With Sunday (sept 7) marking the end of the Abbott Government’s first year in power, it’s a natural time for reflecting on how it’s fared. On the domestic front, the Government’s tough budget has haunted Prime Minister Tony Abbott ever since it was released in May. Our presenter Kulasegaram Sanchayan talks to Poonkuzhali, the writer-director of the documentary film, “Thee Varaivu” – the documentary film aimed at creating awareness on the risks behind consanguineous marriages and intra caste marriages. Shot in Tamil Nadu, India, Thee Varaivu, discusses how with generations of intra-caste marriages, the society is now facing critical physical, psychological and physiological issues, especially genetic disorders. Medical, Human Genetic and Anthropological experts explain how, not only close-kin marriages or consanguineous marriages that possess the risk of genetic disorders, but also intra caste marriages. The film also includes personal stories of affected individuals and their parents.

International leaders have come out to condemn the beheading of United States journalist James Foley by Islamic State militants.

The condemnations come after the militant group, centred in Iraq and Syria, released a video of Mr Foley’s beheading.

The 40-year-old reporter had been missing since he was seized in Syria in November 2012.

In the meantime, United States military authorities are warning that the Islamic State militant group presents a long-term threat greater than terrorist threats of the past.

Australian scientists are being lauded after taking a huge step towards the Holy Grail of modern medicine: creating blood stem cells outside the human body.

From blood stem cells all types of blood cells grow.

And if they could be grown in plentiful supply, it would revolutionise the way cancers and other blood and imune system disorders are treated.
