  • CARTA 10th Anniversary Symposium: Revisiting the Agenda - Kristen Hawkes Alyssa Crittenden Patricia Churchland
CARTA celebrates its 10th anniversary with a whirlwind tour of anthropogeny, the study of the origin of humans, by addressing these questions across multiple disciplines: What do we know for certain? What do we think we know? What do we need to know? How do we proceed? This program: Kristen Hawkes, Alyssa Crittenden, Patricia Churchland. Series: "CARTA - Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny" [Science] [Show ID: 34694]

  • Food Feed and Climate Change – Emerging Opportunities for Shore Based Seaweed Aquaculture
Join Dr. Jennifer Smith and entrepreneur Brant Chlebowski as they tell the story of their collaboration on applied aquaculture research of commercially valuable seaweeds – research that has sparked the formation of the California Seaweed Company and a new area of research in the Smith lab related to food and feed uses of local seaweeds. Series: "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" [Science] [Show ID: 34570]

  • Studying Climate Change Through Surfing with Smartfin - We Are CSE: Jasmine Simmons
Smartfin is a surfboard fin that allows scientists to collect data about the ocean with the help of surfers around the world. The project brings together engineers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and students from the Computer Science and Engineering department at UC San Diego. Traditionally, it has been difficult to collect data near the shore because waves damage any instruments researchers place in the water. But, Smartfin turns that challenge into an advantage by enlisting the help of the surfing community. Series: "Computer Science Channel" [Science] [Show ID: 34350]

  • The Ocean's Stethoscope: How Technology is Being Used to Study Fish Populations - Exploring Ethics
Sooner or later, the food requirements of nine billion people with increasing appetites for seafood must be addressed. Although aquaculture may supply the majority of the global ‘seafood’, most aquaculture is fed meal from wild caught fish, such as sardine and anchovy. To estimate the distributions and abundance of these and other small fish off the west coast, NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center routinely conducts “acoustic-trawl” surveys. David Demer will briefly describe the vessels, instrumentation and methods that are used to conduct these surveys, and provide a virtual tour of the world-class facilities in La Jolla that are used to develop the next generation of autonomous, ocean-sampling technologies. Join us to learn more about this exciting technology and be part of a discussion about possible ethical challenges. Series: "Exploring Ethics" [Humanities] [Science] [Agriculture] [Show ID: 34378]

  • Unraveling CRISPR-Cas9 with Jennifer Doudna - Conversations with History
Conversations host Harry Kreisler welcomes Professor Jennifer Doudna of UC Berkeley for a discussion of her intellectual odyssey that led to the discovery of CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary tool for gene editing. In the conversation, they explore the implications of CRISPR-Cas9 for agriculture, biotechnology and biomedicine. They also discuss how education and public advocacy can broaden insight into the ethical and policy dimensions of the biological revolution that is upon us. • Eavesdropping on Whales: How Whale Calls Inform Science
Whales are among the most fascinating animals in the ocean. People are intrigued by their impressive size, intelligence, and their use of sound to communicate. Join postdoctoral scholar Goldie Phillips for a captivating look into how scientists use whale calls to study whale populations. Series: "Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series" [Science] [Show ID: 34395]

  • Ethical Issues in Cybersecurity Research - Exploring Ethics
Computer security is a field that is fundamentally co-dependent — an interplay between the potential risk created by technology and the actual threats created by adversaries. The dance between defenders, technologists and attackers is one that is rich and dynamic and fuels both a large active research community and a multi-billion dollar computer security industry. Inevitably, ethical issues are exposed at multiple levels of this stack -- frequently at precisely those points where consequences are not well understood. Stefan Savage, PhD, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, describes some of the ethical issues he has encountered in his work - ranging from measurement studies of cybercrime to identifying security vulnerabilities in automobiles - and explore how these issues have challenged and focused him. Series: "Exploring Ethics" [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 33716]
