Hello, hello.
Let's take a long, deep breath.
—
Settle into this moment intentionally and strategically by setting a clear intention to shift deeper into presence for a while.
—
Feel that intention being set inside you.
—
Let’s feel presence flowing through us now by listening to the sounds of life for 10 seconds.
Listen with all your attention.
—
Perfect.
After shifting into the present moment on demand becomes a habit for you, you won’t need to set your intention to live in presence as frequently because living presently will increasingly become your default state of mind and body.
That’s a big deal because living in presence feels like freedom.
Can you feel a shift has occurred within you already today?
Let’s listen to life and feel for freedom for another 10 seconds.
—
Nice.
Coming deeper into presence.
Feel the air on your skin now.
Feel the air against your skin.
—
Settle into your seat even further, if you're sitting down.
Allow your shoulders to relax — and your head to fall backwards.
Get fully comfortable.
—
Just feeling and being for now.
—
Trusting life.
—
Know that you’re loved by life.
Two of my favorite lines —
Love life. It loves you back.
It's true.
Loving life allows life to love you back.
Life is dying to love you back.
Let’s breathe into loving life together for a little while longer.
Deep breath.
Express your love for life.
—
Feel the freedom.
—
—
Perfect.
Have a great one.
I'll talk to you soon.
Stay present,
Sean

Let’s take a long, deep breath.

I woke up to the news that Roger Federer is retiring today.
What a run.
What a gift he's been to all of us.
He ushered back in an era where you could be friends with your opponent — where you could honor your opponent.
Where you valued the work that they put in.
Where you knew that if you played at the top of your game against the best in the world, you were doing it just to give yourself a chance at winning, Roger used to say.
You worked all year round, all day, to give yourself a chance at winning.
And when it came to the match, you were able to put everything out of your head — animosity, any negativity — and play at the peak of your powers.
And still, with all of that you just put yourself in a position to win — to give yourself a chance to win.
And if you didn't win, you still succeeded.
That's what I love about Roger Federer — he is all about the present moment.
In a lot of ways, what he did was usher back in a previous generation of tennis.
The Australians of old who my dad would tell me about.
There was Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall.
This was when tennis was amateur, turning professional eventually.
And so they would travel around together as buddies.
They would practice together.
The tournaments were smaller so they would play against each other a lot.
They were building something together.
We saw the same thing happen on the women's side.
Women's tennis wasn't as big — there weren't as many players, but the passion was there.
And they got together.
A handful of them, led by Billie Jean King, of course.
Eight of them would travel to tournaments, and they would play together.
They became great friends.
They respected and honored each other.
I've never seen in my lifetime that tradition honored — what tennis really is — it’s community at root, it's putting forward your best, it's competing as hard as you can to give yourself that chance to win.
And when you win, there's nothing better.
You're the only one standing after this tournament whittled everyone down.
I always say that tennis is a painful sport.
After the first day of the tournament, half of the people go home.
Half the people have lost.
After the second day of the tournament you've gone down from 32 players to 8 players, so only a quarter are left.
It's really a difficult sport.
You need that camaraderie.
You need that friendship.
If you lose on the first day, you have a whole week until the next tournament.
You need to put your head down and keep training.
Keep that vision intact.
And somehow convince yourself that next week will be a better day.
Tomorrow will be a better day.
Federer lived that in front of us for decades, in spades.
He brought the sport to a new level — an entirely new pedestal.
And those who came after him have carried that mantle.
We’ll miss him from the sport.
I'm sure he'll be with us for a long time in whatever capacity he continues in.
Let's shift together.
Give ourselves a chance of being present in this moment.
Inspired by Roger Federer.
Another deep breath.
—
Close your eyes with me, if you want to.
Relax into the space that you're sitting in.
—
And just be here.
Feeling life.
—
Connecting to life.
—
What do you feel?
I feel gratitude for the decades of Roger Federer tennis that we got to witness.
Thank you, Roger.
Thank you for being such a big part of my life, and tennis life, and now what has turned into the life of the whole world.
—
Let’s sit in silence together for a few seconds.
Just be.
Listening.
Feeling.
Letting everything else go.
—
—
—
Perfect.
Can you notice how your body changed?
Do you feel recharged for the day?
Do you feel inspired by the bar that Roger Federer set for being a human, for being a tennis player, for living a life?
Great job.
Have a great day.
I'll talk to you soon.
Stay present,
Sean

Hello, hello.
How are you? How's your day going?
Let's take a long deep breath.
—
—
I'm looking at some beautiful flowers.
Bring 100% of your attention to looking at something — giving it all your attention.
Let your love flow through you into that object.
It's easier if it's something beautiful like a sunflower, which is what I'm looking at.
But you can send your love into anything with all your attention.
So just study anything — notice it with attention in ways you've never noticed it before.
That's a way of giving love to it, right?
That in itself.
Notice how you shift a little bit as you study or interact with your object.
Doing that brings you into the present moment.
I’ve been noticing lately how a real challenge of life is to learn to consistently say “No” to a lot of things — but, also to say “Yes” to the right things.
When you don't say “No” to a lot of things, your life ends up becoming overly filled.
We naturally want to say “Yes” to life.
So, we have a vulnerability in the direction of saying “Yes” to too many things.
But then, what do you say “Yes” to?
How do you make decisions about what you say “Yes” to?
The better you get at solving that challenge for yourself, the more you're able to walk your own path — the more the journey feels right, feels purposeful, feels like the life you were meant to live.
For me, connecting to presence as a priority is the way that those “yeses” and “noes” get answered most effectively.
Part of that means coming into silence very consistently and listening for what feels right, and what doesn't feel right.
What feels like too much chaos?
What feels like the next step along your path?
Take another deep breath.
—
—
Depending on which words you use and how you think about life — “presence” very much overlaps with love.
Presence is life.
And love flows through life.
So getting connected to presence enables you to feel connected to love.
So… another way to make those decisions about what you let into your life is by asking: Is it growing love? Or, is it not growing love?
Does saying “Yes” feel right when you're present?
When your attention is fully here, you're not distracted by thought after thought, or stress after stress going through your head.
You're able to sit, and feel, and be, and notice what feels right — so you can live your life very deeply from that place — and not be distracted from your life.
So, of course, that's why we shift into presence so consistently.
Let's do that together and feel for what feels right, right now.
Listen with me.
I'll step outside.
Let’s listen to waves for a minute together as we feel.
With all our attention just being here.
—
—
Notice if you get distracted.
And let whatever it is that distracts you — that flows through your mind — to just keep flowing out of your mind until you come into full quiet.
—
Listen to life go by for 30 seconds or so.
—
—
—
Alright, perfect.
How do you feel?
Are you feeling like saying “Yes” to this moment?
I feel so grateful today.
I’m grateful to be able to drop in a presence and feel life flow through me.
Feel the meaning, the purpose that is associated with that experience of walking your personal path with as much full attention as you're able to in every moment.
Take one more long deep breath.
—
Have a great day.
I'll talk to you soon.
Stay present.

Did you know that ‘unhappiness’ has increased worldwide by over 43% between 2007 and 2021?
Source: Gallup 2022
Let’s Shift Unhappiness together.
That seems to be the call of our era.
So let’s take a long deep breath.
—
Bring 100% of your attention into the present moment by listening to the life occurring around you for a few seconds right now.
—
Feel your body shifting into a deeper connection with this moment, as you listen.
—
Feel that?
—
Twenty five years in psychology has taught me that most people are capable of learning how to strategically shift their state of mind when they choose to.
OnePerfect has been measuring that observation for years now.
It turns out that shifting how you feel in a few minutes is not that difficult to do for most people completing Shifts.
Over 95% of post-Shift surveys confirm that the person shifted toward or into their desired state of mind while completing the Shift.
That’s important news right now because shifting your state of mind strategically can help alleviate each of the 5 components of ‘unhappiness’ that Gallop measures and reports on —
* Sadness
* Stress
* Anger
* Worry
* Physical pain
We’ve found that the most difficult part of shifting is simply getting yourself to recognize that you need to begin shifting your state in the moments when you really need to.
Shifts help you address that challenge too because completing Shifts develop the self-awareness that is necessary to identify those moments when you need to shift yourself into a better state — so you can take action.
Developing that skill requires repetition of practice which is why I focus on delivering enjoyable Shifts to subscriber’s inboxes.
Thankfully, people are loving Shifts.
I suspect that’s because the Shift community is purpose-focused.
A large portion of the worldwide increase in unhappiness is related to a decline in people feeling a sense of life purpose.
So we prioritize shifting into peace, presence and flow because those mind-body states cultivate an implicit sense of personal meaning.
Feeling connected to your life amplifies your sense of connection to others which nourishes foundational aspect of yourself.
That’s what I love most about shifting.
Subscribe now to get new Shifts delivered to your inbox every week.
Shifts take you beyond happiness.
Feeling supported, valued and loved are feelings most of us need in order to feel consistently at peace.
And feeling at peace helps connect you to meaning and purpose.
That’s why ‘shifting’ includes becoming aware of what's occurring not only in your outside world, but also in your inner world — the world that exists inside your brain and body.
Your inner world is the world through which your thoughts and intuitions — and all those things that trigger you out of presence — flow.
Observing your inner world requires dropping into presence.
You need to create some space inside yourself (some presence) in order to listen and see what's occurring within.
When you do that you start to see some patterns playing out in your inner world.
When you listen to your inner world closely you see a world of relationships being maintained within you in every moment — a moving world.
Your history of relationships is accessible when you become present to your inner world too.
The more often you shift into presence, the more clear your inner world can become to you.
When you see your inner world clearly, you can influence so much more of your life experience.
Perhaps most important though is that completing Shifts makes it easier to navigate yourself into a better state of mind and body in those moments when you really need to shift.
Shifting always starts with attending all your attention in this moment.
So let’s take a long deep breath.
—
Again, bring 100% of your attention into the present moment.
—
Focusing your attention again on listening to life.
—
Listen to the sounds you otherwise would not hear for 10 seconds.
—
Notice the subtle change that occurs in your inner world as you focus all your attention on listening to life.
—
Feel that?
I feel it.
I love shifting with you.
Shifting together is being in community.
Shifting together is a form of supporting each other.
Let’s set an intention to remain fully present to each moment of our lives for the rest of today.
—
Can you feel that intention being set inside your body now?
—
I can.
Feel it.
—
Perfect.

Hello.
How are you?
—
Are you feeling present?
—
Is 100% of your attention focused right here, right now?
—
Let's take a long deep breath together.
—
Come fully into this moment with intention.
—
Listening to life.
—
All of our attention right here.
—
Notice how you feel right now.
—
Now take 5 seconds to invite your attention 100% to listen to the present moment.
Ready?
Listen.
—
Good.
Can you pick up a difference in how you feel after 5 seconds of intentional listening? —
I notice a difference inside my body.
As you consistently do little exercises like that you develop a more nuanced capacity to notice the difference in how where you place your attention impacts how you feel.
It all happens fast.
When you grasp how tight the relationship is between where your attention is and how you feel it helps with all sorts of choices that you make about how you place your attention throughout the day.
Getting clear about the relationship between where your attention is and how you feel shapes where you place your attention and why you place your attention as you do.
Let’s take another deep breath.
—
You’ll often notice yourself experiencing a ‘negative shift’ — characterized by a felt deviation from peace — as you get pulled away from your awareness that you can ride the wave of presence even when challenging ‘things’ happen.
Negative shift = losing your connection to peace or presence.
We often characterize the challenging ‘things’ that provoke our negative shifts into a bucket that we call ‘stress.’
But if you notice your inner experience in the moments when stress is arising you can dial in on what produced your negative shift — which helps you avoid repeating the same negative shift in the future.
You’ll notice that your negative shifts typically begin when you start thinking about something that upsets you.
It could be a family member.
It could be someone close to you who you’re having conflict with.
It could be your issues with health.
It could be your issues with work.
It could be your issues with money.
It could be the re-emergence of your historical view of yourself as flawed somehow.
Or maybe you’re reminded that your view of the future is not what you want it to be.
Thoughts come into your mind and change your physiology immediately.
Your worst triggers always increase your stress levels and usually create negative shifts.
What’s your worst trigger?
—
Notice what arises as you pose that question in your inner world.
What’s your worst trigger?
—
What shifts you negatively most often?
—
—
Good.
It’s a good exercise just to pose the question and notice what arises.
The reason I'm going into detail about all this is that the more you can recognize those very specific negative thoughts that occur — your worst triggers — the better off you’ll be.
Consistently noticing the first thought that shifts you out of connection with the present moment is an incredibly powerful practice.
When you notice the trigger, rather than being shifted negatively you can instead be triggered to think to yourself, “Oh yeah, I have to deal with that. That's negative. That could spiral me. That’s going to separate me from living in presence.”
Noticing triggers in real time is part of the nuance I referred to at the beginning of today’s Shift.
When you can notice that nuance in real time, you can shift away from it.
It might well be that you have something that you need to deal with and you can notice that as you notice the trigger.
But if you recognize the trigger consciously, instead of experiencing an immediate negative shift, you're reminded to make an intentional positive shift.
Then you can deal with whatever you need to deal with from a feeling of presence.
You don't need to go on an unpleasant emotional ride first.
Notice the trigger event, make a note to yourself if you need to do something, and then reinforce your intention to remain fully connected to life at this moment.
When you consistently address your life challenges that way, the way you end up addressing issues is much less likely to encourage the issue to repeat in the future with the same intensity.
That's the power of living (and coping) from presence throughout your life.
Let's take a long deep breath.
—
Come into the present moment.
—
Feel the inner change — notice it again.
—
Notice how your body changes after listening to ideas for a while and then shifting by listening to life for a little while.
—
—
—
Do you notice the difference?
For most of us, it's a lot easier to notice when other people get triggered.
You might say to yourself, “Oh, that person is having a hard time today because they always lose their connection with their peace when x, y, or z happens”.
You intuit that life is beating them down and they've succumbed to a negative shift based on some trigger that arose inside them.
The closer you are to the person the better you may recognize their patterns — and the more obvious their triggers may be to you.
However, real personal growth and development comes when you notice those things about yourself AND THEN you shift in real time.
Shifts are super valuable to complete because they improve your ability to notice your worst triggers.
In future Shifts, you’ll strategically provoke your most persistent triggers and then practice dealing with them (i.e., shifting) in real time.
For today, let's take 30 more seconds quietly in presence.
Listen for 30 seconds and then we'll intend presence for the rest of today.
Ready?
Listen.
—
—
Listen to and hear all those sounds that you wouldn't otherwise notice if you didn’t set that intention.
—
Purrrfect.
All right, have an incredible day being fully present.
Set that intention now — an intention to shift whenever you need to for the rest of your day.
Notice when your presence is threatened by anything that could produce a negative shift.
You do that just by noticing your triggers in real time to bring them into conscious awareness.
If you happen to miss noticing your trigger, shift back into presence anytime you notice you’ve disconnected from presence.
Okay?
Did you set your intention to shift whenever you need to for the rest of today?
—
Feel the intention settling inside your body.
—
Nice!
Nice Shift.
Have a present day.

Why don’t we step outside for our final Shift in the Starter Program on this Fourth of July weekend?
—
Can you hear the waves crashing?
For those of us in the United States, July 4th marks our annual rebirth — a celebration of what’s best in us collectively and what unifies us.
We are one.
Just as you are 30 trillion different cells — different pieces of one life, ever-adjusting and perfecting yourself — Americans are 330 million different pieces of one, ever-adjusting to perfect ourselves together.
However we feel at any moment, we each have the ability to shift our 30 trillion cells to produce the state of mind and body that we want to experience next.
Think about that.
By setting a clear intention, you instruct your army of 30 trillion buzzing miracles to organize — these warrior of you — to shift your life in any direction you choose.
Let’s experience that power.
Set the intention to remain aware of both your personal miraculousness and also your interconnection with everyone else.
Sync to that intention by shifting in honor of Independence Day.
Let’s Shift Together.
Close your eyes with me and feel that intention setting inside you.
—
Feel your intention to come into an awareness of both your oneness and our connection to each other.
—
Relax your shoulders.
—
Relax your whole body.
—
Take a deep breath.
—
Fully come into this moment.
—
Bring 100% of your attention here.
—
Being fully present.
—
Feeling your connection to life.
—
—
Listening to life works for bringing yourself into peace because presence is peace, and listening with 100% of your attention is presence.
When you know that, you also know that your baseline experience of life can be peace, anytime you choose it.
That's one of my favorite pieces of knowledge.
Let's come into awareness of ourselves as fully connected to each other now.
We’re going to connect through our shared environment by noticing the air we are breathing.
—
The air that enables the life that you're living.
—
Feel yourself merging into your environment.
—
You’re a buzzing piece of life’s puzzle.
—
We are not separate from life.
We're embedded in life.
—
Let’s listen to the waves.
—
—
—
Immerse into life.
—
—
Now, invite your connection to the people who are closest to you into your inner world feeling.
—
Feel the love you have for them.
—
Feel it?
—
Feel it growing.
—
Nice.
—
Now, take that feeling of love and share it with everyone.
—
Project your love outward, in every direction.
—
Feel yourself sharing your love to all 330 million pieces of one America.
—
Feel the love building, flowing into and through you even more.
—
See yourself as energy building now, so bright.
—
Lighting up.
—
Let's connect together in that light.
Can you see it lighting your inner world?
—
Do you feel the light?
—
It reminds me of the silences between the explosions of fireworks — how it feels, how you release tension into the silence.
Those explosions of color and light drown out all the voices, ushering us into the perfect silence between the noise.
—
They viscerally remind us that we live inside a massive universe of mystery.
See your world as an explosion of light, streaming across the entire world now.
—
You are light streaming through space, merging with other lights.
—
See every light and color blending into one.
—
Beautiful.
—
Breathe into Independence Day.
—
Perfect.
—
Relax.
—
Breathe.
—
Nice.
—
Open your eyes when you’re ready.
Congratulations!!!

Prologue —
In case you’ve missed any Starter Program Shifts…
Starter Shift 1: The Presence Shift
Starter Shift 2: The Mind Garden Shift Into Flow
Starter Shift 3: Shift Your Inner Voice (found below) has an introduction right here.
In today’s Shift, you’ll listen to the silent words flowing through your Mind Garden to shift your inner voice.
I often complete the ‘Shift Your Inner Voice’ sequence before starting a therapy session, a meeting, or recording a new Shift.
Hello friend.
Let’s take a long deep breath and close our eyes.
—
Get comfortable.
—
Relax.
—
Allow your shoulders to fall toward the ground.
Settle in and listen.
Listen to life.
—
Listen to the words flowing in your inner world now — the words flowing as your inner voice.
That’s what we’ll be doing today.
Let’s start with that.
—
Listen to hear the words flowing through you in this moment.
—
Can you quickly identify any words or any ideas emerging out of the silence of your inner world?
—
Do you hear anything floating around in your Mind Garden right now?
—
What words or ideas is your inner world producing when you listen without judgement?
—
What do you notice?
—
Whatever you noticed, let it go.
Let everything go.
Release all words and thoughts.
Let’s come into quiet, into peace, into inner silence.
—
Sit and listen to life with all of your attention.
Empty your inner world of words.
—
Nice.
The following two terms will help us focus this Shift.
Mind Garden refers to your inner world, imagined as a living garden.
Weeds refer to persistent, unwanted aspects of your Mind Garden. They’re usually perpetuated by words and ideas that flow repetitively through your Mind Garden.
We’ll pay close attention to our Mind Gardens and Weeds today.
To Shift Your Inner Voice you’ll navigate through your Mind Garden and notice how authentic the words that are flowing inside you feel.
Your authentic voice is never far away.
One reason that our authentic voices are so powerful is that the journey to finding your voice has inevitably taken many turns.
You navigate through life’s challenges and rediscover personal authenticity along the way.
Your authenticity is reflected in your voice.
Your authenticity is experienced by anyone who hears your voice.
Anyone who listens to you hears, on a primal level, what you’ve traversed on your way to becoming your voice.
Your life is embedded in your voice.
Let’s take another long deep breath.
—
The stamp of your voice carries all of your history and all of your dreams.
All of your living dreams and all of your broken dreams.
They’re all condensed into now, through your voice — through how you express yourself.
When you connect to your voice, everyone who hears you, knows you.
You also come to know yourself by consistently listening to whatever automatically flows through your inner world and into your Mind Garden as your voice.
Knowing your authentic voice is key to being able to shift your mind on demand.
And that’s our Shift Starter Program intention.
Now, let’s make an intentional visit to your Mind Garden and listen with even greater focus.
Imagine yourself sitting at the center of your Mind Garden now.
—
Find your patch of grass or your favorite, most comfortable seat, placed at the exact center of your Mind Garden.
Sit down there at the center — settle into your Shifting Seat.
—
Settling into my seat feels like falling into a soft, thick, pillow-cushioned recliner that slowly recedes as I’m immersed into it.
Feel yourself enveloped.
Relax completely into the space of your inner world.
—
—
Can you see yourself sitting at peace in your Mind Garden?
—
See and feel the colors, the textures, and the movements of your Mind Garden.
—
Flowers opening and blooming.
—
Your Mind Garden is alive.
You can almost smell it.
Your beautiful, peaceful, blooming inner garden.
—
Feel yourself settling in even further.
—
Nice.
Keeping your eyes closed, listen to the words flowing through your Mind Garden now.
—
Let’s listen closely for words or thoughts flowing through our minds.
—
Good.
—
Listen and feel the impact of the words that you hear in your Mind Garden now.
—
Listen without judgement.
—
Closely feel your inner world’s subtle reactions to whatever is arising — whatever you notice or hear.
—
If you listen closely, you’ll notice that there's a feeling associated with the ideas and the words that you hear flowing through your garden.
What does it feel like?
—
Perfect.
Good start.
Okay, let's take another step deeper into our Mind Gardens now.
At the center of your mind garden — right where you're sitting now — there's a hidden opening that leads you even more deeply into the silence that surrounds you.
You’re sitting at the hidden entrance right now.
As you deepen your connection to inner silence, you’ll begin to feel your hidden entrance opening slowly beneath you.
Listen to your inner world with all of your attention.
—
Feel yourself sinking now as the hidden opening carries your Shifting Seat downward, with you in tow.
—
Shift slowly down, through the bottom of your Mind Garden.
—
Keep drifting down until you find yourself floating weightlessly below your Mind Garden, and into the pristine space of silence.
—
I’m down here now, enveloped in silence.
Breathe in the cleanest oxygen.
—
Feel the soft air tickling your skin, buzzing your body and recharging you.
Feel it?
—
We're fully at peace.
Nothing to fear.
No worries.
Let's stay here in the silence and listen together for a little while.
—
Take another long deep breath.
—
Feel yourself sinking even more deeply into the silence, into life.
—
Feel the buzz of silence through your entire body.
—
Blend into the silent world below your Mind Garden.
—
This is the world where your silent words are flowing from — into and through your Mind Garden and into your life.
—
With your next breath out, feel yourself centered, completely at peace and floating in silence below your Mind Garden — merged with silence.
—
Find perfect inner silence.
—
Good.
With your eyes still closed, look a few feet out in front of you now.
Keep breathing deeply as you look through your closed eyes.
—
Open your inside vision — though your eyes remain closed, look out in front of you a few feet, as though you're looking through your forehead, rather than through your eyes.
Doing this will help relax your gaze and keep you connected with the silence.
—
You’re just looking and listening to life right now.
—
You may see a sea of lights in your inner world.
Of course, you’ll usually see darkness too.
You're deep in your inner world now, below your Mind Garden.
Whatever you see, whatever you hear, whatever you feel when you’re down here in silence is your inner world speaking.
Listening closely from down here shifts your inner voice.
—
From down here, you can see your Mind Garden.
If you shift your gaze upward, you'll see the bottom of your Mind Garden.
—
You’ll see its soil bed.
You’ll see the bottom tips of your longest roots, leading up to the flowers, the weeds, and the rest of your Mind Garden above.
Just look.
—
Good.
See if you can feel the energy that's flowing from your Mind Garden now.
The energy state of your Mind Garden is always projecting outward, in every direction.
Feel yourself melting further into presence as you look up at the bottom of your Mind Garden.
Just feel.
—
Remember, ‘weeds’ are persistent, unwanted aspects of your Mind Garden.
They're often perpetuated by the words and ideas that sustain and repeat in your Mind Garden.
Listen and feel for any roots of weeds catching your attention right now.
—
Listen for any unwelcome words that you've been repeating lately.
—
Listen for any ideas or words rooted to a Mind Garden weed.
—
I call this process ‘weeding’.
Keep relaxing your entire body and listening for your inner voice.
—
Settle in further.
—
Whatever regularly distracts you in your life is connected to a weed.
Notice the distraction that comes to mind next.
—
There's a feeling associated with the ideas and the words that you hear.
This feeling comes from whether you feel authentic about what you’re hearing.
What do you hear?
—
What do you feel?
—
If no weeds have popped up, bring to mind any issue you've been grappling with.
—
Whatever weed you notice, set an intention to spend a few seconds focused on connecting with its roots.
—
If you can, imagine seeing a root coming from that weed through the bottom of your Mind Garden.
—
Whatever you notice, feel any automatic reaction to the experience.
—
Don't respond to it.
Just observe it.
—
—
—
Good.
You've heard — and perhaps seen — a root.
Let the genius of your mind address it from here.
You’ll return to listen again later.
That’s great shifting for now.
Listening from silence cultivates your inner voice.
That’s how you shift your inner voice into authenticity.
That’s all it takes.
You shifted your inner voice by simply listening and watching closely.
We’ll make many more visits to observe our Mind Gardens and shift.
Open your eyes whenever you’re ready.
—
To finish up, set an intention to be fully present for the rest of your day or night.
—
Feel that intention.
—
Nice job!
Stay present.
I’ll talk to you soon.
Sean

Recap & Prep —
Starter Shift 3: Shift Your Inner Voice
You now have strategies for shifting into peace, presence, flow, and for shifting your inner voice anytime.
And, you’ve seen that shifting isn’t hard.
It just takes a few minutes of listening to life.
Anytime you notice that peace is missing as you listen, reset your intention to come back into presence with a Present Shift.
If you notice that the conversation occurring in your head has been overtaken by any distractions — fears, shames, regrets, stresses (i.e., weeds) — take a few minutes to garden your mind.
As you continue shifting your mind, you’ll notice you're spending more of your time in peace.
If you’re like me, you’ll discover that shifting is a self-reinforcing practice. It’s contagious in your life — and it will become contagious for those around you too.
You’ll begin to hear specific inner conversational patterns repeating themselves throughout your days.
The more you take note of the inner conversation cycles that bring you into anxiety, stress, sadness, or any other weed-driven state, the more they’ll begin to reduce — just your noticing them will shift your inner voice.
Keep shifting and peacefulness, presence, and flow will take deeper hold in your days.
Congratulations! You’ve completed Starter Program Shift 3 of 4.
You’ve almost completed the Shift Starter Program.
Starter Shift 4 is right here.

Prologue
In case you missed it, the Shift Starter Program Program begins here.
Starter Shift 2 (found below) has an introduction right here.
In today’s Shift, you’ll assess the current state of your Mind Garden before shifting into a focused state of mind called ‘flow.’
Mind Garden is your inner world, imagined as a living garden.
Flow is a state that people report when they are fully involved in an activity to the point of forgetting time and their surroundings except the activity itself.
Flow can correspond to a state of presence, but it also entails a sense of being focused and absorbed in your current activity — often for optimal performance.
I often Shift Into Flow to channel energy wherever I want to focus next during the day.
Hello, friend.
Let’s take an extra-long deep breath together and prepare to explore our Mind Gardens — in our inner worlds — and then shift into a ‘flow’ state.
Because this is a Starter Shift, we’ll move through each step slowly, in detail.
In future Shifts, you can shift into flow more quickly if you choose.
—
Let’s first assess your current ‘flow’ state by answering the following three questions.
Your answers should be provided on a scale from 1-10 where 1 is the worst score and 10 is the best.
Let’s do this together.
I suggest that you close your eyes and listen as I ask you the three questions.
Closing your eyes can enable access to brain power that would otherwise be used for processing sight.
It can help you more precisely sense how you feel at any moment.
So let’s close our eyes and listen to our inner worlds.
—
Take another long deep breath.
—
Focus 100% of your attention into the present moment.
—
Good.
Ready for question #1?
If feeling mentally scattered is a 1 and feeling completely clear-headed is a 10, how do you feel right now?
—
Your answer doesn’t need to be exact.
We’re just generally assessing the current state of your Mind Garden right now.
—
Got your answer?
Good.
Let’s keep going.
Question 2 —
On a scale of 1-10, how at peace versus stressed do you feel right now?
—
Take your time.
—
Got your answer?
OK.
One more question.
Question 3 —
On a scale of 1-10, how engaged versus disconnected do you feel right now?
—
Got it?
Okay, if you add up the three numbers from your three answers, what’s the total?
It should be somewhere between 3 and 30.
—
Got it?
Good.
Keep track of that number until you’re done shifting today.
Great start by the way!
Next, let’s shift into deep peace to prepare your shift into flow.
Notice how much your state changes as you shift into peace over the next two minutes.
—
Keep breathing deeply.
—
Get yourself as comfortable as you can.
—
Settle in.
Get even more comfortable.
—
Feel gravity settling your into your space.
—
Feel your weight against whatever you’re sitting on.
Relax.
—
Notice presence starting to emerge from your mind noise.
—
I’ll guide you through the 3 steps of a Presence Shift now — to prepare you to shift into a flow state by first shifting into peace and presence.
A Presence Shift is a great way to start any Shift.
In The Presence Shift Step 1, we set our intention to shift into a peaceful state of mind over the coming minutes.
So embody your intention to shift into an even more peaceful state.
—
Truly feel your intention inside you.
—
Good.
Step 2 — We listen to life and relax our bodies more.
Listen to life flowing out of silence with 100% of your attention.
—
Hear all those sounds you otherwise wouldn’t hear.
—
Listen.
—
Feel the sounds of life.
—
Feel silence flowing through the world and into you.
—
Feel life.
—
What do you hear and feel?
—
—
I hear gratitude welling up inside.
Gratitude bubbling up from reconnecting to the knowledge that I can find peace anytime I choose — and so can you.
—
Take another deep breath.
—
Nice.
Since we set our intention to drop into a flow state today, let’s keep going.
Step 3 of The Presence Shift is checking in on how present you feel right now.
Shift your attention from only listening to life, to also noticing what you hear and feel occurring inside you — in your inner world.
Notice how you feel as you listen to your body.
—
Allow any thoughts to slow down.
Release them.
Feel for the peace bubbling within you.
—
Sink into your peacefully relaxed body.
—
Feel the peace inside you.
—
Feel it?
—
Perfect.
All of us seek peace, and all of us can find it.
It’s what we just did.
We're sitting in a place of peace together, right now.
Now that we’ve shifted into peace with The Presence Shift, let’s keep going.
Remember that the living world inside your brain and body that you just shifted into peace is your Mind Garden.
So with your eyes closed, visualize your Mind Garden by seeing your inner world as a flowing garden.
—
You might envision a brand new garden that you’ve never seen before.
Or maybe you’ll see a beautiful garden that you’re familiar with.
—
If you’re not a visual person, just focus on feeling your Mind Garden.
This Shift Into Flow will still work for you.
—
See and feel the colors and textures and movements of your Mind Garden.
—
See a soft wind blowing.
Flowers opening and flowing.
—
Your garden is alive.
It’s spectacular.
You can almost smell it — your perfectly peaceful Mind Garden.
—
Let go of any remaining distractions.
—
Only peace is flowing through your Mind Garden right now.
Complete harmony.
Do you see it?
—
Do you feel it?
—
Perfect.
You’ve assessed your current state of flow, shifted into peace and observed your Mind Garden.
Once you’re at peace in your Mind Garden, you can shift your state wherever you choose.
So with your eyes still closed, let’s shift into flow.
—
Imagine yourself sitting in the very middle of your Mind Garden now.
Find a patch of grass, or place to place your favorite comfortable seat, at the exact center of your garden and settle into it.
Sit down there on the grass, or on your seat.
This seat at the center of your Mind Garden is your Shifting Seat.
—
Relax completely into the space of your inner world.
—
Can you see yourself sitting at peace in your Mind Garden?
—
Nice.
Say these words with me silently as you see yourself sitting in your Mind Garden—
Over the next few minutes, I’m going to shift from a peaceful state of mind into a peacefully focused state of mind.
—
Feel the intention to focus your mind settling inside of you.
—
Say it one more time…
Over the next few minutes, I’m going to shift from a peaceful state of mind into a peacefully focused state of mind.
—
Feel it.
—
Truly feel for that intention setting in your body.
—
Know that you are intending to shift your state into flow.
—
Know that it’s beginning to happen.
—
(Closed your eyes now if they’re open.)
Nice.
Now that we’ve set the intention to shift into flow, let’s see ourselves in flow inside our Mind Gardens.
Remember, a flow state can correspond to a state of presence, but entails a sense of being mentally focused too.
—
So stay relaxed, seated in your peaceful Mind Garden.
Intending to shift into flow.
—
What do you want (or need) to be engaged with for the next hour of your life?
It doesn’t matter if you’re working, or with your family, or getting ready for bed.
The question is, how do you want to spend the next hour of your life?
—
What will you dive into next today?
—
Got it?
—
What does being in flow with that experience look like?
Are you standing, or sitting, or lying down?
See it occurring inside your Mind Garden.
—
Picture yourself inside your Mind Garden fully absorbed in the next experience you want to engage with today.
Maybe you’re sitting alone.
Maybe you’re talking to someone.
Maybe you’re writing, or reading, or working out.
Whatever it is, see it in happening now in your Mind Garden.
—
Spend 10 more seconds observing yourself at the center of your Mind Garden, now fully engaging with that task you choose to be at flow with for the next hour.
—
Good.
Let’s amplify your immersion in flow by connecting to why coming into flow is so important to you right now.
—
Why do you want to be in flow today?
—
Do you want to feel and share your best?
Do you want to live your purpose?
Do you want to feel connected to your purpose?
(Maybe you just want to feel your best.)
—
Imagine being in flow with your vision, completely connected to your purpose for the next hour now.
—
Be fully present with this moment — with your intention to shift into flow.
—
Keep seeing yourself being fully involved in the flow of your chosen activity.
—
See yourself so immersed in the flow that you lose track of time and forget your surroundings.
—
You’re focused on nothing but the activity itself.
—
Feel flow happening inside you.
—
Can you notice how your Mind Garden is changing as you shift into flow?
—
See your entire Mind Garden in a state of flow now.
—
Perfect.
Strategically connecting to your intention, vision and motivation for being in flow cultivates your flow state.
Great job!
Your Mind Gardening has been shifting you into flow.
Let’s assess your flow state once more.
Rate the three flow state questions on a scale of 1-10. I’ll read each question in order again.
Close your eyes and answer each question with a number.
* On a scale of 1-10, how scattered or clear are you?
—
* On a scale of 1-10, how at peace or stressed are you?
—
* On a scale of 1-10, how engaged or disconnected are you?
—
What’s your total Mind Garden flow score?
—
If your total went up, congratulations! Great work!
Your total can go up, but it also may stay the same, or even go down. When that happens, just complete the Shift again, or start another Shift from the beginning.
Being persistent is how you’ll improve your ability to shift your mind, and is especially important in the early days of your Shift Starter Program.
You can do this.
Great Mind Garden Shift Into Flow today!
Return to your intention to remain present and focused now — to flow for the rest of your day.
—
Do you feel it?
Are you ready to begin the next hour of your life in flow?
—
Have a great one.
I’ll talk to you soon.

Shift Recap
Nice Mind Garden Shift Into Flow today!
If your Mind Garden total went up, you shifted toward a flow state as intended.
Flow is a state that people report when they are fully involved in an activity to the point of forgetting time and their surroundings except the activity itself.
Flow can correspond to a state of presence, but it also entails a sense of being focused and absorbed in your current activity — often for optimal performance.

Prologue to The Presence Shift
In case you missed it, your Shift Starter Program introduction is here.
In your first of four Starter Shifts (found below), we’ll work together to shift into peace with The Presence Shift.
You can use The Presence Shift technique to shift into a peaceful state of mind anytime.
I often use the technique to start my day in peace, and to fall back asleep anytime I wake up in the middle of the night.
In the Shift that follows, we’ll use The Presence Shift to shift out of stress after waking up from a nightmare in the middle of the night.
Subscribe now to get new Shifts delivered to your email inbox every week.
It’s 3 AM here.
I’m in bed.
Shaking still.
Stress is coursing through me.
I just woke up from a recurring nightmare.
I’m not thinking clearly yet.
But I know from experience that I need to make a shift right now.
Whenever I wake up from a nightmare like this, I usually feel like a failure.
I feel lazy.
I’m feeling like a bad person.
I’m sure you’ve been here before — or somewhere in the emotional neighborhood.
We all get stressed.
We all ruminate.
But here’s what’s important.
Just as we all have those stressful moments, we can all learn to use them to shift our minds and bodies back to peace, whether in service of our purpose or to melt stress and get back to sleep.
Let’s do that now, together.
The first step of The Presence Shift is always to take long, deep breaths as you set your clear intention to shift into a better state of mind over the coming few minutes.
—
So breathe deeply with me.
—
Take your time.
You’re going to a good place.
So there’s no rush.
—
But setting a clear intention is vital.
It’s also vital to make sure you actually feel the intention being set inside your body.
So don’t just think about the intention.
Feel the effect of the intention inside your body as we speak our intention together.
Feel your body shift as you repeat the following with me:
“I’m going to shift into a peaceful, present state of mind over the next few minutes.”
“I’m going to shift into a peaceful, present state of mind over the next few minutes.”
Now, feel that intention lodging in your body.
—
Feel it?
I feel it.
When you feel your intention lodging inside your body, you’ve completed the first of three steps of The Presence Shift.
Your intention to shift into presence is now set, so we move to the second step.
The second step of The Presence Shift is to relax your body as you listen to life with ALL your attention.
With a little practice, you’ll be able to do this in your sleep, (i.e. you’ll be able to shift into presence quickly, any time you choose to).
So relax your body as you listen to life with all your attention.
Let’s allow our bodies to relax completely for a few seconds.
Allow your shoulders to relax and fall toward the ground.
I’m feeling my body pressing against the bed.
Feeling gravity.
Settle into your space too, wherever you are.
Let gravity settle you in.
—
Nice.
—
Feel your entire body relaxing further.
Breathing deeply.
—
Good.
Now that you’re relaxed a little bit, can you feel your whole body buzzing with life?
I love the feeling of the body buzz.
When you can pick up that body buzz, you know you’re on your way to presence.
Notice your body buzz as much as you can.
—
Tingling buzzing of your body.
Tingling and buzzing with life.
Don’t worry if you don’t feel any buzz.
You don’t need to feel the buzz to complete a presence shift, but the body buzz feels great, so if it’s easy for you to notice it and feel it, why not feel it?
We’ll spend more time specifically connecting to your body buzz in other Shifts.
With practice, connecting to your body buzz will become second nature.
OK, for now — now that we’re a bit more relaxed — let’s finish Step 2 by listening to life with 100% of our attention, just for a few seconds.
You can close your eyes or keep them open anytime while you’re shifting, by the way.
Just do whatever works best for you in this moment.
I’m closing my eyes.
Keep breathing deeply throughout The Presence Shift.
And now listen to life with 100% of your attention.
—
What do you hear?
—
—
I hear my heart beating.
I hear far-away waves crashing.
—
Listen with all your attention.
—
—
Feel silence pulling you into presence.
—
When any of your attention gets distracted, as it will at times — maybe 10% or 20% of your attention might pull you into thinking about something else, even as you intend to just listen solely to life.
When that happens, remind yourself of your intention to listen to life with 100% of your attention in order to continue your presence shift.
Let all the thoughts go for now.
And re-assert your intention to listen with 100% of your attention.
—
Keep listening.
(Listen to life.)
—
Perfect.
Do you feel any change in how your body feels right now?
Do you feel any different from how you felt before?
—
Notice anything and everything.
—
Notice any subtle changes in how you feel.
—
And keep feeling.
Let’s do that until our physiology feels chill.
—
By the way, listening to yourself like we just did — to notice how you feel — is Step 3 of The Presence Shift.
You listen to life with all your attention, and you connect with life to drop into presence in Step 2.
And then in Step 3, you notice the changes that occur and are occurring inside you — by intentionally changing where you are placing your attention.
That’s how you feel whether you’re on the right track with your presence shift.
Whenever you start to feel at peace, you know The Presence Shift is working.
—
So, how do you feel?
Make a mental note.
(Has your state of mind or body shifted?)
Noticing your inner experience while you listen improves your shifting abilities.
So be sure to listen and notice.
—
You don’t need to do anything more than that to make a presence shift.
With practice, all three steps of The Presence Shift can happen in just a few seconds.
Eventually, you’ll make The Presence Shift on demand.
Hopefully, you experienced the power of ‘listening’ with all your attention as we progressed — I know I did.
Listening is our most important shifting strategy.
If you’re ever so stressed that you can only remember one thing, that’s fine — don’t panic — as long as the one thing that you remember is to listen to life with all your attention.
As long as you have that, you’ll be fine.
Listening with 100% of your attention brings you into presence. Listening can immediately unlock peace for you, anytime.
So let’s listen to life together with all our attention for another 10 seconds.
Let the presence seep in.
Deepen your connection to presence.
Notice how your inner world subtly shifts as you listen to life with all your attention now.
—
Listen and feel.
—
Feel peace coming into every cell of your body.
—
Nice.
Great.
How are you feeling?
I’m feeling so much more at peace now than I did when we started a few minutes ago.
I feel completely present and at peace now.
The nightmare, and fear, and rumination are all a distant memory.
I’m ready to fade back to sleep.
I hope you’ve shifted toward peace too.
Let’s keep diving into presence and around our inner worlds together in upcoming Shifts.
I’ll show you how to deeply feel that body buzz, and we’ll tend to our inner gardens together.
I love and value Shifting, and I’m so glad you’re here doing this with me.
I’m so glad that I’m now laying at peace with a smile on my face from the idea of you reading this, listening to this — completing this Shift.
I also know we’re off to OnePerfect start with this Starter Program.
Let’s set an intention to stay present throughout the rest of your day, or your night — whatever the case may be for you.
Again, feel that intention lodging in your body.
Can you feel it?
Nice.
Nice work today.
I’m going to shift back to sleep now.
Talk to you soon.
Sean
P.S. Great Shifting! The three steps of The Presence Shift are summarized below for easy access.
Shift Recap
Great Presence Shift today!
Let’s review the highlights so you’re crystal clear about what we’re doing in the Starter Program and why we started with The Presence Shift.
* Your Starter Program intention is to learn to strategically shift your state of mind whenever you choose to.
* Shifting into presence is the first step to shifting your mind strategically.
* We shifted together out of my nightmare because the best way to build confidence in your ability to shift your mind on demand when you need to is to successfully practice shifting your mind when you’re experiencing emotional pain, or some other mental challenge or difficulty.
The 3 steps of The Presence Shift
Step 1 — Take deep breaths and set your intention to shift into peaceful state.
Step 2 — Relax your body and listen to life as you feel your body buzz.
Step 3 — Notice what you hear and feel shifting inside of you.
*Rinse and repeat until you’re feeling at peace in presence.
