Saints Unscripted

Under the Banner of Heaven, a miniseries on Hulu based on the book by John Krakauer, was released this last weekend. We watched the first two episodes on the day of the release and, as active and practicing members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church), we filmed our reactions! We talk about what we liked, what we had questions about, and where we felt the first few episodes had incorrectly depicted the true LDS experience (from our experience).

Today on Hulu, a miniseries called Under the Banner of Heaven was released. This series focuses on the Lafferty murders that occurred in 1984. The Lafferty brothers who committed the murders were raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For today's episode, we had the incredible opportunity to talk with the sergeant during the Lafferty case, Mike Pientka. Mike was in direct contact with Dan Lafferty almost every single day for a year. He talks about Dan's character, his change in demeanor, and the overall experience being close with a murderer. If you’re familiar with “Mormon TikTok” (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is often referred to as the Mormon Church, though it is not the correct term), you’ve probably heard of Emmademmadoo_, as she’s been a very active pro-faith TikToker. TikTok has been growing rapidly and has been a social media platform for many opinions about the LDS Church, both positive and negative. Emma has decided to share her voice on TikTok despite all the negative voices.

We are finally hearing the conversion story of one of the incredible hosts for Saints Unscripted, Kaitlyn Fotheringham! Kaitlyn has been a part of Saints Unscripted for some time and has such an incredible testimony of Jesus Christ. In this episode, she shares the story of her conversion in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). She talks about moving to Utah, experiencing the new culture, and finding her own testimony. She talks about her decision to serve a mission and how, because of her decision, she has seen many miracles. You don't want to miss this episode!! Today on Saints Unscripted, we get to talk to Daniel Smith, religious scholar and Jesus guru. Daniel shared some powerful thoughts about Holy Week and Passover, two of the most important subjects in the life of Jesus Christ. Daniel runs a YouTube page called Messages of Christ that goes into incredible detail in the life of Jesus Christ.   As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the final week of Jesus’ life is incredibly important to us, as the most important acts of the Savior were preformed during that momentous week.

If you have been to a Church meeting in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, you have probably heard the word "sustain" used rather frequently. So what does it mean to "sustain" someone in the Church? Do I need to constantly be aware of the person's needs and responsibilities? Do I need to agree with everything a Church leaders says and does in order to fully "sustain" the person? What if I sustain someone but don't agree with them? Is that possible? Today, we talk all about sustaining leaders. What do you think it means to sustain your leaders?

We are so grateful to have Siggi and Alex join us today for an episode story of conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church). Siggi talks about how he was living a life of little purpose and dependence on alcohol. Alex was serving a mission during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when he reached out to Siggi on Facebook. Siggi had little idea of the message of the "Mormons" but listened to what Alex and his mission companion had to say.
