We walked you through the shocking double-murder case that started with a confession from college student Harry Edward Kilgore, then took the first of many unexpected turns when an alleged accomplice–George Daggitt, a music professor from that same college– was named.

This week we have the privilege to speak with Wes Swietek, author of the book “The Cemetery Road Murders: The Shocking True Tale of Kentucky’s Murder Mansion.”

What happened to Harry Kilgore and George Daggitt after the final trial? What was the true story behind the alleged extortion scheme? Did the jury make the right decision regarding George Daggitt’s guilt? And what really happened that fateful night in June of 1948 when Charles and Martha Martin were brutally murdered in their own home?

We discuss all this and so much more in this lively interview with author Wes Swietek. So be sure to travel to Cemetery Road with us for this glimpse inside the notorious Murder Mansion.

Wednesday, June 30, 1948, Dr. Charles Martin and his wife Martha Martin were discovered in the bedroom of their palatial home in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The murder scene was so grisly, the police at first mistakenly believed the elderly couple had been attacked with an ax.

Within days the investigators had a full confession from college student Harry Edward Kilgore, and it seemed a matter of case closed… But they couldn’t have been more wrong.

This was just the beginning of the tragic double-murder case detailed in the book “The Cemetery Road Murders: The Shocking True Tale of Kentucky’s Murder Mansion” by Wes Swietek.

In this week’s episode we walk you through the twists and turns of this true crime case that would end up involving an insanity hearing, a possible love triangle, an extortion scheme, an alleged accomplice, and even more shocking developments.

You won’t want to miss this episode! Not only will you be drawn into the intriguing story behind the infamous Murder Mansion, but you’ll also be ready for our fascinating interview with author Wes Swietek that drops next Tuesday.

But how much of what we believe to be true about the legendary Hatfield and McCoy family feud is actually myth– or even false impressions created by the media?

That’s just one of the many questions we explore in this fascinating episode.

Was it really the notorious hog incident that started the family feud? Were Johnse Hatfield and Roseanna McCoy truly the star-crossed lovers they’ve been made out to be, and if so, what happened with their romance? What exactly transpired during the brutal New Year’s Day Massacre? And just how accurate is the 2012 miniseries starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton?

Join us as we discuss all this and so much more! The show is also available on your favorite podcast app and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.

It’s a Scandal Water double feature! In this episode you get two breakup stories for the price of one! 😉

Mamma Mia! It’s been 50 years since ABBA, clad in silver platform boots and bright outfits garnished with shiny sequins, won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, effectively catapulting the group toward international superstardom.

But at its core, ABBA was about two musically gifted couples who decided to combine their talents. So how did it affect this beloved rock band when several years later, as they were reveling in their success and ‘money, money, money,’  first one couple, and then the second, decided to split?

That’s one of the key questions we explore in this nostalgic and lively episode dedicated to one of the most enduring and beloved bands in music history, ABBA. And what better time to pay tribute to the group that created hits like “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen,” sparked a Broadway musical and two films, and in recent years became the subject of a virtual concert experience than on the occasion of this 50th anniversary?

No need to take a chance on this episode–it’s sure to entertain! The show is also available on your favorite podcast app and the Scandal Water Podcast YouTube channel.

The horse-drawn covered wagon pulls to a stop at the top of a hill. Pa and Ma smile from the wagon seat as they watch their three young girls, clad in petticoats and prairie dresses, scamper down the wildflower-covered slope, little Carrie taking a tumble on the way.

If like millions of others you grew up watching “Little House on the Prairie,” chances are you not only visualized the scene being described, but even heard the stirring strains of the theme song playing in your mind. But what you may not realize is that this year– hold onto your bonnet– the beloved TV classic turns 50!

In this special Varietea episode we celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Little House on the Prairie” by discussing everything from the show’s origins and cast, to fun behind-the-scenes stories and even a few of the controversies that have come to light in more recent years.

Elizabeth Taylor is remembered for her legendary screen performances, dedicated activism related to the AIDS cause, and keen business sense.

But her accomplishments were sometimes overshadowed by the romantic entanglements of her personal life… relationships that earned her the title 'homewrecker' and at one point prompted the Pope to advocate Elizabeth’s children be taken away from her.

Our September theme is Breaking Up is Hard to Do, at our listeners’ request, and who better to highlight than Hollywood screen star Elizabeth Taylor, who made even breaking up look easy.

Join us as we trace Liz’s 8 marriages, including the scandalous affair with Richard Burton that the Pope denounced as “erotic vagrancy,” one relationship that ended due to abuse and another due to death, and the wedding that took place at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch to a man 20 years younger.

On Tuesday, July 24, 1984, a friend discovered 68 year-old Delores Lynch, deceased, on the driveway outside her home. Upon arrival, the police– including Oldham County detective Lynn Nobles–  were surprised to also discover Delores’s 39-year-old daughter Janie inside. Both women had died from gunshot wounds that appeared to be from a professional hit.

Before it was all said and done, 7 more would be dead and two families nearly destroyed.

This bizarre and tragic murder case, as detailed by Jerry Bledsoe in his best-selling true crime book “Bitter Blood” and a subsequent 1994 made for TV miniseries, was the subject of a Scandal Water episode last September.

And in today’s very special Varietea episode we are proud to share our follow-up interview with the aforementioned detective, Lynn Nobles, who not only worked the Lynch murder investigation from the very beginning, but was also present during that fateful police chase in North Carolina, even sustaining an injury from Fritz Klenner’s gunfire.

You won’t want to miss this interview during which Lynn walks us through the case from his own first-hand perspective, sharing new insights and clarifying a few points that were missed in the book.
