We had a very special guest this morning, the man who led the Staten Island little leaguers so close to the World Series...Joe Calabrese checked in to talk about the team’s incredible run!
Joe is in Kentucky right now to see his son Rob, who plays in the San Francisco Giants organization, but he took time out to talk about Staten Island being just one win away from the US finals in the Little League World Series before losing to Georgia 7-3 in the semi-finals. The kids were honored at Citi Field Sunday before the Mets played the Nationals. The kids got advice from Mets players & practiced with them on the field, they toured the Mets locker room & had lunch there too….They were recognized on the field before the first pitch.
Mid-Island played in memory of Joe’s younger brother John, who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2014 at the age of 45, leaving behind then 8-year-old son, John Jr. (who played for the team this year).
Joe played for his dad Nick, 80, who coached at Mid-Island for 32 years, and coached sons, Joe Jr., 25 who now mentors the kids, and Rob, 22, a catcher who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants last year.
