Cartoons that comment on current events are a vital part of free societies and democracies. Editorial cartoons, also known as "political cartoons," are visual commentaries on politics, government, and politicians through irony, satire, and symbolism. Readers of political cartoons, whether critical or supportive of the figures or parties depicted, may experience a wide range of feelings and responses. Despite the power of these cartoons, the art form can trigger uneasy reactions from the public in support of a belligerent power system, and often cartoonists can be attacked, either verbally or physically. Join the Scicle podcast for this episode with Sajith Kumar, a senior cartoonist at Deccan Herald, to understand what makes a political cartoon and how the current power system makes it harder to criticise people in power.

Remember Nimmi and Sally? The year was 1986 when the quintessential storyteller, P Padmarajan brought Nimmi, Sally and some other people to cinemas. A  movie which did receive appreciation. And, of late, this movie receives much more interpretation on top of the favourite reviews by Papettan fans. It is almost evident, as said by the crew, that "Deshadana Kili Karayarilla", is a movie which portrayed lesbianism in a diluted way. What made Padmarajan portray those two girls behind friendship, at least what made him dilute the emotions? The answer is short: SOCIETY. 

Cut to 2022, most probably your youtube recommendations would have shown you a one million hit thumbnail. Yes, a short film is in the news now, New Normal. This Malayalam movie is gaining traction elsewhere on social media. The movie is applauded for portraying a lesbian relationship in such a beautiful way. Embellished with rich visuals, New Normal, is receiving a warm reception. Part of the reason for this is because we’ve changed.

ഇന്നലെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തു 1636 പുതിയ കോവിഡ് കേസുകൾ സ്ഥിതീകരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ കൂടുതൽ ആളുകൾക്കും ഞെട്ടൽ ഉണ്ടാവാൻ വഴിയില്ല, പക്ഷെ ഇത്രയും തന്നെ കേസുകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞവർഷം ഇതേസമയം ആണ് റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്തിരുന്നതെങ്കിലോ! ഇതേ അക്കം തന്നെ മറ്റൊരു രീതിയിലായിരിക്കും നമ്മളിൽ സ്വാധീനിക്കുക. ഒരേ വിവരംതന്നെ പല രീതിയിലും നമ്മളിൽ സ്വാധീനിക്കാം. കേസുകളുടെ എണ്ണത്തിൽ  മാത്രമല്ല അവ എപ്പോൾ പറയുന്നു എന്നതും പ്രധാനപെട്ടതാണ്. ഡാറ്റയുടെ ഈ ഒരു ഘടകംകൂടെ മനസിലാക്കുക എന്നത് ഒഴിച്ചുനിർത്താൻ ആവില്ല. ദിനംപ്രതിവരുന്ന കോവിഡ് കേസുകൾ എത്രയുണ്ട്?, അവ എവിടെയെല്ലാമാണ്? എത്രപേർ രോഗമുക്തരായി? എന്നുള്ളതൊക്കെ അറിഞ്ഞു അത് ശെരിയായ രീതിയിൽ ചിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തി ആളുകളിലേക്ക്‌ എത്തിക്കുക എന്നത് നിസ്സാരജോലിയല്ല. കോവിഡ്സമയത്തു ഇതിനായി കുറച്ചുപേർ സ്വയം രംഗത്തിറങ്ങി ഒരു കൂട്ടായ്മയുണ്ടാക്കിയിരുന്നു. എത്ര കോവിഡ് കേസുകൾ വന്നു എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഇന്ന് എത്ര ഒമൈക്രോൺ കേസുകളുണ്ട് എന്ന രീതിയിലേക്ക് നമ്മളെത്തിനിൽക്കുകയാണ്. ഈ മഹാമാരിയോട് പൊരുത്തപ്പെട്ടു ജീവിക്കാൻ നമ്മൾ പഠിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നതിനെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് കടന്നുപോയ ദിവസങ്ങൾ.

എന്നിരുന്നാലും കോവിഡിന്റെ ആദ്യനാളുകളിൽ ഓരോ കേസുകളെയും ഭീതിയോടെയായിരുന്നു നമ്മൾ സമീപിച്ചിരുന്നത്. എല്ലാ സ്തംഭിച്ചുപോയൊരു സമയം! ആശുപത്രികൾ തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞുകഴിഞ്ഞാൽ എന്തുചെയ്യും എന്നോർത്തു ഭരണകൂടം പതറിപ്പോയ സമയം. അവിടുന്നൊക്കെനാം ഒരുപാടു സഞ്ചരിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞു. പക്ഷെ ഒമൈക്രോൺ വന്നതോടുകൂടി വീണ്ടും ആശങ്കകൾക്ക് സാധ്യത വർധിച്ചു. പഴയതുപോലെ കേസുകൾ കൂടിവന്നാൽ കാര്യങ്ങൾ വഷളാവുകയും, സമൂഹം വീണ്ടുമൊരു സ്തംഭനംനേരിടുമോ എന്നും നമ്മളിൽ പലരും ചിന്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവും. അതങ്ങനെയാണ് ഒരു സമൂഹത്തെ മുഴുവൻ ബാധിക്കുന്ന വിഷയത്തെ ആശങ്കയോടുകൂടിയല്ലാതെ നമുക്ക് സമീപിക്കാനാവില്ല. രോഗി ഒരാൾ മാത്രമാണെങ്കിൽ പേടിക്കാനില്ല, പക്ഷെ സമൂഹം മുഴുവൻ ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്നം നേരിടേണ്ടിവന്നാൽ കീഴ്വഴക്കങ്ങൾ മാറി മാറിയും.

ഈ അവസ്ഥയിലാണ് പൊതുജനാരോഗ്യം എന്ന മേഖലയെ പറ്റിയുള്ള അവബോധം എത്രകണ്ട് ആവശ്യമാണ് എന്ന് നമ്മൾ മനസിലാക്കുന്നത്.
