About the Author: Steve Wachtel is an American author from Washington Heights in New York City. He was born in Brooklyn where he lived until he was nine. He describes Brooklyn in the old days as a little United Nations due to its multinational society, a society that enriched his life to this present day.

Long Island, where he spent the rest of his youth, was another part of New York that enriched his life with its own unique multi-generational diverse communities and societies. Education was a key aspect of his life then and when he looks back at the schooling he received on Long Island he often recalls the fine teachers he had who encouraged him to read a broad selection of genres as well as supporting him to write some of his own stories. Steve’s father was an avid science fiction follower and Steve often found himself sitting in the family basement reading those books, but as to writing science fiction, that turned out not to be Steve’s forte.

Hawking back to Steve’s school days, those were the days where he discovered his passion for poetry, having read countless poets remains a deep-seated passion of his. However, writing a poem that in his eyes would be acceptable to publish didn’t come about until one day in 1976 when he was in a park supporting a young person, as dusk descended, he had an influx of words that flooded his head, scrambling for paper he quickly jotted them down, and he has been doing that ever since. Steve has published eight poetry books and seven children’s books.

Apart from writing, Steve like his wife Maxine has worked for some considerable years in social work mainly focusing on psychiatric needs of New York’s more vulnerable and needy society, who mainly stem from deprived ethnic groups, the poor or those whose lives for some reason have fallen apart.

The one person who has supported Steve in all that he has accomplished is Maxine, his wife of fifty years to whom he refers to as his chief cheerleader.

About the Book: Sandlot Poet for me is a book that contains a plethora of free verse poems that touch on everyday life, in particular life on the streets of New York from where the author comes from. When I read the poems having been to New York I could envisage Steve sitting in his apartment looking out of his window watching the hustle and bustle of life going by on the streets below or sitting on a bench in a park like Washington Square, or Central Park itself observing life in all its varied formats. I loved this book, the poems are at times poignant, dignified and above all down to earth.
