far. He named guys like Lockwood and Di Giuseppe. He talked about Jack Rathbone and what he has done so far. He has shown great work that will earn the coaches trust. Said he exuded Troy Stecher vibes by being a small guy, showing a lot of battle. Harm talked about how line combos could look, now and when Pettersson comes back. Talked about Chiasson and if sees a role for him on this teams. It’s a tough one because Harm believes that he is a PP specialist. Harm talked about the risers and fallers at camp. He thinks Di Giuseppe has shown that he is a head above of others who are vying for a spot.
The guys came off the chat with Harm and went to the locker room and heard from guys like Jonah Gadjovich. Jeff talked about who will fill a void on the PK. We even snuck in an AskJPat and he talks about if he thinks they Canucks may be forced to move on from one of 40 or 43.

  • September 24 2021 - Canucks Training Camp Day 2
Week one of Rink Wide is in the books and it lines up with Day 2 of Canucks training camp. Andrew Wadden and Jeff Paterson go through the day to talk about what Jeff saw out in Abbotsford.Patrick Johnston of Post Media joined Wadden and JPat and he started off talking Klimovich. Sticking with the Russian speaking players there, PJ talked about the comprehension the players have of the English language. You can tell that Podkolzin has a good understanding of the language and that he put work in the offseason. He talks about where Podkolzin is in his development and that there is a difference between an NHL player and an NHL star. It’s not a surprise that he is fitting in after playing two seasons in the 2nd best league in the world, PJ tells the guys. Patrick went into what he thought of Olli Juolevi and his performance and how disappointing it is so far. Questions if we could actually see him start on the NHL roster. Talked about how many games we could see Juolevi actually play this year. PJ addressed the curious case of the whereabouts of Travis Hamonic. From one player not here, to another, the guys talk about when we might see Brandon Sutter back. Talked about Chiasson and if the PTO he signed could lead to a spot on the roster. Andrew and Jeff finished off the show by breaking down how Pettersson and Hughes contracts could be divided between what the Canucks have left in their salary cap.
