In this episode we’ll be talking about the categories that can be found within the gay community.
Why are we discussing this and why is this interesting for everyone?
If you’re a woman and you think the patriarchy only affects you, think again. Within the gay community, you’d assume there wouldn’t be issues of gender-like discrimination because… they all have penises. So, like, problem solved- right? Instead we find the unwieldy construction of a quasi-female category.
Why, you ask. Good question.
To create a power dynamic. There is a fixation on hyper-masculinity on dating apps but also within the real world and apparently having a penis isn’t enough to run away from patriarchal issues.
Why, you ask again.
Well, damn. What a question. We’ll attempt to answer it as best as we can but to give you a taster:
Think internalised homophobia, a fixation on masculinity, the innate human need to have more values than others, and so on.
But bottom line, the labels are a big issue.

It’s no secret that many gay men work out frequently and watch their weight carefully. Why is that? Where does that pressure derive from?
Does it stem from an over-sexualisation of the body? In other words, is it because the body is seen as something to be consumed, rather than being the vessel of a human being with a heart?
In this episode, Jeevan (@lgbt.abdnaware) and I discuss where the obsession with the gym and that perfect, ripped body comes from.
You’ll hear him arguing really fascinating points, such as the “lean physique” being a means to escape from discrimination - because who’s going to disrespect you if you’re big and bulky, right?
We’ll briefly be touching on the ideas of the feminine and masculine archetype. However, the episode after this one will dive into that subject matter deeper (categorisation of gay men, how the patriarchy plays into gay culture).

July 08, 2021 On Racism in the LGBTQ+ Community
The LGBTQ+ community claims to celebrate diversity, individuality, and sexuality.

Why is it that racism isn't addressed?

Particularly on dating apps, racism is frequently justified as “it’s just my preference”. No. Whether you prefer your cocktail on the sweet or sour, stronger or weaker side is a preference. Making preemptive decisions on a person based on their ethnicity is not a preference- it’s racism.

What flabbergasts me is how in a community that claims to be tolerant of all, and where most people have experienced oppression or discriminated first hand, racism is deemed socially acceptable.

Perhaps it is important here to state the obvious: Having been a victim of bigotry does not make you immune against being a bigot yourself.
