Six candidats, la plupart des conservateurs, ont été autorisés à concourir à l’élection présidentielle iranienne du 28 juin 2024, destinée à remplacer Ebrahim Raïssi, décédé dans un accident d’hélicoptère en mai dernier (2024). La liste inclut un candidat réformateur et un seul religieux. Contrairement à la plupart des pays, en Iran, le président n’est pas le chef de l’État. C’est le guide suprême, actuellement l’ayatollah Ali Khamenei, âgé de 85 ans et en poste depuis 35 ans. L’élection ne sera pas pour autant une simple formalité et ne manquera pas d’être scrutée de près sur la scène internationale alors que Téhéran est un acteur majeur au Moyen-Orient confronté à l’instabilité régionale sur fond de guerre à Gaza et d’inquiétudes sur le programme nucléaire iranien. Iran : les enjeux de l'élection présidentielle du 28 juin 2024

Regard sur la Mongolie à l’occasion des élections législatives du 28 juin 2024 qui constitueront un moment charnière pour la démocratie du pays. Ces élections sont les premières depuis le récent amendement constitutionnel de 2023 qui a porté le nombre de sièges parlementaires de 78 à 126, dont 48 élus à la représentation proportionnelle. Les autres au scrutin uninominal à un tour. À ce changement, s’ajoute un autre, il concerne les circonscriptions électorales qui ont été remaniées et fusionnées, réduisant le nombre de circonscriptions de 29 à 13. 14 jours, c’est la durée en Mongolie des campagnes électorales. Un défi pour une démocratie assez jeune. Libérée du joug soviétique en 1990, la Mongolie ne cesse depuis de tenter d’affirmer son identité et son indépendance face à ses grands voisins, la Chine et la Russie en exaltant le passé et la figure de Gengis Khan. Un immense pays méconnu, à la densité humaine la plus faible au monde. 3,2 millions d’habitants et extrêmement bien doté en réserves minérales. Cuivre, uranium, terres rares... Prise en étau entre ses deux imposants voisins, la Chine et la Russie, la Mongolie a développé la stratégie du troisième voisin et tissé des liens avec de nombreux pays, ce qui rend l’appréciation de la situation assez complexe d’autant que le pays n’a pas à proprement parler d’importance stratégique. Quelles politiques alimentaires et agricoles pour nourrir 10 milliards de Terriens ?

Regard sur les élections européennes de dimanche dernier (9 juin 2024) au cours desquelles les Européens ont élu 720 députés européens pour les cinq prochaines années. Les grands équilibres politiques sont préservés. Le Parti Populaire européen qui regroupe la famille du centre droit reste en tête, suivi des sociaux-démocrates. La troisième place revient aux libéraux centristes. L’extrême droite progresse, mais pas au point de rebattre les cartes. La poussée à droite a été contenue au niveau européen. Elle ne constitue pas un raz-de-marée. Sauf en France. À l’échelle du continent, la France est l’un des pays où les extrêmes droites réalisent leur meilleur score, après la Hongrie et la Pologne et, comme en 2014 et en 2019, le centre de gravité du futur Parlement européen s’est un peu plus déplacé à droite. Une période d’incertitude s’est ouverte en France avec la dissolution de l’Assemblée Nationale. Incertitude sur le rôle que la France pourra jouer en Europe. Idem en Allemagne avec le score médiocre du chancelier Scholz. Beaucoup de chefs d’État ont été distancés à l’occasion de ces élections à l’exception de Giorgia Meloni en Italie. Qu’est-ce que cela signifie pour la place de l’Europe dans le monde ? Ces élections marquent-elles un recul ou une avancée pour l’Europe ? Élections européennes : le recul de l'idéal européen ?

Une victoire sans éclat pour Narendra Modi….c’est ainsi que l’on peut décrire la situation au terme des élections générales qui se sont déroulées sur plusieurs semaines en Inde et viennent de se terminer. Près d’un milliard d’électeurs étaient appelés aux urnes. Le BJP, le puissant parti du Premier Ministre qui est aussi la plus grande formation politique au monde avec 180 millions de membres, est certes arrivé en tête du scrutin mais pour la première fois depuis dix ans celui qui gouvernait sans partage, n’obtient pas à lui seul, la majorité. Il lui manque 32 sièges pour cela. Il lui en fallait 272. Il n’en a que 240. Usure du pouvoir, campagne sans élan, échec personnel pour Narendra Modi ? Le premier ministre indien n’en remporte pas moins sa 3è victoire. Reste que les questions liées à l’emploi et à l’inflation n’ont pas suffisamment été ses priorités alors qu’elles l’étaient de l’opposition. Le chômage n’a jamais été aussi haut depuis les années 1970 en Inde et le secteur manufacturier est faible. Le pouvoir autoritaire de Modi va-t-il pouvoir continuer à s’exercer ? Today’s episode, picks up where we last left off. It’s 1972, and Martin McNally just hijacked a plane heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma. His plan was simple… Demand a half a million dollars, jump out of the plane, and disappear into the darkness of night.

After 15 seconds of freefall, McNally pulls the ripcord. He begins to spin out of control. The parachute whips out and blasts him in the face. McNally looks up at the canopy as it pulls him away from the Earth. Then he looks down, and he realizes that the money bag strapped to his body detached and fell into the night sky.

What now? He’s beat up, he lost all the money, and by the time he reaches the ground, there will be hundreds of FBI agents searching for him. What’s the point? McNally, considers ending it all.

Martin J. Mcnally (Former Hijacker) Part 2

Martin McNally recounts his 1972 hijacking of an American Airlines flight heading to Tulsa, Oklahoma. His plan was simple—sneak a submachine gun onboard a 727 jet, demand a half-million dollars in cash, and escape with a parachute. And he almost got away with it.

He was inspired by the infamous hijacker D.B. Cooper. But unlike D.B. Cooper, we actually know how McNally’s story ends.

As you can imagine, his plan didn’t go smoothly. The pilot had to return to St. Louis to get the mailbags full of money. After hours of negotiations with the FBI, there was a crew change and an FBI agent, dressed as crew members, snuck on board. Then, as the plane was preparing for take off, a drunk passenger smashed his Cadillac into the nose of the plane.

By now, it should have been over. But McNally persisted and demanded a new plane. Once up in the air, McNally jumped into the darkness and disappeared with the cash.

Officer Palomares’ story begins with his first undercover assignment. In the late 1980s there was this show called 21 Jump Street. Johnny Depp starred in it. It was about undercover cops, who pretended to be students, in order to bust drug dealers in schools.

But did you know that back in the 1994, the Los Angeles police department juvenile narcotics unit actually recruited young officers to infiltrate classrooms in order to investigate drug dealers? They couldn’t just get any cop to fill this undercover role. They needed a fresh face who could blend in with the students. So, they approached officer Ruben Palomares.

In 1995, Ruben Palomares got transferred to LAPD’s Rampart Division where he continued to work undercover cases. He was specifically assigned to the anti-gang unit called CRASH. CRASH is an acronym for the Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums. This is when Ruben’s fate will be decided.

For the first four years, during his time at the Rampart Division, his superiors described him as a leader with a reputation for excellence. But Ruben was committed to cleaning up his neighborhood—and he was willing to use his authority to do so.

That’s when the suspicious shootings started to happen, then the robberies, and before anyone even noticed, he was wrapped up with the same officers suspected of orchestrating the assassination of The Notorious B.I.G.
