For all the beauty of the miracle in which Naaman was healed, we need to be careful not to miss the application Jesus gave to this narrative in Luke. Naaman served as an example of God's rich grace toward the Gentile peoples. Of course, we know that the Gentiles have been included in God's blessing and grace since Genesis 12 when he first called Abraham.

It's time for some miracles performed by Elisha. Let's do a quick summary:
The water that fills the pits to quench thirst and aid in defeating the enemy
The widow's oil that multiplied and didn't run out until she had no more vessels to pour into
Raising a dead boy to life
Purification of a deadly stew (because some idiot didn't pay attention to the wild gourds he gathered and threw poisonous gourds into the stew, putting everyone at risk. You know he never got asked to cook dinner again)
Though these are neat stories, my favorite is the widow's oil. "Borrow vessels from all your neighbors, not too few." How amazing that she could not only pay off her debt but also have enough money left over for her and the boys to live on from that moment forward! That is a lot of jars of oil. I imagine all sorts of jars, bowls, and pots: every size and shape. Someone was buying the smallest jar of oil, and someone else was buying a barrel of oil from her. Seriously, imagine this lady, let's call her Pearl, going to her neighbors. "So, Jan, I was wondering if you had any empty vessels I could borrow. I'm trying to pay off some debt and make a little money on the side." (Wait a minute, was this the first lady working from home? Okay, probably not.) Jan furrows her brow, thinking, "You know, Pearl, my son just made the ugliest ashtray in daycare this week. It isn't much, but you're welcome to it."

This story also has two of the four places where water is parted for someone or a group of people to travel across on dry land. The first was the Red Sea, and the second was when the people crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land. Of course, the significance of it here is to show that Elisha had the same spirit as Elijah and to confirm him as Elijah's successor to the prophets of God. That is the same reasoning for Moses and Joshua. When Joshua led the people across the Jordan on dry land, it was reminiscent of the parting of the Red Sea and confirmed Joshua as the rightful successor to Moses.

As to the narrative of chapter 22, the lying spirit causes discomfort for some people, but we discussed this in some detail when we covered the harmful spirit sent to King Saul by God. I suggest you revisit our notes from Episode 77. We rest comfortably knowing that God does everything well and is trustworthy. If God used a lying spirit to bring about the downfall of an unrighteous king, we can not find fault with God.

Elijah fully trusted in God, and God decidedly revealed himself as the one true God. That day would be the end of those false and idolatrous priests and prophets. Though the crowds would say, "The Lord he is God," they would not hold to that confession and would be in denial of God soon enough.

Also of note in this chapter is that Elijah blessed a Gentile and not a Jew during the time of famine. Jesus would reference this in his first recorded sermon in Luke 4, and through that, would absolutely enrage the Jewish crowds. Jesus points out that this widow, a Gentile woman, was blessed rather than the numerous Jewish widows. He will further point out that under the leadership of Elisha (we will look at this in a couple of days), a Gentile leper was healed rather than the numerous Jewish lepers. Jesus is making the point to his audience that the Jews will reject God's purpose for them and the truth of Jesus as the savior, but that the Gentiles will believe.

Saul was the first king. He was of the tribe of Benjamin and the king the people expected. Saul reigned over all of Israel. David was the second king of the tribe of Judah. He was the king God chose. He was the forerunner of Christ. David also reigned over the entire unified kingdom. Solomon, the son of David, rejected God but reigned over the whole kingdom. In the days of Rehoboam, son of Solomon, the kingdom was divided. As I said yesterday, the northern kingdom would never serve God, but the southern kingdom would go back and forth. The northern kingdom fell about 133 years before the southern kingdom. Israel fell to Assyria and Judah to Babylon. This happened because the people rejected God as king in 1 Samuel 8.

The first act of Jeroboam, king of Israel, was to make two idols for the people to serve. He declared the same thing Aaron did at the base of Mount Sinai: " Behold your gods who brought you up out of Egypt." The new king easily led the people astray, which shouldn't surprise us. The Hebrew people had not been walking with God faithfully since they left Egypt.
Rehoboam and Jeroboam rebelled against God and turned their nations against God. The northern kingdom will never have a king who serves the Lord, but Judah will have kings who seek God about fifty percent of the time.

"Job, you have so much understanding; you must have been there when I laid the foundation of the earth. You must know its measurements. Was it you who shut in the ocean and made a boundary for its waves? Or did you lead forth all the stars? Certainly, you command the dawn. You know the deep places of the sea, right? Do you know where the gates of death are? Speak up since you are so wise. Where is the dwelling place of light and dark? You were born then, and the number of your days is SO GREAT (insert sarcasm here). Do you water the earth? Have you fed the wild beasts? Do the ravens cry out to you for food? Can you take the Leviathan by his nose? Can you destroy the wicked and bring them to nothing? Can you clothe yourself with majesty, glory, and splendor? Answer me."
