Rich Murphy has been the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Redlands for the past 17 years compiling an impressive 264-153 record (as of Jan. 31, 2024) and an even more impressive SCIAC record of 170-70 during his tenure.

His kids play hard, smart and execute about as well as any basketball team can. His team's were always a handful for my La Verne teams from 2010-2013 when we had to coach against each other, and I always remember them being epic battles.

He's one of the smartest basketball coaches you'll find and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. It was a great joy to re-connect with Coach Murphy. He has a fascinating story and background, and I am sure everyone listening will be as inspired as I was. Enjoy!

Pete Sterbick is the Head Football Coach at the Colorado School of Mines, and it was a pleasure watching his team play in the NCAA D2 National Championship game on national TV in mid-December, 2023. I was so impressed I had to call and get him on the podcast. As a local Colorado guy, most people were excited about what Deion Sanders did this year at the University of Colorado, but the best coach in the state, and the one who actually led his team to the National Championship game, is Coach Sterbick.

Coach Sterbick is not only a world class coach and offensive mind, but he is truly a good man and a thoughtful leader of young men. He is another coach who epitomizes what it means to be a significant coach, and the sky is truly the limit for him and his program.

We had a great conversation about recruiting, the NCAA Portal, the present and future of NIL, Coach DeBoer going from NAIA coach to the D1 National Title Game to now the Head Coach of the University of Alabama, and I couldn't waste an opportunity to talk to an offensive guru about Justin Fields and my Chicago Bears! Oliver Wiseman is the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Benedictine University (IL). He is quickly rebuilding the Eagles program into a Midwest and National powerhouse. Before his tenure at Benedictine, he had an invaluable career as a D2 and D3 assistant (including playing for and coaching with me!) at Maryville University of St. Louis where he was instrumental as a lead assistant and recruiting coordinator.

Coach Wiseman was kind enough to write the Coach's Perspective to Chapter 7 of my book for me, and he did a wonderful job of talking about the importance of recruits reaching out to college coaches and inviting coaches to recruit them. Mark Murphy has been the Head Women's Tennis Coach at Kalamazoo College in Michigan for the past 14 years and has led his Hornets to 17 All-MIAA First team selections, 13 All-MIAA Second Team selections, 5 MIAA MVPS while twice being named Regional Coach of the Year. That's impressive!

Not only is Mark one of the best college tennis coaches in the country, he is also a fantastic leader, role model, father and husband. And, he's a fellow Coe College alumnus and a Chicago sports fan, so you can be assured that we talked about the Cubs, Bears and Bulls at the end of the podcast. Samantha Birkicht is the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and she is coming off of back-to-back 20 win seasons in what is arguably the toughest NCAA D3 conference in the country, the WIAC (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference).

Sam, not only is one of the best volleyball coaches in the country, but her and her husband, Ryan, may have the best collegiate Instagram platform in all of college sports (@uwpvolleyball). I encourage you to follow them on Instagram, but check-out their post on Oct. 31, 2023 to get a glimpse of what makes it so special.

Sam also wrote a tremendous piece on social media for me in my book Significant Recruiting: The Playbook for Prospective College Athletes. Her contribution to Chapter 9 on social media is brilliant, and I'm not afraid to say that it may be the best thing written in that chapter.

Dario Frias is the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at UC-Santa Barbara. If there is a better collegiate assistant basketball coach in the country than Dario Frias, I would sign-up in a second to watch them work. Not only is Coach Frias a rising star on the collegiate women's basket circuit, but his coacheshangtime.com went viral during Covid and became THE place for high school and college coaches to share, learn and grow when we couldn't be on the floor with our kids. His episode with UConn's legendary Head Coach, Gino Auriemma is still talked about amongst coaches across the country.

In this week's Significant Coaching, you will be overwhelmed with golden nuggets of coaching knowledge. Coach Frias breaks down his amazing attention to detail and how he goes about scouting, recruiting, player development and more. If you are a President or an AD at a college or university, and this guy is not at the top of your short list for your future Head Coach, you may want to get out your eraser and pencil and add him to the list. Dr. Ryan Dyer is the Director of Athletics and Assistant Principal at North Paulding High School in Dallas, GA and is one of my former players. He took over a high school program that had never experienced any type of winning, and he turned them into a consistent state tournament threat. Dave Kaneshiro is the Head Women's Basketball Coach at the University of Hawaii-Hilo after successful stints at Webster University and Blackburn College. Dave and I have been friends and competitors for over 20 years, and I am happy to say that I sleep better at night knowing that I don't have to prepare my team to face his teams anymore. I truly believe that he is one of the best teachers of motion offense in the country, and I hope he does an instructional video on motion offense at some point because I will be the first coach in line to buy.

One of the very few college coaches in the country who can state that they have been named Conference Coach of the Year at 3 different institutions while leading his team to conference championships at 3 different schools and doing it at the D3 and D2 levels and with both the men and the women. Tyler Saxton is the Head Girls' Basketball Coach at Brookfield East High School in Wisconsin.  He took over the high school basketball program with not much talent and went 6-17 in his first year.  He has since led the program to Back-to-Back State Championship games. Chris Ellis is a 2011-12 Inductee into the Missouri Basketball Coaches' Hall of Fame and a great friend for the past 20+ years.
