Shoujo Sundae

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and PJ and Skylar of the Kawaii Desuppointment podcast review episodes twenty-nine through thirty-one of Fruits Basket (2019)! Rin and Haru’s breakup causes a stir not only within the Sohma family, but at school. Yuki’s sour welcome at the Sohma Estate sparks a conversation about toxic family relationships. In episode thirty, Momiji takes Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, and Hatsuharu to a haunted house. When Tohru fails to get over her fear, Hatsuharu takes a more creative approach to help her view the animatronics differently. Meanwhile, Arisa Uotani has an encounter with Kureno Sohma, which leads to a hot fudge-covered romance. In episode thirty-one, we learn that Kyo is really into bugs! And also that he can pick up on how Tohru is truly feeling. Also, Tohru turns to self soothing after a thoughtless comment from Hiro.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika return to Fruits Basket (2019) and begin season two! In episode twenty-six, Yuki joins his fellow student council members: Manabe and Machi, and he certainly doesn’t know what to make of them. Motoko’s embarrassing outburst in the student council room is difficult to see unfold. In episode twenty-seven, Kazuma shows just how exemplary of a father he was, and still is, to Kyo. Kyo and Tohru share a deeply emotional conversation over late night somen regarding their futures. Chika and Giana are unquenchably intrigued, wondering what Shigure’s writing is like. Shigure’s laundry analogy perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being overwhelmed. In episode twenty-eight, Yuki steps out of his comfort zone yet again to try and better understand his flamboyant brother Ayame by visiting his clothing shop. We get a glimpse into Yuki’s difficult relationship with his family, including Ayame growing up. Despite their differences, the brothers strive to meet in the middle so that they can begin to mend their bond. This is possibly the most vulnerable episode we’ve released on the main podcast. Fruits Basket introspection strikes again!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review the Kimi Ni Todoke live action movie. This film beautifully captured the essence of the anime. Shy, awkward, and mistakenly cursed Sawako Kuronuma develops a crush on popular, refreshing, and handsome Shota Kazehaya. This fluffy shoujo film follows their journey together from the start of school to the new year where rumors test friendships, rivalries form, and feelings are explored and expressed.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four through six of A Sign of Affection! In episode four, Yuki, Itsuomi, Rin, and Kyoya go on an adorable, mundane double date. It’s a wonder Kyoya hasn’t picked up on Rin’s very obvious feelings. Itsuomi asserts his place by Yuki’s side when he stands up to Oushi on the street. In episode five, Itsuomi’s string of suave moves take the ladies’ breath away. Kyoya’s emotional distance from Rin sends up a red flag. Rin, as the world’s best wingwoman, sets Yuki and Itsuomi up to continue an important conversation that had been interrupted. Unfortunately, we learn that Yuki’s family has never taken the time to learn sign language, whereas Itsuomi is making a point to learn it for her. In episode six, Itsuomi’s beautiful confession to Yuki in the snow is a shoujo moment for the history books. He also makes sure to clear up any confusion regarding his relationship with Emma. Throughout this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana share a lot of memories, thoughts, and feelings about life, relationships, and some unhinged thoughts!

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Magical Girl Ayu of the Sparkleside Chats podcast review episodes one through three of A Sign of Affection! This series was voted on by the Shoujo Sundae patrons to celebrate the second anniversary of the podcast. To learn more about how to support Shoujo Sundae, visit patreon.com/shoujosundae.

In episode one, we enter Yuki’s world, our pink-haired deaf protagonist. The poetic, romantic nature of this beautifully animated series is captivating to say the least. We also meet Itsuomi, a boy passionate about language and culture, and Rin, Yuki’s extraordinary wingwoman of a friend who’s crushing on Itsuomi’s cousin, Kyoya. Yuki’s and Itsuomi’s instant chemistry jumpstarts all three ladies’ hearts. Ayu opens up about the shoujo sparkles in her own relationship. In episode two, Itsuomi makes a point to stay in contact with Yuki while traveling, and it goes to show how much he truly likes her. Rin continues to be the wingwoman of the century. Oushi is frustrating in the way he signs so harshly to Yuki, for infantilizing her, and for translating for her without her asking, among other things. In episode three, Yuki makes a sign language guide for Itsuomi! Talk about dedication! Yuki tells Itsuomi that she’s comfortable with his touch, melting everyone’s hearts. Shin and Emma are introduced, and Yuki asks Itsuomi for clarity on whether or not he’s dating Emma. Itsuomi sets strong boundaries with Emma.
