8.29.2022 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Jim Crow voting law upheld; Black Duke volleyball player called n-word; Tabitha Brown fires back

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is upholding a voting law it knows is steeped in racism.
It's an1890 Jim Crow law that white supremacist state leaders designed to disenfranchise Black voters. I'll be talking to one of the lawyers from the Mississippi Center for Justice who is fighting to change it. 

The only black Duke University volleyball player was called racial slurs during a match against Bringham Young University. Her father will be joining me tonight to discuss how both schools responded and how his daughter is handling the situation. BYU said Sunday that 

Internet sensation Tabitha Brown says take her as she is or don't take her at all. We'll be talking about code-switching and how some entertainment leaders want us to tone down who we are to make others comfortable. 

And September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. We will be talking to the Senior Advisor of Black Women's Health Imperative about  Pfizer's $5.4 billion investment in one of the more promising drugs to treat the disease.

An Alabama Pastor arrested while watering a neighbor's flowers has filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Childersburg Police Department. Michael Jennings and one of his attorneys are here tonight. 

Attorneys for a black Texas man say a Beaumont police officer body-slammed his client head-first on the concrete floor, leaving him paralyzed. The attorney for Christopher Shaw will join me tonight to discuss this tragic case. 

Ya'll remember that Black Mississippi FedEx driver who got shot at by a white man while trying to deliver a package? Well, now he's getting death threats, and the men charged in the shooting have yet to be prosecuted.  

The DOJ releases the redacted version of the Mar-a-Lago search warrant affidavit today. National Security and Foreign Policy Expert Dr. Nola Haynes will explain what's in the document and why there was probable cause for the search. 

We'll introduce to you the youngest female private pilot license holder. Talk about Black Girl magic. 

In our Education Matters segment, we'll talk to one researcher who breaks down the numbers and explains if we really have a teacher shortage across the US.

Since the pandemic and the recession's end, Black women and men are seeing significant increases in employment and labor force participation. I talked with Joelle Gamble, Chief Economist from the U.S. Department of Labor, about the latest report from the Council of Economic Advisers on the pandemic shifts in black employment and wages.  

Los Angeles County will be paying out millions to Kobe Bryant's widow. A jury agreed that she and another family will continue to suffer severe emotional distress because sheriff deputies took photos of their loved ones after the 2020 crash that Kobe, his daughter, and seven other people with their cell phones.  

Black doctors are being fired from hospitals and schools at an alarming rate. I'll talk to two doctors who want to bring awareness with a call to action.

We have a Roland Martin Unfiltered exclusive. A Black South Carolina woman gets threatened by two white men as she's cutting her grass. It's all on video, but the cops did nothing! 
She'll explain what happened in her first interview since the incident happened.

The state of Louisiana is delaying the transfer of juveniles to the Angola prison campus on September 15th. But what is going to happen on the 16th? One of the attorneys who filed the lawsuit to stop the transfer will be here to let us know.

8.23.2022 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Fla. State Atty Suspended, Breonna Taylor Cop Pleads Guilty, GA Cops Charges Dropped

One of the officers connected to the death of Breonna Taylor pleaded guilty today in federal court for lying on the affidavit for the March 2020 search of Breonna's apartment.

Two white Georgia officers will not be charged in the June 2020 death of black motorist Rayshard Brooks. The special prosecutor appointed to the case says the officers did nothing wrong. 

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspends state Attorney Andrew Warren claiming Warren refused to enforce the state laws. Andrew Warren is here to discuss the suspension and his lawsuit to get his job back.

The woman appointed by DeSantis to replace Warren reverses a policy that disproportionately targets Black cyclists. I'll talk to the NAACP President of Hillsborough County Florida Branch about biking while black. 

A Florida family is remembering their brother on his 37th birthday today. They say he'd be here to celebrate if officers knew how to handle his mental health crisis. Tonight, we'll talk about the tragic case of Samuel Celestin.

We'll also talk to a counselor who can shed some light on what needs to be done to keep those in a mental health crisis alive when police get involved.
