Most businesses start by solving a problem. That is exactly what Anthea Tolan did when she created Great Ocean Road Living.

After buying a holiday home in Torquay, finding trusted local businesses to work on the property became a challenge being new to the area and not knowing many people.

In addition, there was no easy-to-use online directory to find local businesses, so she set out to create one that was convenient and quick for businesses to be found online.

And, Great Ocean Road Living Business Directory was born.

The bonus of what she created allowed residents, holiday homeowners, and visitors to connect with local business owners. It's a win-win!

Today we will be talking about differentiation and why it's essential to attracting clients to your service-based business.

If you are in a service-based business - you're an online professional, you offer creative services like website design, social media, copywriting, and even professional services like accounting and law - you're in a crowded market because the internet means that we've got a global market.

So people can reach out to people anywhere and utilise their services. It's only going to get more crowded because more and more people realise that they don't need to work for someone else anymore.

They can work from home, work the hours they want, and for themselves. And we all know how great that freedom is when we're doing that.

So, there'll be more and more people since COVID kicked off. Many people might've succeeded in creating a great brand and a strong brand message and being clear about what they do. But now, honestly, it's not enough!

Go and look at 5 to 10 competitors on social media and see what they're posting. And you're probably going to read their posts and think you could have written that, or that's exactly what you say.

There's just so much sameness, especially when people focus on lots of 'how-to content'.

Anyone can tell someone how to do something if they know the method for it. So, I want you to think a little bit differently.

Today I am joined by Tracey from TM Solicitor.

Tracey is a business lawyer and will share her insights on dealing with the different types of copycats that we may encounter in our business life. 

There's been a bit of discussion online about it lately. Still, it's something that I think we all, at one point in our business life where we have somebody who either is copying our stuff, plagiarising it, or potentially even impersonating us.

I did have one who set up an account in my name using my photo pretending, which was the one that is probably the highest level of copycat there is. They were then sending all of my contacts connection requests. I have no idea who it was to this day.

But I had a few people help me out. We all reported the account, and it was shut down, luckily.

But I don't know how I would have found out if someone else hadn't told me about it because it was literally that they had a connection request from me, and they thought it was strange.

Luckily, I was already connected to her, and she knows me quite well. I had a look and realised that it was another account pretending to be me.

So yes, this happens all the time. It's scary!

I will reveal one of the worst pieces of marketing advice that I see out there all of the time.

And I still see it on so many business advice websites, especially government sites, or anything published a while ago.  It's advice you would give someone back in the 1980s.

And it's this: when you're starting a business or looking to expand, look for a hole in the market. 

Now, why do I say this is one of the worst pieces of business or marketing advice?

It's because when you are looking for a hole in the market, you are going to be creating something that does not currently exist. And what that means for you is that you'll need to validate there is a need for it and then educate your market that it exists.

This is one of the worst ways to have a growth business because when you need to do all of that validation, development, education, you're creating the longest pathway to a sale possible. Let's use the wheel as an example.

I know this is very cliched, but you don't need to invent the wheel. You just need to redesign it! Maybe use different materials, reimagine what the wheel should be and how it could work better than the wheel that already exists.

The guy who invented the wheel - or girl - whoever it was, we don't know who that is. They didn't get rich from inventing the wheel.

The people who've got rich from the wheel are all of the people who've taken a design of something and then made their own version of it. There have been so many people who've gotten wealthy from the wheel.

They did not invent the wheel. So, when you're in a service-based business, what you should be doing instead of looking for a hole in the market is understanding what it is that you do well.

What do you love to do? Where are your skills? Find your place in the market and see what others are doing there and how you can differentiate. That's how you get a growth model quickly.

On the podcast today, I'm talking about something I see as one of the biggest problems that many entrepreneurs have.

I have this conversation repeatedly with many people in my coaching groups and even in my Facebook group.

The. Struggle. Is. REAL!

They want to know how you get an ideal customer when you often have more than one in mind. 

Now, because we're entrepreneurs, this is common because you are a person that sees opportunities. So it's tough to feel like you're narrowing down or you've got to leave some behind.

And this would be the number one reason why it's so hard to find an ideal customer or create your avatar.

And I think if that's you, you probably have found that you just stop halfway through the process because it's just too hard to pick just one. 

Here's what I want you to know! If you do have more than one ideal customer, it's not the end of the world.  Yes. You can still do business.  Yes. You can still be successful if you have more than one. It's just going to be a little bit harder for you. 

And that becomes apparent any time that you've gone to do any sort of marketing activity.

For example, when working with a professional to do your social media, email, or website redesign, the first question they're going to ask is to tell us about who it is you're targeting. 

And this is where you commonly will start thinking, Oh dear! And then you run through a list of prospective customers or maybe even describing who your current customers are, and then that leaves everybody in a bit of a muddle as to what should we do here?
