In this episode we return to a former subject of this podcast, Cotton Mather and tear another chapter from his life story. We first met Cotton in the episode, A Pox to You, where Cotton was the voice of reason, the man of science who stood up to superstitious misgivings and disinformation. He was, not to put too finer point on it, the hero of that story. So how does our man of science and reasoning acquit himself at the Salem Witch Trials?

In this true crime special episode we delve into the sickening tale of one of the U.K’s most successful serial killers, Matthew Hopkins the self-proclaimed Witchfinder General. Between 1644 and 1646 Hopkins may have murdered as many as three hundred people under the guise of doing the lord’s work. Hopkins is a fascinating individual and hundreds of historians have written thousands of pages about him. Just go online and there is a plethora of information about him and his life before, during and after his one and half year reign of terror. But he hasn’t had the Satan is my Superhero treatment yet!

In this episode we will finally get to the WITCHES of Shakespeare’s Macbeth!

Because of course, let us not forget it is our Spooky Month Special!

The witches are in fact the very first characters to appear onstage. Act 1, Scene 1, A Desert Place. The trio speak in a different rhythm to everyone else in the play. This allows their vocal performance to sell their otherworldliness. Described by Shakespeare as weyward sisters in the first folio, refer to my excellent description of what the first folio is, in the last episode. These ladies are from the Upside Down. They’re from Bizarro World. They come from a place where evil is good and good is evil. Despite all the evidence I provided in the last episode, I can still legitimately argue these weyward sisters are witches complete with withered in wild attire and facial hair!

That's right for the next 5 Tuesdays in a row we will be delving into the wicked world of witchcraft.

We kick spooky month off as we mean to go on and dive right into the witches of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Shakespeare never calls the 3 sisters in Macbeth, witches. The source material that inspired him to write the play never calls them witches. They might not be witches. So if Shakespeare didn't call them witches, what did he call them and where does that leave us?

Of the many plays he wrote Macbeth is one of the most famous. The Tragedie of Macbeth was first performed in 1606. While the play is based on real historical people, Duncan, Macbeth and Malcolm really were kings of the Scots. The play does not necessarily follow the actual events.

Shakespeare uses the plot of Macbeth to create a cautionary tale for any would be usurper looking to dethrone any rightful monarch. Oh and coincidentally, Shakespeare’s employer/patron at the time WAS the ‘rightful’ monarch of England. This employer was also massively into the hunting and killing of witches. So yeah.
