Film History

Six short stories by Mary Hallock Foote (1847–1938), an American author and illustrator. She is best known for her illustrated short stories and novels portraying life in the mining communities of the turn-of-the-century American West. She is famous for her stories of place, in which she portrayed the rough, picturesque life she experienced and observed in the old West, especially that in the early mining towns. She wrote several novels, and illustrated stories and novels by other authors for various publishers. She died at age 90. Her legacy in American history is as a stalwart of the American Old West and a teller of its stories. Her work—the numerous stories for books and periodicals, with her drawings and woodcut illustrations; the correspondence from western outposts; her novels and nonfiction—gained her notice as a skilled observer of the frontier and an accomplished writer. (Summary by Wikipedia and David Wales)

In Exile and Other Stories by Mary Hallock Foote (1847 - 1938)

This was the last story published by Twain, a few months before he died. The story follows Captain Elias Stormfield on his extremely long cosmic journey to heaven. It deals with the obsession of souls with the "celebrities" of heaven, like Adam and Moses, who according to Twain become as distant to most people in heaven as living celebrities are on Earth. Twain uses this story to show his view that the common conception of heaven is ludicrous and points out the incongruities of such beliefs. A lot of the description of Heaven is given by the character Sandy McWilliams, a cranberry farmer who is very experienced in the ways of heaven. The heaven described by him is similar to the conventional Christian heaven, but includes a larger version of all the locations on Earth, as well as of everywhere in the universe. Once in heaven, the person spends eternity living as he thinks best, usually according to his true (sometimes undiscovered) talent. According to one of the characters, a cobbler who "has the soul of a poet in him won't have to make shoes here", implying that he would instead turn to poetry and achieve perfection in it. As Stormfield proceeds through heaven, he learns that his pre-conceptions of "heaven" are all wrong and a good part of the fun of the tale comes from Twain's revealing the "true facts" about what heaven is and how it works. (Introduction by Wikipedia and John Greenman)

The Borghese Gallery presents Beyond the Marble, a podcast illuminating the hidden treasures within the museum’s remarkable archaeological collection. Whether strolling through the grand halls of the Galleria Borghese or glimpsing images in books and travel photos, have you noticed the exquisite ancient artifacts displayed on the museum's ground floor? Alongside Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s extraordinary sculptures, these treasures tell their own fascinating stories. Yet, they are often overlooked by the audience, who tend to focus on the grand masterpieces of modern sculpture displayed at the center of each room. Beyond the Marble invites listeners on a captivating journey into the Ancient world, revealing timeless tales from a vibrant past that continue to resonate today. Originally created to make the archaeological collections accessible to visitors with visual impairments, the project evolved to include international visitors as well, giving them the chance to explore these collections beforehand and engage with the museum's archaeology in a richer, more immersive way. This initiative ensures that everyone can experience the wonders of the Borghese archaeological collection. To evoke vivid mental imagery, the artwork descriptions have been carefully developed in collaboration with Prof. Lucilla D'Antilio, a blind sculptor and professor. The experience extends beyond the podcast itself, with tactile paths introduced within the museum, designed for both people with visual disabilities and sighted visitors. These tours are enhanced by sculptor-made replicas, offering everyone the opportunity to engage with the artworks through touch. We welcome listeners to share their impressions and engage in dialogue with the creators: Dr. Stefania Vannini, art historian and curator at the Ministry of Culture and Accessibility Coordinator at the Galleria Borghese, and Rasul Mojaverian, archaeologist. For feedback and inquiries, please reach out via email at ga-bor.accessibilita@cultura.gov.it. The narration is provided by actors Claire Palazzo and Marcus Marcelli. The music is by Michael Levy. https://ancientlyre.com/

Beyond the Marble - Season 1

Mission Hills is a community church situated in a beautiful city on a hill, in Mission, BC. We are a group of Christ followers who understand our great need for God in our lives. We believe in the triune God: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, and that this God sent His Son to redeem this world. We believe that God in grace reveals Himself through His Word, and this Word is the ultimate authority in all things in life and in death. While we are not and never will be a church that “has it all together”, we trust that God is leading us, working in us, and shining his light through us in this dark world. We meet together on Sunday mornings and would love to have you join us.
