A coroner has found the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine almost two years ago was an act of gross mass murder. He delivered the finding after conducting an inquest at the request of the families of six New South Wales victims who were among the 298 people killed. Gross mass murder is how New South Wales State Coroner Michael Barnes summed up the downing of Flight MH 17. Under Australian law, coroners' are able to hold inquests into the deaths of people from their jurisdictions who die overseas...  -

With more than 120 Australians fighting for Islamic State and 170 people actively supporting extremist groups in Australia the committee says security agencies and police need to be given the necessary instruments to confront this threat. The laws have been heavily criticised by constitutional lawyers who argue they would not stand up to a High Court challenge.

Australia's former ambassador to Indonesia, Greg Moriarty, is to become the nation's first counter-terrorism coordinator. Mr Moriarty will head a new office within Prime Minister Tony Abbot's own department. As well, Justice Minister Michael Keenan becomes minister assisting the prime minister on counter terrorism. The government says the appointments will ensure nothing is missed in the fight against terrorismPrime Minister Tony Abbott has moved to improve government relations with Muslim leaders and communities at risk of Islamic radicalisation. Mr Abbott has appointed parliamentary secretary Concetta Fierravanti-Wells to a new frontbench position with a brief to develop better relations with community leaders. He has also appointed former immigration minister Philip Ruddock as a special envoy for citizenship and community engagement. Ukraine's Minister of Finance Natalie Jaresko and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Aivaras Abromavicius presented their visions of Ukraine's economic future at the book release, followed by a panel discussion with the ministers and Åslund.Beset by Russian military aggression and the legacy of many years of economic mismanagement, Ukraine faces a severe crisis. Yet in 2014, Ukraine changed regimes and carried out both presidential and parliamentary elections that were widely deemed free and fair. Last December, the new government presented a comprehensive reform program, and on March 11, the International Monetary Fund approved a four-year stabilization program of $40 billion for Ukraine. Natalie Jaresko was appointed minister of finance of Ukraine in December 2014. Previously she worked in the private sector, first as president and chief executive officer of Western NIS Enterprise Fund (WNISEF) and later as managing partner and chief executive officer of Horizon Capital, a private equity fund manager she cofounded in 2006. From 1992 until 1995, she worked as chief of the economic section of the US embassy in Ukraine. Aivaras Abromavicius was appointed minister of economic development and trade of Ukraine in December 2014. Previously, he worked as fund manager and partner of East Capital Asset Management group. He has worked in the financial sector in Estonia, Sweden, Russia, and Ukraine. Anders Åslund has been senior fellow at the Institute since 2006 and has followed the Ukrainian economy closely since 1985. He served as an economic advisor to the Ukrainian government from 1994 to 1997 and he co-chaired two blue ribbon commissions on economic programs for Ukraine.(Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC). President signed decrees on granting Ukrainian citizenship to three foreign citizens - candidates for the posts in the Cabinet of Ministers. Under the decrees signed by the President on December 2, Ukrainian citizenship shall be granted to Aivaras Abromavicius, Aleksandre Kvitashvili and Natalia Yaresko.  Commenting on his decision, Petro Poroshenko said: "Ukraine faces extraordinary challenges - extremely difficult economic situation, Russian aggression, urgent need for radical reforms and struggle against corruption. These challenges require unordinary decisions in public administration, which provide for the search of candidates for the new Government not only in Ukraine, but also abroad, especially in the countries with a rich experience in overcoming systemic crisis of internal and external origin". Contender for the position in the government Aleksandre Kvitashvili noted: "I've been working over reforms in Ukraine for the last 3 months, but my love to this country lasts much longer. I've accepted the proposal to work in the Ukrainian Government because of my deep respect to Ukraine and its people. I am proud to become a citizen of this great country with a great future". Aleksandre Kvitashvili has been the Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia. Aivaras Abromavicius has a solid experience of investment activity in the countries of Eastern Europe. "I am proud and honored to be granted Ukrainian citizenship. I've been married to Ukrainian for 10 years. All 3 kids were born in Kyiv and feel very patriotic about this beautiful country that is experiencing challenging times. I hope my efforts and experience will help Ukraine reach a totally different level…
