Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Plato's work, The Phaedo, which is a dialogue taking place between Socrates and his friends on the day of his execution.

Specifically it examines Socrates' discussion of the nature of the virtues of temperance and courage. He takes these virtues to be genuine only in the case of the philosopher, who have the right motivations and for whom these virtues are structured by wisdom

This lecture discusses key ideas from the Medieval philosopher, theologian, and Benedictine monk Anselm of Canterbury's dialogue, On Truth (the first work in a trilogy including On Freedom of Choice and On The Fall of the Devil)

It focuses specifically on his discussion of justice in the will as truth or rectitude. The specifically moral conception of justice that deserves praise or blame is a matter of willing what one ought, because one ought, and in order to maintain that very rectitude, which allows Anselm to define justice in the will as "rectitude of will maintained for its own sake".

This lecture discusses key ideas from the Medieval philosopher, theologian, and Benedictine monk Anselm of Canterbury's dialogue, On Truth (the first work in a trilogy including On Freedom of Choice and On The Fall of the Devil)

It focuses specifically on his discussion in chapter 6 of truth and falsity "in the exterior senses". Anselm's view is that in cases when we might say that the senses are deceiving us, it is really the judgement (opinio) of the mind that is deceiving us.

It focuses specifically on truth and falsity as they exist in the will and in action. This involves a normativity built into and evaluating both of them, a "what one ought to do" or a "what it was made for".
