It’s been the subject of allegation and rumour for over a decade, but now a damning US Senate report has detailed post-9/11 interrogation tactics used by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The report outlines what it terms “brutal” and “ineffective” interrogations of al-Qaeda suspects.

The Senate Intelligence Committee also says the C-I-A misled the White House and Congress with inaccurate claims about the program’s usefulness in thwarting attacks.

Human rights groups are calling for the prosecution of US officials responsible for the CIA’s post-9/11 interrogation program detailed by a Senate intelligence committee this week and the report’s revelations have been condemned around the world.

Crossbench senators have helped pass major changes to Australia’s migration laws through the Senate including the reintroduction of Temporary Protection Visas.

The Senate and the House of Representatives were forced to delay their departure for the summer holidays as the Senate sat through the night before passing the bill and returning it to the lower house for final agreement.

In return for crossbench support the government has agreed to quickly process the claims of 30 thousand asylum seekers languishing in detention centres across Australia.

Australia’s peak employer group – the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry -says bosses are heeding calls for greater work-life balance.

At the same time, the Chamber warns the needs of businesses must be taken into account when judging how reasonable work hours are.

It follows a survey of one-thousand workers, which suggests Australians are doing billions of dollars in unpaid overtime each year.

And according to the Australia Institute – an independent think-tank – the situation isn’t improving.
