Tens of thousands of onshore asylum seekers currently stuck in legal limbo could soon be able to apply for resettlement in Australia.

The Abbott government has struck a deal with the Palmer United Party to bring back Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) and create a new visa class known as a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa, or S-H-E-V.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has confirmed pre-dawn raids on homes across Sydney were sparked by intelligence reports that supporters of the Islamic State were planning killings in Australia.

The incoming United Nations human-rights chief has condemned the Australian Government for violating the human rights of asylum seekers.

Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein (ZAY-ed RAH-hahd al-HOO-sane) has made the remarks during his maiden speech to the U-N Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Mr Zeid described the Government’s policies of mandatory offshore detention and boat turn-backs as producing a chain of human-rights violations.
