Savel Svetec, born in the Prekmurje region of Slovenia arrived in Australia in May 2017. He studied journalism in Slovenia and spoke to us about his many experiences living and working in Australia over the past 10 months. Savel hopes to work in Australia and remain here for the long term. 

Savel Svetec, rojen v Prekmurju, trenutno biva v Avstraliji, kamor je prišel nabirat nove izkušnje. V Sloveniji je študiral novinarstvo, trenutno pa išče zaposlitev, ki bi mu omogočila daljše bivanje na peti celini.

Mr and Mrs Virglilij and Dragica Gomizelj from Melbourne are well known and very respected within the Slovenian Community in Australia. Both joined us for an extended chat about their lives in Slovenia and Australia, their involvement within the Slovenian Community in Melbourne and how they met and married 67 years ago. Virgilij also spoke passionately about his time as a prisoner on Goli Otok and how he suffered terribly at the hands of the Communist regime simply for daring to challenge and criticise their authority! Virigilij recently celebrated his milestone 90th birthday in the company of his beautiful family and many friends at the Slovenian Association Melbourne where he and his wife have been members since its inception in 1954. 

Gospod Virgilij in Gospa Dragica Gomizelj sta v Melbournu zelo znana in spoštovana člana slovenske skupnosti.Zaupala sta nam svojo zgodbo, spominjala sta se časov, ko sta se spoznala. predstavila sta nam njuno dolgoletno in požrtvovalno delo v slovenski skupnosti. Še posebej zanimivo je bilo pripovedovanje Gospoda Virgilija, ki je bil zaprt na Golem Otoku, zgolj zaradi tega, kjer se ni strinjal s takratno oblastjo in ker si je upal povedati svoje mnenje. Januarja letos je praznoval 90. rojstni dan v krogu svojih najbližjih.

Andrew Potočnik is a renowned woodturner who has been involved with this particular art for over three decades. He speaks about his passion for wood turning and his latest exhibition being held in the Bolin Bolin Gallery in Melbourne in March and April 2018. Andrew also speaks about his work as an artist and educator over more than three decades.

Melbourne Slovenian, Mrs Draga Gelt OAM is a tireless cultural worker and teacher of Slovenian. She is inviting listerners to purchase the book titled 'The Power Of Words' written by hersef, Magda Pišotek and Marija Penca. Draga also speaks about Slovenian lanugage classes that she's currently running as well as the Slovenians in Australia website. 

Gospa Draga Gelt OAM iz Melbourna je neutrudljiva kulturna delavka, učiteljica slovenščine in avtorica mnogih knjig. Spregovorila je o novi knjigi 'Moč Besed' in vabi tiste, ki bi želeli to knjigo naročiti, da to storijo do 24. marca letos. Draga tudi vodi tečaj slovenščine za odrasle in je zelo ponosna na svoje učence, saj kot sama pravi, 'slovenski jezik ni lahek'! Draga je prav tako govorila o spletni strani, 'Slovenians in Australia', ki jo skrbno vodi. 

Slovenian musicians Jože Kotar (clarinet) and Luca Ferrini (piano) have been performing together for over a decade. They're currently on tour in Australia with a special performance program entitled 'Music from the islands'. This is dedicated to music for piano and clarinet written by composers who live work or come from different islands around the world.

Klarinetist Jože Kotar in pianist Luca Ferrini skupaj nastopata že več kot 10 let. Njun koncertni program je zelo raznolik: od klasične do moderne glasbe. Trenutno izvajata dela skladateljev, ki živijo in delujejo na različnih otokih po svetu, predvsem na Tasmaniji. Turnejo sta poimenovala "Glasba iz otokov".

Slovenian paragliders Rok Dolinšek, Marko Novak and Jurij Vidic joined us in the studios of SBS Radio in Melbourne to discuss their involvement at the Australian World Paragliding Cup, held in Bright, Victoria. They thoroughly enjoyed many new cultural experiences in Australia and have some unforgettable memories of their visit Down Under!

The 2018 Slovenian Bee Keeping Festival will be held at the Slovenian Club Jadran on Sunday, March 4th. Mr Stan Starc, who represents the Bee Keeping Assocation at the club has more to say about this annual event.

Last Sunday, 11th February, the new Slovenian consulate in Victoria was officially opened in Geelong by the Slovenian minister for Economic development and Technology Zdravko Pocivalsek and Slovenian Ambassador to Australia, Helena Drnovsek Zorko. Honorary consul for Victoria Eddy Kontelj hosted this event, whereby various members of the Slovenian and Australia governments spoke and were present.

Preteklo nedeljo 11. februarja je potekala slovesna otvoritev novega konzulata Republike Slovenije v Viktoriji, ki ima sedež v Geelongu. V uradnem delu prireditve so bili govori s strani slovenske in avstralske vlade. Med častnimi gosti je bil tudi slovenski minister za gospodarski razvoj in tehnologijo Zdravko Počivalšek, ki je skupaj s slovensko veleposlanico v Avstraliji Heleno Drnovšek Zorko uradno odprl novi konzulat.

Over the last week, Slovenian minister for Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Pocivalsek was on an official visit in Australia. He met with various Australian colleagues, as well as being the keynote speaker at the Slovenian Tourism workshops in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. We spoke with him about his visit whilst in Sydney.

V tem tednu je bil na uradnem obisku v Avstraliji in Novi Zelandiji slovenski minister za gospodarski razvoj in tehnologijo Zdravko Pocivalsek. Srecal se je z razlicnimi politicnimi kolegi in je med drugim tudi bil slavnostni govornik na prireditvi ki ga je organizirala Slovenska Turisticna Organizacija. Pogovorjali smo se z njim ob robu obiska v Sydneyu.
