Selene

It was a gloomy morning at the edge of Parvum Pond. The early mist had not dissipated, but instead climbed up the slight incline, engulfing the vanguard of the park row mansions and mixing with the slight drizzle from the grey sky. Four old buzzards in capes and top hats, sat hunched in an undecorated coach as it pulled up past The houses of Lavendula, Mulberry, Halite, and beyond a thick, overgrown hedge filled with dark thorns, bramble, and tiny poisonousness berries.

The Show must go on. Max and company spared the reputation of Madame Mustaches, Max pre-sold tickets to real opening of Pharaoh and booked in an entire season of acts to the stage, including a new magician's act featuring a spirit cabinet. Bennet interrogated Rudy Valerio at Needle street with some of the other inspectors. Charity thanked Max for his hospitality but set off into the city once again, a copy of The Lantern newspaper in her hands and a job circled in pencil.

Hope’s fingers wrapped around Charity’s neck, her thumbs pressing hard on her trachea. Charity had just slipped from consciousness just behind the curtain in the dark stage of the variety theater Madame Mustache’s. The audience had breached the doors, slowly streaming in and taking their seats. The house a murmur of rumors of the murder that had taken place on that very stage the night before. One slight tug on the curtain rope and the audience would be witnessing the second murder on that very spot and open the show to the one night only Murder Follies.

Word had spread about the playwright Arthur’s murder. Inspector Bennet from Needle Street had been inside the theater all day, interrogating witnesses and looking for clues. Although, why he was currently crammed inside a small corridor on his hands and knees under the stage in complete darkness he didn’t know. But his companion, The Curio Maise Myeres, had felt something amiss and wanted to show him what she’d found….

Maximillian didn’t want to benefit from his friend Arthur’s demise, but he had to bridge the news of the murder and refocus everyone on the stars and performances of the theater. Arthur’s body was carried away, a final dramatic act for the stage, his first ever role outside of playwright. A paranoia had settled in among the cast and crew, everyone moving too fast to stop and accept what had happened, but in the back of their minds knowing there was a killer on the loose.

Where do the lost dreams of Selene escape and smear into colored streams, flowing into gutters with the rain? where does promise rise and unfurl with the thick red velvet of a curtain? What exactly is a show and how do you draw the line of a stage? A distraction from ourselves, an intoxication, a slight promise. Are we all not actors from moments as we awake?

We take comfort that someone is maintaining these wonderful lairs like the Duchess. Like the sound of Vincent’s typewriter spilling words on the page or the sound of a cocktail shaker pouring out the first round as Lloyd tries out a new concoction on Cecil at The Carousel Bar. As Thurston prepares a new soup of the day at The Galliard, as Winston checks in another guest. You can rest assured, there’s always a room available for you at The Duchess.

Bankers, artists, mavens and magicians, actors and titans and models and musicians, society and even a criminal or two, at the Wormwoord Revelry at the Duchess Radiance Ballroom. The event of the season, where all the decadence on display at the Duchess hotel decorated resplendent in emerald for today.
