Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Joel is a straightforward read in terms of length. But don't let its quick nature lead you to overlook its treasures. Judgment is set for the rebellious people of God, but the prophet speaks the words of the Lord, "Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your garments." There is still the chance that the people of God could find themselves receiving his blessings rather than a curse.

The end of chapter two gives us two beautiful texts mentioned in the New Testament. First, "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see vision." This statement is fulfilled on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. Peter tells us as much in his first address to the crowds. Second, we read, "It shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Paul utilizes this text in Romans to remind the reader of the hope of salvation for all who believe. It is important to see how the New Testament writers use and quote the Old Testament. It gives us insight into how the people of the day understood the OT and frames for us how we should read these texts.

I don't know if I could convince you here in a few lines about the importance of memorizing the last three Kings of Jerusalem/Judah and the length of their reigns. If you can memorize these final three Kings, you will gain tremendous insight into the books of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. Furthermore, it will give you a better understanding of Ezra and Nehemiah. Let me give you a quick breakdown here.

The final three kings of Judah were Jehoiakim, Joehoiachin, and Zedekiah.

          Jehoiakim reigned for ELEVEN YEARS.

          Jehoiachin reigned for THREE MONTHS.

          Zedekiah reigned for ELEVEN YEARS.

King Nebuchadnezzar became King of Babylon in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim. This corresponds to Daniel chapter one. So then Daniel chapter one, Nebuchadnezzar becomes King of Babylon, Jehoiakim has been on the throne for 3 years, Jeremiah has been a prophet for 21 years. All of these take place at the same time.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Manasseh would be the most wicked King to ever rule over the kingdom of Judah, but by contrast, Josiah would be one of the very best. Josiah became King when he was eight years old. Not only did he restore the Passover, he also found the Book of the Law and had it read before the people. Not even in David's days was the Book of the Law read from as it had been during Josiah's reign. He sought the Lord with all his heart and led the people to follow the Lord. Judgment for the wickedness of the previous Kings was still coming upon Jerusalem and Judah, but for the time being, Josiah had led the people in faithfulness.

When I first started doing ministry in 1997, I considered naming my ministry "Josiah Ministries." However, my friends at the time (and still now, in fact) said, "No one knows who Josiah is. You need a better name." Eventually, I did come up with a different name for my preaching ministry, but Josiah has always held a special place in my heart.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Aside from David, Hezekiah and later Josiah are probably the most godly examples of Kings that Jerusalem would ever know. The three chapters we have here concerning Hezekiah are also recorded for us in 2 Chronicles and Isaiah. There are not many Kings who merit three entire chapters in the Scriptures after the first three, Saul, David, and Solomon. Hezekiah was the first, after David, to try to lead the people in the truth and grace of God. He restored the Passover celebration and even sought to have the northern kingdom, Israel, return to the authentic worship of God. He was sadly laughed to scorn.

During Hezekiah's reign, God defeated the Assyrian army, but we will see the reasons for that more clearly in Isaiah. In a single night, God struck down 185,000 men of the Assyrian army, effectively bringing their reign of power to an end.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Chapter seventeen of today's study gives us insight into the future people known as the Samaritans in the New Testament. Remember that Samaria became the capital city of the northern kingdom of Israel. Obviously, the people from Samaria would be known as Samaritans. Still, beyond that, in the first-century world, we see that there is an entire people group known as Samaritans that the Jews despise as a whole. These people were part Jewish and part foreign in their genealogy. Jesus famously spoke to the woman at the well in John 4, and she discussed with him where the appropriate place for worship was found. "Our people say to worship on this mountain, but you people say to worship in Jerusalem." Remember again that the King of Assyria, after taking over Israel, sent foreigners to live there. They didn't know how to honor God, so God sent lions to kill them. Jews were then sent back to the land to teach the foreigners how to worship God. Instead, the people of the land worshipped their idols and added God to the mix. Fast forward five hundred years or so, and you have the Samaritan people who are essentially idolaters. They were mixed people, the offspring of Jews and pagans. But the people of Israel had already abandoned God centuries earlier.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

On days like today, when you are covering so many kings in just a few short chapters, and you find yourself wondering why you read these histories, I want to remind you that all of the books of Kings and Chronicles show us how rebellious the household of God behaved. They had rejected God as King and turned to their own kings. Then, they rejected God as God and turned to idols. These books of the Bible highlight the fruitless pursuit of earthly kings for us. No political system or ruler can bring about righteousness and peace for a people. Only God can do that. We look at these pages and recognize the futility of an earthly kingdom. Instead, we turn our longing toward a heavenly kingdom, our heavenly city whose builder and founder is God.

The people of the New Testament who endeavored to make Jesus king by force had missed the lesson. They were still looking for an earthly man to sit on an earthly throne and rule amidst the nations. They missed the lessons of the kings of Israel and Judah that no earthly king could accomplish what only God intended to do. It is why they could not fathom the heavenly kingdom that Jesus was bringing about, and in a jealous rage, they ultimately put him to death.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

Jehu is significant in that he brings the line of Ahab to an end to fulfill what had been spoken through Elijah, the prophet. Jehu is the third individual God had told Elijah to anoint (Elisha was the first, and Hazael was the second). However, we again see that it was not Elijah but Elisha who anointed Jehu as king.

Jehu was moderately or at least momentarily faithful to God, but his line would be removed from kingship after four generations.

The absolute boss move of Jehu is when he feigned worship to Baal to eradicate all of the Baal worshippers in Israel. Sadly, the people would return to the worship of false gods and idols in just a few decades.

Here’s an excerpt from the blog post.

In the previous episode, we saw that the people of Israel were in dire need of food. Elisha promised that by the next day, there would be plenty of food for those trapped in the city, but the Captain of the King mocked this pronouncement as hopeless. He even mocked God, saying, "If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?"

The Syrian army heard the sound of chariots and horses, that of a great army, and fled, leaving all their supplies behind. This was not the first time God had routed an army by supernatural means, though this army would fare way better than the later Assyrian army.
