  • Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Wisdom (Sophia) - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.
Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtue of wisdom (sophia).
According to Aristotle, wisdom is a composite or integration of two other intellectual virtues - nous (intelligence, intellect), which supplies a grasp of the first principles; and episteme (science, knowledge), which reasons using those first principles to provide a coherent body of knowledge.
He also maintains that wisdom in this sense is distinct from and superior to practical wisdom (phronesis) - the former has to do with higher things, matters that do not change or whose principles do not change, while the latter bears upon the human world of contingent affairs and actions.

  • Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Intellect (Nous) - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.
Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtue of Nous, a term translated in a variety of ways - Intellect, Intelligence, Understanding, or Intuition being some of the more common.
Nous, according to the anthropology/psychology of knowledge outlined in book 6, involves the grasp of first principles that other intellectual virtues/modes of knowing then focus upon. Aristotle connects Nous particularly with scientific knowledge (episteme), and maintains that both of them are integrated in wisdom (sophia).

  • Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Scientific Knowledge (Epistēmē) - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.
Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtue of scientific or disciplinary knowledge (episteme)
Scientific knowledge, according to Aristotle, bears upon matters whose principles do not change, or which are "from necessity". It works rationally from principles or starting points (archai), but does not supply those principles themselves. It also has to do with universals.

  • Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Intellectual Virtues And Parts Of The Soul
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.
Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtues and the parts of the human soul in book 6.
Aristotle distinguishes between two higher, intellectual or rational parts of the soul, one concerned with theoretical matters, which are from necessity and whose principles do not change, and the other with practical matters, which have to do with action and production.
Three of the intellectual virtues - scientific knowledge (episteme), intellect or intuition (nous), and wisdom (sophia) - are habits that perfect the highest part of the soul in human beings. Two other intellectual virtues - practical wisdom (phronesis) and art or skill (techne) - perfect the second-highest, practical part of the soul.

  • Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics Book 6 - Truth In Theory And Action - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics.
Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his distinction between truth in theory (or in contemplation, i.e. bearing upon theoretical or speculative matters) and truth in practice (or action, i.e. bearing upon practical or productive matters).
In theoretical matters, truth has to do primarily with the correspondence between what is or is not the case, on one side, and thought in the mind (or linguistic expressions).
Truth in practical matters is somewhat more complex, since it involves not only what is the case in the intellect, but also the desire or affectivity of the person (and intellect and desire come together in prohairesis, or the faculty of choice). It also involves desire and aversion on the part of the person.

  • Martin Heidegger, Plato's Doctrine Of Truth - The History Of Metaphysics - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses the 20th century philosopher, Martin Heidegger, and focuses on his essay "Plato's Doctrine of Truth" found in the book, Pathmarks
Heidegger views Plato's shift in the understanding of the essence of truth - from unhiddenness to correctness - as setting western thought on the path of metaphysics and humanism.
He also briefly discusses how Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Rene Descartes, and Friedrich Nietzsche figure into this history of western metaphysics, further developing additional conceptions of truth that remain within the trajectory originally established by Plato.

  • Martin Heidegger, Platos Doctrine Of Truth - Education And Truth - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses the 20th century philosopher, Martin Heidegger, and focuses on his essay "Plato's Doctrine of Truth" found in the book, Pathmarks
Here we examine what Heidegger takes the Allegory of the Cave - found in book 7 of Plato's Republic - to be about.
Plato construes the allegory as a teaching about the nature or essence of education (paideia), but Heidegger stresses that the allegory also represents a very important turning point in human conceptions about the essence of truth (aletheia).

  • Martin Heidegger, Platos Doctrine Of Truth - Four Dwelling Places In The Allegory
This lecture discusses the 20th century philosopher, Martin Heidegger, and focuses on his essay "Plato's Doctrine of Truth" found in the book, Pathmarks
Here we examine the four "dwelling places" Heidegger identifies in the Allegory of the Cave - found in book 7 of Plato's Republic.
Each of the different dwelling places involves a different attitude towards truth or "unhiddness" (aletheia) in Heidegger's interpretation. The allegory charts the movement from one dwelling place to the next, and thereby from one conception of truth to another.
